  • This paper suggests an algorithm to improve QoS by using DTR bit employed in the MIL-STD-188-220 protocol, when there is a multi-path between source and destination in the environment of KVMF tactical network supporting NCW. The MIL-STD-188-220 protocol can evaluate the link quality relatively but it cannot support optimal path selection for QoS. In order to solve this problem, we design an algorithm for selecting path using topology table which reflects measured DTR of path after the completion of transmission. The performance of the proposed algorithm has been evaluated by OPNET simulator. As a result of the simulation, it is found that QoS of proposed algorithm is enhanced higher than that of the MIL-STD-188-220 in the aggravated communication environment.

  • In tactical wireless local area networks, jamming attack can easily occur by sending out continuous radio signals. The damage will be serious when the channel frequency is identical. Since wireless channel environment is open to everyone, the perfect solution for jamming attack does not exist. However, a channel-hopping scheme is well known for mitigating those jamming attacks. In this paper, I consider various channel-hopping schemes in order to analyze the throughput and fairness performance under smart jammer attack. Also an analytical model is introduced to evaluate the throughput performances of channel-hopping schemes. After analyzing well known channel-hopping schemes, I propose a simple channel-hopping scheme that can enhance fairness significantly at minimal throughput degradation expense.

  • As the trend of future war has been changed to network centric warfare, tactical data link should be needed for fast and accurate situation awareness. Nowadays, Korean air force conducts military operations by using aircrafts equipped with Link-16. The Link-16 can conduct multiple mission at the same time because it supports multi-net capability. Due to lack of frequency resource, the way to share the frequency with other systems has been studied and using L band with radar is considered as one of the candidates bands. However, the data link can be affected by the interference from radars when it shares the L-band because the L-band in Korea is already assigned to long-range detection radars. In this paper, we evaluate operational possibilities of tactical data link in the L-band based on Link-16.

  • This paper presents a novel hybrid authentication scheme in the next-generation Tactical Mobile Communication Systems(TMCS) with wireless MSAP mesh networks. The existing centralized and distributed authentication methods for security between MSAPs may have their pros and cons. The centralized authentication method induces overhead from frequent MSAP association which leads to long authentication delay. On the other hand, the distributed authentication method requires initial sharing of the authentication information. Therefore, a more efficient authentication scheme is needed to protect the network from malicious MSAPs and also maximize efficiency of the network security. The proposed scheme provides a hybrid method of efficiently managing the authentication keys in the wireless MSAP mesh network to reduce the induced authentication message exchange overhead. Also, as the authentication method between MSAP and TMFT is different, a method of utilizing the ACR for handling the EAP packets is proposed. In overall, the proposed scheme provides efficient mutual authentication between MSAPs especially for tactical environments and is analyzed through performance evaluation to prove its superiority.

  • In this paper, we propose a reliable multicast scheme for the tactical wireless ad hoc network where the members share the situation and operation data. Our scheme consists of two phases to guarantee the reliability. During the dissemination phase, we utilizes an epidemic approach similar to gossip-based ad hoc routing. Then the group members interchange the message reception state information periodically so that they are able to recover missing packets from the other members. We evaluate the performance of our scheme through extensive simulations using the network simulator in comparison with other existing reliable multicast schemes in mobile ad hoc network. Our scheme shows higher packet delivery ratio regardless of the mobility and imposes much lower control overhead to the non-group members compared with the existing schemes.

  • To this end, the ROK military is developing a Korean Tactical Data Link (Link-K) in two stages: Basic and Completion types. Currently, the basic type of the Link-K has a limitations for supporting Mission Group(MG)s, such as to share unnecessary information and inefficient routing, because all RICCs simply broadcasts the same information in the basic type of the Link-K. In this paper, we propose a Zone-based Wireless Link-K network structure and a routing algorithm. To improve the effectiveness of the proposed routing algorithm, we have studied a filtering method that adjusts the message data according to the priority of the message and a method of controlling the load of the network. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed scheme, it is proved that it is effective to support the mission task group compared with the existing wireless Link-K routing algorithm according to the operational scenario situation.

  • In this paper, I designed the satellite system, using the MF-TDMA (Multi Frequency-Time Division Multiple Access) DAMA (Demand-Assigned Multiple Access) method, that allocates the satellite resources more effectively to prevent a large quantity data discard when Earth Terminals (ETs) request their satellite network resource to Network Controller (NC) by using their history information, such as traffic pattern or traffic class which have been receiving, and the network controller allocates the satellite network resource and send to earth terminals by using his history information that earth terminals have been requested already. The U.S. Military Warfighter Information Network-Tactical (WIN-T) community has selected the L-3 Linkabit MF-TDMA DAMA Network Centric Waveform (NCW) as the networking standard for full-mesh IP over SHF satellite communications. In the MF-TDMA DAMA satellite network, network controller allocates the satellite network resources and enables maximum 255 earth terminals to communicate each other for periodic satellite network resource requests of earth terminals.

  • In this paper, a practical model for evaluating and comparing the bit error rates(BERs) due to adjacent channel mutual interference in a synchronous and asynchronous frequency hopped spread spectrum multiple access(FH-SSMA) radio communication systems is proposed. After implementing the actual FH radio in both the sychronous and asynchronous case, the BER is computed and measured. An experiment of this system in mobile tactical environments reveals that the performance in the asynchronous case is lower than that of the synchronous case. The computer simulation model is an efficient tool for designing practical FH radios in mobile communication environments.

  • A frequency assignment problem on time division duplex system is considered. Republic of Korea Army (ROKA) has been establishing an infrastructure of tactical communication (SPIDER) system for next generation and it will be a core network structure of system. VHF system is the backbone network of SPIDER, that performs transmission of data such as voice, text and images. So, it is a significant problem finding the frequency assignment with no interference under very restricted resource environment. With a given arbitrary configuration of communications network, we find a feasible solution that guarantees communication without interference between sites and relay stations. We formulate a frequency assignment problem as an Integer Programming model, which has NP-hard complexity. To find the assignment results within a reasonable time, we take a genetic algorithm approach which represents the solution structure with available frequency order, and develop a genetic operation strategies. Computational result shows that the network configuration of SPIDER can be solved efficiently within a very short time.
