Reaching fault tolerance in technological systems requires to detect malfunctions. This paper presents a diagnostic method that is robust with respect to unknown-but-bounded uncertainties of the dynamical model and the measurements. By using models of the faultless and the faulty behaviours, a state-set observer computes polyhedral sets from which the consistency of the models with the interval measurements is determined. The diagnostic result is proven to be complete, i.e., the set of faults obtained by the diagnostic algorithm includes the actual fault. The algorithm is illustrated by an application example.

Nurses have performed their nursing practice according to the standard guidelines such as NANDA, NIC, and NOC, and recorded the information on nursing process into EMR system. In particular, NANDA, nursing diagnosis taxonomy, has difficulty expressing nursing diagnosis in detail because it represents abstract concepts of nursing diagnosis. So, the hospitals in KOREA have developed and used the list of nursing diagnosis on their own without referring the international standard terminologies, and it caused the delay of computerization of nursing records. Therefore, we proposed a ontology development methodology on nursing diagnosis based on NANDA and SNOMED-CT. The developed ontology, systematically developed with the frequently used nursing diagnosis terminologies in each hospital, based on the proposed methodology enables knowledge expansion and interoperable exchange of nursing records between EMR systems. We developed an ontology using the 112 nursing diagnosis terms defined by extracting and refining information on nursing diagnosis recorded in Kyungpook National University Hospital. We also confirmed the content validity and the usefulness of the developed ontology through expert assessment and experiment.

This paper presents hybrid expert system for diagnosis of electric power transformer faults. The expert system diagnose and detect faults in oil-filled power transformers based on dissolved gas analysis. As the preprocessing stage, fuzzy information theory is used to manage the uncertainty in transformer fault diagnosis using dissolved gas analysis. The Kohonen neural network takes the interim results by applying fuzzy informations theory as inputs, and performs the transformer fault diagnosis. The Proposed system tested gas records of power transformers from Korea Electric Power Corporation to verify the diagnosis performance of transformer faults.

This study suggests the hybrid fault diagnosis method of signed digraph (SDG) and partial least squares (PLS). SDG offers a simple and graphical representation for the causal relationships between process variables. The proposed method is based on SDG to utilize the advantage that the model building needs less information than other methods and can be performed automatically. PLS model is built on local cause-effect relationships of each variable in SDG. In addition to the current values of cause variables, the past values of cause and effect variables are inputted to PLS model to represent the Process armies. The measured value and predicted one by dynamic PLS are compared to diagnose the fault. The diagnosis example of CSTR shows the proposed method improves diagnosis resolution and facilitates diagnosis of masked multiple-fault.
The paper presents functional modelling and its application for diagnosis in nuclear power plants. Functional modelling is defined and its relevance for coping with the complexity of diagnosis in large scale systems like nuclear plants is explained. The diagnosis task is analyzed and it is demonstrated that the levels of abstraction in models for diagnosis must reflect plant knowledge about goals and functions which is represented in functional modelling. Multilevel flow modelling (MFM), which is a method for functional modelling, is introduced briefly and illustrated with a cooling system example. The use of MFM for reasoning about causes and consequences is explained in detail and demonstrated using the reasoning tool, the MFMSuite. MFM applications in nuclear power systems are described by two examples: a PWR; and an FBR reactor. The PWR example show how MFM can be used to model and reason about operating modes. The FBR example illustrates how the modelling development effort can be managed by proper strategies including decomposition and reuse.
The gear drive of a combat aircraft engine is responsible for power transmission to the different accessories necessary for the engine's operation. Incorrect power transmission can occur due to the presence of failure modes in the gears like bending fatigue, pitting, adhesive wear, scuffing, abrasive wear and polished wear etc. Fault diagnosis of the gear drive is necessary to get an early indication of failure of the gears. The present research is to develop an algorithm using different vibration signal processing techniques on industrial vibration acquisition systems to establish gear fault diagnosis architecture. The signal processing techniques have been used to extract various feature vectors in the development of the fault diagnosis architecture. An open-source dataset of other gear fault conditions is used to validate the developed architecture. The results is a basis for development of artificial intelligence based expert systems for gear fault diagnosis of a combat aircraft engine.

As many industrial systems become more complex, it becomes extremely difficult to diagnose the cause of failures. This paper presents a failure diagnosis approach based on discrete event system theory. In particular, the approach is a hybrid of event-based and state-based ones leading to a simpler failure diagnoser with supervisory control capability. The design procedure is presented along with a pump-valve system as an example.
Electric propulsion systems, including electrothermal, electrostatic, and electromagnetic thrusters, are promising systems for producing thrust from satellites. These systems generally operate under vacuum plasma conditions and exhibit high specific impulses and thrust-to-weight ratios. Despite their high efficiencies, electric propulsion systems are susceptible to performance variations due to physical factors such as plasma instabilities, which require an accurate diagnosis of their status during operation. In this study, we review various measurement systems adopted to diagnose electric propulsion systems operating under vacuum conditions. Specifically, we review electrical, optical, and other methods that can directly or indirectly measure the status of a thruster, with a particular focus on Hall effect thrusters. The system configurations and fundamental mechanisms of the different measurement systems are described based on case studies of the diagnosis of propulsion systems. We anticipate that this study will contribute to the efficient development and safe operation of electric propulsion systems for use in artificial satellites.

Fault Diagnosis is a process of detecting and isolating faults in a system. On demanding for safety and high reliability systems make it important for some reasons such as economical and environmental incentives. Especially embedded technology and IT technology combined with precise sensing techniques has been doing well developed and applied to fault diagnosis and prognosis in industrial systems like as automotive, ship, heavy industry and aerospace as well. This paper, as an empirical application of diesel engine, presents a method how to get raw data from physical systems, what to consider for successful implementation and which theoretic mathematical models should be applied. In a sense of system level Adaptive Filtering (we call Modified Kalman Filter) and a unit of part level Hidden Markov Process was developed and applied.

Vibration diagnosis of steam turbine generator is essential for safe operation. For a fast few decades, several data base systems for diagnosis of steam turbine generators have been developed and proved useful. However, there still remains a problem in using data base systems such that they require an expert engineer who has a deep insight or knowledg into the system. Moreover, such data base systems can not give any information if the input is not completely fit with data base. This paper presents an effective method for vibration diagnosis of steam turbine generators using fuzzy inference. The proposed method includes also a strategy to overcome the drawback of data base system such that one cannot obtain any information when the input is insufficient or not exact. A computer program is written to realize the entire procedure for the diagnosis. Three realistic problems are dealt with to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.
