Studies on the New Analytical Methods for Separation and Recovery of Rare Earth Metals (I) : Adsorption Characteristics of U(VI) Ion by New Synthetic Resins with Macrocyclic Compounds (희토류금속 분리 및 회수를 위한 분석화학적 연구 (제1보) : 우라늄(VI)의 분리회수를 위한 선택이온교환수지 합성과 우라늄(VI) 금속이온의 흡착특성)

  • Several new ion exchange resins have been synthesized from chloromethyl styrene-1,4-divinylbenzene(DVB) with 1%, 2%, 4%, and 10%-crosslinking and macrocyclic ligands of cryptand type by interpolymerization method. The adsorption characteristics and the pH, time, solvents and concentration dependence of the adsorption of metal ions by this resin were studied. The correlation between the separation characteristics of uranium, rare earths and transition metal on the resins and the stability constants of complexes with macrocyclic ligands have been examined. The resins were very stable in both acidic and basic media and have good resistance to heat at $280^{\circ}C$. The $UO_2^{+2}$ aqueous solution are not adsorbed on the resins below pH 3.0, but the power of adsorption of $UO_2^{2+}$ increased rapidly above pH 4.0. The optimum equilibrium time for adsorption of metallic ions was twenty minutes and adsorptive power decreased in proportion to crosslinking size of the resins and order of dielectric constants of solvents used and the selective sequence for metal cations is in the order of $UO_2^{2+},\;Cu^{2+}\;and\;Nd^{3+}$.

  • The fission neutron reactions of $^{47}Ti(n.p)^{47}Sc$ and $^{93}Nb(n,{\alpha})^{90m}Y$, along with epicadmium neutron reaction of $^{96}Zr(n,{\gamma})^{97}Zr$ were used for the simultaneous determination of Ti, Nb and Zr in synthetic mixture. Prior to neutron irradiation, Ti, Zr and Nb in the mixture were separated together in one group through the cation exchange column of Dowex $50{\times}8$ resin using 0.5 M ${\alpha}$-hydroxy-iso-butyric acid as the eluent. After irradiation of the eluate the product nuclides, $^{97}Zr$, ^{47}Sc$ and ^{90m}Y$, were eluted sequentially through the same column with 0.5 M ${\alpha}$-HIBA, 0.5 M ${\alpha}$-HIBA-1 N HNO_3 and 0.5 M ${\alpha}$-HIBA-2 N HNO_3$ solution, respectively. The gamma-ray spectrometry was used for the measurement of the gamma-ray activities of the eluted nuclides. The detection limits of Nb, Ti and Zr were found to be 0.2 %, 0.01 % and 0.002 %, respectively.

  • The release of steroids such as progesterone, testosterone, estrone and estradiol were investigated in two types of block copolymer matrices, which were AB type block copolymer composed of poly(γ-benzyl-L-glutamate)[PBLG] as the A segment and polyoxypropylene[POP] as the B segment and ABA type triblock copolymer composed of the A segment and poly(propylene glycol)[PPG] as the B segment. The release rates of progesterone, estradiol and testosterone through PBLG-POP1 and PBLG-POP2 matrices and those of progesterone, estrone and testosterone through GPG1 of ABA type triblock copolymer were higher in an acidic solution than in a basic one. However, the release rate of estrone through PBLG-POP1 and PBLG-POP2 matrices and that of estradiol through GPG1 of ABA type triblock copolymer were higher in a basic and neutral solutions than in an acidic one. The order of release rate in three different matrices was GPG1 > PBLG-POP1 > PBLG-POP2. The results also showed that the molecular weight of steroids is inversely proportional to the rate of release.

  • The sulfonated PET-g-GMA ion-exchange fine fibers were synthesized by UV radiation-induced graft copolymerization using a photoinitiator, and their chemical structure and adsorption properties were investigated. The optimum values for synthetic conditions - UV intensity, reaction time, and reaction temperature were 450 W, 60 min, and $40^{\circ}C$, respectively. Maximum values of the degree of sulfonation and ion exchange capacity were 8.12 mmol/g and 3.25 meq/g, respectively. Tensile strength of sulfonated PET-g-GMA fine ion exchange fibers was lower than that of PET trunk polymer as the grafting reaction rates increased. It was shown that as for the adsorption rate of $Ca^{2+}$ and $Mg^{2+}$ by the sulfonated PET-g-GMA fine ion exchange fibers, magnesium ion is slower than calcium ion in the solution. However, in the mixture of the calcium and magnesium ions, the adsorption rate of calcium ion was much slower than that of magnesium ion.

The Clinical Comparisons of 10% Pentastarch and 20% Albumin in Priming Solutions for Cardiopulmonary Bypass in Cardiac Operations (개심술중 심폐우회 충전용객속에서의 10% 펜타스타치와 20% 알부민의 임상 비교)

  • Pentastarch is a new synthetic hydroxyethyl starch similar to hetastarch. We report on the clinical comparisons the clinical efficacy and safety of 10% pentastarch in prime solutions for CPB in cardiac operations with that of 20% serum albumin. During CPB, group P [n = 20] received 500ml of 10% pentastarch and group A [n = 20] received 100ml of 20% albumin in prime solutions The postoperative time of ICU stay in group P and the day and amount of chest drain, hospital stay in group A were longer [p<0.05]. Fresh whole blood and PRBC were added only in group A and a higher amount of hartman solution was added in group A during CPB [p<0.05]. Prothrombin time was prolonged preoperatively and 2 days postoperatively in group A and 7 days postoperatively in group P [p<0.05] but there were no significant differences in bleeding time or fibrinogen level. Platelet count was higher immediately postoperatively in group A and preoperatively and 1, 2, and 7 days postoperatively in group P [p<0.05].Total protein and albumin level were higher 1 day postoperatively in group A and 2 and 7 days postoperatively in group P [p<0.05]. BUN was increased 2 days postoperatively in group A and Cr was increased 1 day postoperatively in group P [p<0.05]. CPK was higher preoperatively and 1, 2, and 7 days postoperatively in group A and plasma hemoglobin level was also higher 2 and 7 days postoperatively in group A [p<0.05]. There were no significant differences in arterial blood gas analysis but higher pO2 and lower pCO2 levels were maintained in group P and ejection fraction was higher 7 days postoperatively in group P [p<0.05]. Both groups were improved postoperatively in NYHA class and the hemodynamic parameters such as MAP, CO, CI, SV, LVSWI were well maintained in group P [p<0.05]. The amount of blood products used was higher in group A and urine output was higher immediately postoperatively in group A and 1, 2 days postoperatively in group P and the chest output was higher in group A. The complications were developed in 7 patients in group A and 5 patients in group P and mortality was not present in both groups.In conclusion, 10% pentastarch is as safe and effective as 20% albumin in prime solutions for cardiopulmonary bypass in cardiac operations.

Hydrothermal Preparation and Sintering of Fine PSZT Powder (미세 PSZT분말의 수열합성 및 소결)

  • In preparing PSZT powder by hydrothermal synthesis, effects of reaction temperature, concentration of raw materials and mineralizer on crystallinity, particle size distribution, and dielectric constant were investigated. By varying the concentration of mineralizer and the ratio of Pb to Sr or Zr to Ti, crystalline PSZT powder, having the mean particle size of $0.3{\sim}15{\mu}m$, was prepared by hydrothermal synthesis in the temperature range of $120{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ for a 2h reaction. PSZT ceramics, having dielectric constant of 1000~3000, were prepared at $1150^{\circ}C$ for a 2h sintering reaction of the PSZT powders. Experimental results showed that the weight mean particle size of $0.5{\mu}m$ was obtained when the concentration of KOH in the solution was 10 wt % and the ratio of Pb to Sr was 0.95/0.05, that of Zr to Ti was 0.52/0.48. It also showed that the ceramics of dielectric constant of 2900 were prepared through sintering of this PSZT powder. Size of PSZT particles became smaller with its narrow distribution as the concentration of KOH increased up to 10 wt %. However, it came to be larger at this concentration and above. By adding small amount of Sr that would not affect that crystallinity of particles we can improve dielectric property of sintered materials. Addition of Zr may shift the major crystal phase of synthetic PSZT powder from tetragonal to rhombohedral phase.

Effects of Plant Growth Regulators on Haploid Production of Wheat (밀 반수체 생산에서 식물생장조절제의 영향)

  • The introduction of doubled haploid (DH) approach into breeding programs has reduced the times and population sizes required for the production of pure lines. We carried out the experiment for development on effective method of producing haploid in wheat. Emasculated spikelets of wheat were pollinated with maize pollen and cultured in the solution containing 40 g/L sucrose and 2,4-D, NAA, 2,4,5-T and dicamba 24 h after pollination, and then incubated until embryo rescue. Fourteen to sixteen days after pollination, the embryos are excised and cultured in half-strength MS basal medium supplemented with 20 g/L sucrose and 1 mg/L NAA. The type of plant growth regulators was found to be most significant in production of haploid plants. The application of synthetic auxins to pollinated florets, stimulates haploid embryo development to a stage where the embryos can be rescued onto nutrient media. The percentage of seeded florets was significantly affected by 100 mg/L 2,4-D, 150 mg/L 2,4,5-T and 50 mg/L dicamba. The percentage of embryos formed was significantly increased by treatment with 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T at 100 mg/L, and dicamba at 50 mg/L, but the treatments with 150 mg/L 2,4-D inhibited embryo development and plant regeneration. The optimum application time of plant growth regulators was 24 hrs after pollination.

Behavior of Synthetic Layered Double Hydroxides in Soils (인공합성된 Layered Double Hydroxides의 토양중 행동)

  • This study was to elucidate the effects of layered double hydroxides(LDHs) application on the chemical properties of the soils along with the fate of the applied LDHs. The effects of LDHs application were compared with those of calcium carbonate widely used for the neutralization of acidic soils. Incorporation of LDHs into the soil resulted in higher pH value and $Mg^{2+}$ content in soil leachate than that of $CaCO_3$ treatment. There was no significant difference in water-soluble P content in both the treatments. However, $Al^{3+}$ and $Si^{4+}$ contents were decreased by LDHs and $CaCO_3$ treatment, even though a large amount of $Al^{3+}$ was released into soil solution with the disintegration of LDHs framework. LDHs structure in soil was gradually disintegrated from the its original layered structure under acidic condition of soil. Therefore, this study suggests that LDHs could be utilized as a carrier of functional substances to enhance the efficiency of various ago-chemicals without any ill effects on the soil environments.

Application of Porous Nanofibers Comprising Hollow α-Fe2O3 Nanospheres Prepared by Applying Both PS Template and Kirkendall Diffusion Effect for Anode Materials in Lithium-ion Batteries (커켄달 효과와 주형법을 통해 합성한 α-Fe2O3 중공입자로 구성된 다공성1차원 구조체의 리튬 이차전지 음극활물질 적용)

  • Porous nanofibers comprising hollow ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres were prepared by applying both template method and Kirkendall diffusion effect to electrospinning process. During heat-treatment processes, the solid Fe nano-metals formed by initial heat-treatment in the carbon matrix were converted into the hollow structured ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres. In particular, PS nanobeads added in the spinning solution were decomposed and formed numerous channels in the composite, which served as a good pathway for Kirkendall diffusion gas. The resulting porous nanofibers comprising hollow ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres were applied as an anode material for lithium-ion batteries. The discharge capacities of the nanofibers for the 30th cycle at a high current density of $1.0A\;g^{-1}$ was $776mA\;h\;g^{-1}$. The good lithium ion storage property was attributed to the synergetic effects of the hollow ${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$ nanospheres and the interstitial nanovoids between the nanospheres. The synthetic method proposed in this study could be applied to the preparation of porous nanofibers comprising hollow nanospheres with various composition for various applications, including energy storage.

Determination of fluoride in fluorite mine wastewater by ion chromatography with post-wash technique (후세척-이온크로마토그래피를 이용한 형석 광산 폐수 중 플루오라이드 정량)

  • Simple post-wash method by ion chromatography (IC) was established for the rapid and precise determination of fluoride ion in wastewater from mine in fluorite mineralized area. High sulfate in sample was retained in a pre-column and less strongly held fluoride ion was transferred to the principal separation system using modified conventional IC with switching technique. An analytical column with high capacity (AS 9 HC) was used as a pre-column to retain the amount of high sulfate. A guard column (AG 14) as a separation column was used to increase the response of fluoride and reduce the system pressure. According to the recovery of fluoride ion with one detector and the observation of sulfate peak with another conductivity detector, the optimum switching time of 10-port chromatographic injector was 4.3 min. The limit of detection (S/N = 3) of fluoride in synthetic solution containing $500mg\;L^{-1}$ sulfate was $2.4{\mu}g/L$, with $25{\mu}L$ sample volume.
