  • Forest-edge communities dominated by heliophytic scrambling species were first studied using the Zurich-Montpellier school's method in South Korea. Mallotetum japonicae, Clerodendretum trichotomae, Akebietum quinatae, Lonicero-Puerarietum lobatae, Spiraetum salicifoliae, dioscoreo-Actinidietum argutae, Sorbarietum stellipilae, Tripterygietum regelii were distinguished and described. Most syntaxa are suggested as now. The order Dioscoreo-Puerarietalia lobatae of the Rosetea multiflorae is representative of the Korean mantle vegetation, which subordinates the Lonicero-Puerarion lobatae and the Dioscoreo-Actinidion argutae. synecological characteristics of all syntaxa were briefly noted.

  • The distributional characteristics about 8 syntaxa of mantle communitly (Mantelgesellschaften) in South Korea was studied. This study was carried out by geographic and bioclimatic analysis on 326 phytosociological releves on the basis of syntaxonomy and hierarchical system of mantle community already obtained from Zurich-Montpellier School's method, which involves direct analysis on the latitude, altitude, annual mean temperature and the lowest temperature of each site. The distributional characteristics of mantle communities in South Korea appeared from South to North in the order of Mallotetum japonicae, Clerodendretum trichotomae, Akebietum quinatae, Lonicero-Puerarietum lobatae, Spiraetum salicifoliae. Dioscoreo-Actinidietum argutae, Sorbarietum stellipilae and Tripterygietum regelii. It is suggested that the information (syntaxonomical, floral, geographic and bioclimatic data) of Japan, North Korea and China is essential to determine the distributional characteristics of mantle community in Korean Peninsula.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the vegetation, distribution and growth pattern of Glehnia littoralis community by the DCA ordination method in eastern coast of Korea. The number of plant species growth with G. littoralis in natural habitat was found 51 taxa, and species of high frequency among 51 taxa was Ixeris repens, Calystegia soldanella, Carex kobomugi, Elymus mollis, Lathyrus japonica and Zoysia macrostachya. Indicator species of Z. macrostachya, Linaria japonica, C. soldanella, I. repens, Carex pumila, Artemisia capillaris, Oenothera biennis, L. japonica and E. mollis in G. littoralis community was differential species of syntaxonomy. C. kobomugi, Z. macrostachya, E. mollis, Cynodon dactylon and L. japonica was the distribution in dryness sand and moisture sandyloam, I. repens, C. soldanella, L. japonica and C. pumila was the distribution in dryness sand. In coastal dune, I. repens, C. soldanella, Salsola komarovi and G. littoralis combined strength of the distribution, and sand of coast was typical of the habitat.

  • Syntaxonomy and Synecology on Quercus variabilis forests in Daecheong-dam basin was carried out using the methods of Braun-Blanquet phytosociology. 6 syntaxa classified as species compositions described were Quercus variabilis community, Platycarya strobilacea-Quercus variabilis community(typicum subcommunity, dictamnus dasycarpus subcommunity), Quercetum variabili-serratae, Zelkova serrata-Quercus variabilis community and Dendranthema boreale-Quercus variabilis community. All syntaxa were shown habitat environmental conditions including steep inclination of more than 30°, high rock exposure rate of more than 50% and South-facing slope. These communities excepting Dendranthema boreale-Quercus variabilis community classified as natural vegetation were identified as low emergence rate of annual plants and species compositions composed native species, so it was confirmed that relatively natural succession were proceeding well. Quercetum variabili-serratae and Dendranthema boreale-Quercus variabilis community distributed forested hillslope of open water edge were representative Quercus variabilis syntaxa in Daecheong-dam basin.

  • The phytosocialogical study on the coastal sand dune vegetation of the East Coast was carried out. 180 phytosociological relev$\acute{e}$s of 62 sites in the East Coast were used in this study. In addition, already published syntaxa and the phytosociological hierarchy in Korea and Japan were used and comparative analyses of syntaxonomy, synecology, syngeography, and syndynamics were performed in the study. In this study, the flora was investigated 30 families, 66 genera, 77 taxa and 3 vegetation types were identified : the coastal drift-line annual communities (Calystegio soldanellae-Salsoletum komarovii), the dune glasslands communities (Elymo-Caricetum kobomugi, Carex kobomugi typical community, Elymus mollis community, Calystegia soldanella community, Zoysia macrostachya community, Cynodon dactylon community, Carex pumila community), and the dune shrubs communities (Linario-Viticetum rotundifoliae, Vitex rotundifolia community, Rosa rugosa community). The aspect of transition in the coastal sand dune vegetation of the East Coast were identified as follows : (1) reduced constancy degree and cover degree of Glehnia littoralis in each community; (2) lack of Ischaemum anthephoroides in Linario-Viticetum rotundifoliae (3) simplified species composition in Vitex rotundifolia community. Unstable habitat condition by external interference seemed to has caused the reduction of 2 taxa, Glehnia littoralis and Ischaemum anthephoroides, that usually grow in the second dune. In addition, we found changes in the distribution of the dune shrub communities influenced by rising temperature of the East Coast as results of the global warming. The results on the distribution of the dune shrub communities in this study demonstrated that the limit of the Rosa rugosa community made $0^{\circ}$ 44'N to the North and the vegetative limit of the Vitex rotundifolia community made $0^{\circ}$ 28'N to the North, respectively compared with the previously phytosociological studies. This study investigated the coastal sand dune vegetation, syntaxonomy, habitat condition and human disturbunce of the East Coast, and this will provide important information as basic data for the coastal ecosystem.

  • There is no willow riparian vegetation in Jeju Island, Korea. Instead, a genetically-isolated population of Adina rubella is found in some parts of the riparian system. We describe its syntaxonomy and synecology. A total of 27 phytosociological relev$\acute{e}$s were collected, 11 relev$\acute{e}$s from 91 sites and 16 relev$\acute{e}$s from the previously published relevant materials. Data were analyzed by traditional Braun-Blanquet method and multivariate PCoA (Principal coordinates analysis). New syntaxa are distinguished, Adinion rubellae all. nov. and its type association Tripogono-Adinetum rubellae ass. nov. with two subassociations, typicum and rhododendretosum poukhanensae. Adino-Rhododendretum poukhanensae Itow et al. 1993 was discarded owing to mismatch of syntaxonomy and syngeography of Adina and Rhododendron phytocoena. The alliance Adinion is Jeju's regional and partly ombrotrophic vegetation occurring in pothole and rock crevice where are independent on ground-water table. We also suggest a revised alliance, Rhododendrion poukhanensae Lee 2004 ex. hoc loco in Korean peninsula, as a corresponding syntaxon to Adinion, which completely differs from Phragmito-Salicion. Finally we pointed out that Adina phytocoena requiring an absolutely monitoring has been threatened by river maintenance project of local government.

  • The forest vegetation in Mts. Ilwol, Chongryang, Milim, Honglim, Yongdung, Agi and 607 m peak of the northen part of Kyungpook province, Korea was classified and described in terms of the physiognomy and numerical syntaxonomy. The forest was divided into the ten communities belonging to the three groups by the species combination of the tree layer based on their dominances. The three groups also were corresponded well with the result of cluster analysis. But the classification by TWINSPAN showed that the vegetation was divided into only two groups for having any ecological senses. A result of DCA was corresponded closely with that of TWINSPAN and explained some environmental factors. From the above results, it is concluded that the classification by the species combination of the tree layer is also applicable to the classification of plant communities. The above results were compared with the existing study results of the ZM phytosociology.

  • A survey of syntaxa of vegetation of evergreen broad-leaved forests in Korea, class Camellietea japonicae is presented. 399 releve's were arranged two phytosociological tables, each representing an alliance. A synoptic table comprising all alliances is presented. The vegetation of evergreen broad-leaved forests is divided into three alliances including twelve new associations: (1) Querco - Castanopsion all. nov., split into four associations, Castanopsietum sieboldii, Quercetum acutae, Quercetum myrsinaefoliae and Litseetum japonicae; (2) Machilo-Camellion all. nov., separate into ten associations, Machiletum thunbergii, Pittosporetum tobirae, Aucubetum japonicae, Neolitsetum sericeae, Euryetum emarginatae, Elaeagnetum macrophyllae, Camellietum japonicae, Theo-Camellietom japonicae, Raphiolepietum umbellatae and Daphniphylletum macropodae; (3) Dendropanaco-Castanopsion sieboldii including one association, Hosto minoris-Castanopsietum sieboldii. The alliances are floristically and ecologically characterized and their distribution in Korea shown on the map.
