  • After initial recovery from acute carbon monoxide(CO) intoxication, some patients occasionally undergo severe neuropsychiatric deterioration, which is called postanomic delayed encephalopathy(sequelae). This is the clinical study about one patient, a 53-year-old woman, diagnosed with delayed encephalopathy after acute CO intoxication. The patient's symptoms were mental dysfunction including memory impairment and disorientation, aphasia, atrophy and weakness throughtout the body. She had completely recovered after an anomic episode, but the neurological symptoms that developed were preceded by an interval of apparent nomality.(the 'lucid interval'). She was characterized as suffering deficiency syndrome of the heart(心虛) and was prescribed for her an Ansinschungnoi-tang(安神淸腦湯), and thereafter her symptoms improved remarkably. For the evaluation of clinical improvement, we use the Modified Barthel Index(MBI).

  • The purpose of this study was to report one clinical case of spinocerebellar ataxia(SCA) type 1 improved by herbal medicine and oriental medical treatment. As a treatment, Yukmijihwang-tang(Liuweidihuangtang)-gamibang, acupuncture, and moxa were tried upon the patient for 21 days in order to relieve the symptoms. In terms of observing the changes of symptoms, the progress of patient's condition was evaluated periodically by using the Korean-mini mental state examination(K-MMSE), Modified Barthel Index(MBI), Functional Independence Measure(FIM). In accordance with the observation under K-MMSE, MBI, FIM, the patient's symptoms had gradually improved throughout the treatment. Therefore, this report suggests that Yukmijihwang-tang(Liuweidihuangtang)-gamibang, acupuncture and moxa were probably effective in the treatment of SCA type 1.

  • Objectives: Chronic Prostatitis/Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome(CP/CPPS) is diagnosed on the basis of symptoms, principally pain or discomfort in the pelvic region. Pathophysiology and treatment of this disease has not been established. CP/CPPS's main symptom appears to be an incurable pain and Collateral disease's(絡病) symptoms also appear as incurable pain in general. The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effects of Gyejibokryeong-hwan(桂枝茯苓丸) based on removing Stasis and freeing Collateral disease on CP/CPPS in which pain appears largely. Methods: The patient was treated with Gyejibokryeong-hwan. National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index (NIH-CPSI) was used to assess treatment effect. Results: NIH-CPSI and Pelvic pain decreased significantly after treatment. Conclusions: Gyejibokryeong-hwan was effective in treating CP/CPPS. Especially, there was a clear effect on Pelvic pain among the symptoms.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of feeding leaf positions on the growth, net formation of fruits, and occurrence of leaf yellowing symptoms (LYS) in muskmelon plants. Plants having five or ten more leaves above the fruit-bearing node produced the greater biomass than those of plants having equal or five less leaves above the fruit-bearing node. The number of leaves above the fruit-bearing node also influenced on the occurrence of LYS. The number of plants with LYS decreased as the number of leaves borne on the nodes above the fruit-bearing node increased. The LYS infected ratio of BL-5 treatment were the greatest, while fruit weight of BL+5 treatment were the greatest among all the tested treatments. In addition, the net formation of BL-5 treatment showed the poorest. Results indicated that maintaining the higher number of leaves over the fruit-bearing node might be feasible the practical method for coping physiological damages from yellowing symptoms.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the association between psychosocial work environments and depressive symptoms among Korean registered nurses. Methods: The study population of 331 registered nurses was derived from the 2014 Korean Working Condition Survey (KWCS). Depressive symptom was assessed using the WHO-5 wellbeing index. Results: The thirty-five percentage of Korean registered nurses reported the risk for depressive symptom. Korean nurses with higher 'work-family conflict' were more likely at the risk of depression almost 1.83 (95% CI 1.04~3.20) times than their counterpart. Higher 'possibilities for development' were more likely decrease almost 60% of the risk of depressive symptom. Conclusion: Work-family conflict and possibility of development were associated with depressive symptom among Korean registered nurses. We suggest future researches identifying strategies for decreasing work-family conflict and its negative effects.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the differences in quality of life in patients who received breast conserving surgery (BCS) or modified radical mastectomy (MRM) for breast cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 100 women with breast cancer who underwent either BCS or MRM between September 2011 and April 2012 at a private health center and completed their chemotherapy and radiation therapy cycles were included in the study. To assess the quality of life, we used a demographic questionnaire, the European Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the Quality of Life assessment in Breast Cancer (EORTC QLQ-BR23). Results: Using QLQ-C30, we found that patients who underwent BCS had better functional status and fewer symptoms than patients who underwent MRM. In QLQ-BR23, independent factors improving the functional scales were BCS, higher level of education and marital status (married); independent factors improving symptoms were BCS, higher level of education, younger age and low and normal body mass index (BMI). In QLQ-C30, independent factors affecting the functional and symptom scales were only BCS and higher level of education. Conclusions: We determined that patients who received BCS had better functional status and less frequent symptoms than patients who underwent MRM.

  • In order to investigate the therapeutic effect of SSC, NC/Nga animal model resembling the AD-like symptoms were used to measure the changes in cytokines and histology. SSC prescription group showed significant decrease in the atopic dermatitis clinical index by 40.2% compared to that of the control. The SSC prescription had significant effect on immune cells that are related to inducing AD symptoms. SSC prescription also increased the ratio of immune cells in DLN that were not directly involved in AD symptoms. SSC prescription group showed significant decrease in the level of cytokines within spleen cells and DLN. The prescription also decreased the level of immunoglobulin IgE levels in serum by 25.3%. The thickness of epidermis and dermis as well as the precipitation of erythrocytes were also observed. The results indicate the therapeutic effect of SSC in the treatment of atopic dermatitis through immune modulation. The study will provide a broader applications in the treatment of atopic dermatitis. Particularly, skin regeneration effect and supplemental use of topical application of SS in atopic dermatitis treatment had been reported previously, and further investigation on the dose dependent effect as well as skin irritation studies of SS should be followed.
