  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to report the clinical effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment on interstitial cystitis. Methods: The patient diagnosed with Interstitial cystitis/Bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) was treated with Korean medicine treatment during 22 days of hospitalization. The patient received Korean medicine treatment including herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, moxibustion, cupping and extracorporeal magnetic stimulation therapy. The effect of treatment on IC/BPS was evaluated through the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS), voiding diary, and Interstitial Cystitis Symptom Index/Problem Index (ICSI/ICPI). Results: After the treatment, the clinical symptoms of IC/BPS such as pelvic pain, pelvic pressure, frequent urination and urinary urgency were improved. Also, the patient had better scores in ICSI/ICPI. Conclusions: This case report proved that the Korean medicine treatment may be effective for improving clinical symptoms of IC/BPS. However, a large-scale clinical study is needed in the future to prove the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment for IC/BPS.

  • Objective : The objective of this study is to report a case of atopic dermatitis (AD) treated with Hoeyeok-tang. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the course of herbal medicine treatment in a 20-year-old male patient with a topic dermatitis. Changes in main symptoms were confirmed based on the gross findings and assessed using SCORing Atopic Dermatitis(SCORAD) Index. Accompanying symptoms and side effects that can be referred to for diagnosis were analyzed By referring to the clinical records. Results : According to the Shanghanlun provision, the patient's AD was diagnosed with Terminal-yin Gwakran 389th provision. The patient was treated with Hoeyeok-tang for 90 days. The severity of pruritus decreased, and SCORAD Index was decreased from 44.6 to 8.4. VAS for eye fatigue and nausea was decreased from 10 to 5, also. No particular side effects occurred to the patient while taking the Hoeyeok-tang. Conclusions : The result suggests the clinical applicability of 389th provision of Shanghanlun.

  • Background: Workers are often exposed to hazardous heat due to their work environment, leading to various injuries. As a result of climate change, heat-related injuries (HRIs) are becoming more problematic. This study aims to identify critical contributing factors to the severity of occupational HRIs. Methods: This study analyzed historical injury reports from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Contributing factors to the severity of HRIs were identified using text mining and model-free machine learning methods. The Multinomial Logit Model (MNL) was applied to explore the relationship between impact factors and the severity of HRIs. Results: The results indicated a higher risk of fatal HRIs among middle-aged, older, and male workers, particularly in the construction, service, manufacturing, and agriculture industries. In addition, a higher heat index, collapses, heart attacks, and fall accidents increased the severity of HRIs, while symptoms such as dehydration, dizziness, cramps, faintness, and vomiting reduced the likelihood of fatal HRIs. Conclusions: The severity of HRIs was significantly influenced by factors like workers' age, gender, industry type, heat index , symptoms, and secondary injuries. The findings underscore the need for tailored preventive strategies and training across different worker groups to mitigate HRIs risks.

  • Object : In this study, the effect of herbal external therapy, aromatherapy, herb medication against atopic dermatitis was investigated. Method : Atopic dermatitis grade and the effect of medication was determined using Kunz type and SCORAD index. Atopic dermatitos lesion was checked by taking pictures Result : The patient's admission SCORAD index was 74.2 but during 32 days admission treatment the patients's symptoms are getting reduced. At last when she discharged, the SCORAD index was 16.1. Conclusion : In this study, herbal external therapy, aromatherapy and herb medication were shown to treat atopic dermatitis effectively by decreasing itching, oozing, crust, dryness, lichenification. It is very possible that external therapy can offer a valuable mode of the treatment of not only atopic dermatitis but also another eczema.

Methods : In this study, we conducted treatment based on Meridian Tendino-musculature Acupuncture to patients. And we also carried out treatments like herb medicine and cupping therapy etc. Tsui's score, Neck Disability Index(NDI), Visual analogue scale(VAS) and angle of C-spine were measured once a month to evaluate the severeness of symptom. Results : After 24 sessions of treatment, there were improvements on Tsui's score, Neck Disability Index(NDI), Visual analogue scale(VAS) and angle of C-spine. Conclusions : Korean medical treatment based on Meridian Tendino-musculature Acupuncture may be effective for relieving symptoms of cervical dystonia.

  • Smoking is one of the three major risk factors for vascular disease along with hypertension and hyperlipidemia. It is true that smoking has a negative effect on the circulatory system, and the frequency of coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease is significantly increased in smokers. Many epidemiological studies report that smokers have an approximately two-fold increased risk of coronary artery disease compared to non-smokers. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between cerebral blood flow change and depression index after acute smoking. Cerebral blood flow tests were performed before and after smoking in 8 subjects. Changes in blood flow after smoking were correlated with the depression score and negatively correlated with the depression score. In particular, there was a strong correlation with changes in blood flow in anterior cerebral artery. It is well known that changes in blood flow after smoking have a negative effect. In addition, considering the study that smoking aggravates the symptoms of depression, it was found that smoking and depression are factors that negatively affect each other.

  • Objective : An adequate measurement for Atopic Dermatitis(AD) is essential for studies about the treatment of AD. To establish a new and adequate scoring system for AD in Korean medicine, we reviewed existing studies on AD outcome measurement in Korean medicine. Method : We searched for reviews on measurements of AD or studies which used an AD outcome measurement at the Korean Traditional Knowledge Portal from 1995 to June, 2008. And then we reviewed the pattern identification in AD patients and the outcome measurements for AD in each study. Results : 1. Among 25 studies, the most common measurement for AD was SCORAD(the severity SCORing of Atopic Dermatitis index), there were 16 studies. There was one study which used the Jakob T scoring system, one study which used ADSI(the Atopic Dermatitis Severity Index), and there were 7 studies which established or used a new severity scoring system for AD. 2. In Korean medicine, AD caused by Damp-Heat is accompanied by erythema, papulation, oozing and crust, Damp-Heat accompanied by Spleen-Gi deficiency is frequently found in pediatric patients, and in adults who have indigestion. Symptoms of AD caused by blood deficiency and Wind-Dryness include lichenification, dryness, scale and pigmentation. AD caused by toxic Heat in the blood system has symptoms similar to some Damp-Heat pattern along with symptoms of blood deficiency and Wind-Dryness. Conclusion : We need to establish a new severity scoring system which reflects pattern identifications and treatments with Korean medicine, and we should assess the validity, reliability, and sensitivity of the new scoring system.
