Composting has recently become popular as a means of recycling swine manure into products for sale off the farm, but bulking agent(usually sawdust) are expensive and availability is limited. This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of fly ash as a bulking agent on the composting of swine manure and to analyze the effective substitution rate of fly ash mixed with swine manure for sawdust. Fly ash was able to be substituted for sawdust and the most effective substitution rate are 50% of sawdust. According to the results the advanced research and development are required, the effect of swine manure with fly ash on the soil properties, forage composition and animal performance.
Bacterial diversity and the composition of individual communities during the composting process of swine and mushroom cultural wastes in a field-scale composter (Hazaka system) were examined using a PCR-based approach. The composting process was divided into six stages based on recorded temperature changes. Phylogenetic analysis of eighty 16S rRNA sequences from uncultured composting bacterial groups revealed the presence of representatives from three divisions, including plant pathogenic bacteria, high-molecule-degrading bacteria and spore-forming bacteria. The plant pathogen A. tumefaciens gradually decreased in abundance during the composting process and eventually disappeared during the thermophilic and cooling stage. A bacterium homologous to Bacillus humi first appeared at the early thermophilic stage and was established at the intermediate thermophilic, post-thermophilic, and cooling stages. It was not possible to isolate the B. humi during any of the stages using general culture techniques.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of artificial filaments equipped in the aeration tank of aerobic·fermentation system on the removal efficiency of swine wastes which were fermented an aerobically and thus containing high nitrogen. Two aerobic fermentation system each consist4s of 4 tanks ; storage tank, 1st and 2nd aeration tank and settling tank were run before and one or three weeks after equipment of artificial filament in the aeration tanks. Total solids concentration tended to increase by aerobic fermentation in all running periods. However, decreased(P<0.05) total nitrogen concentration was shown three weeks after the equipment of artificial filament. Ammonia nitrogen concentration also largely decreased(p<0.05) in both running periods of one and three weeks after equipment of artificial filaments. These results suggest that the artificial filaments may improve the removal efficiency of nitrogen in swine wastewater containing high nitrogen during aerobic fermentation.
The signification of calorie/water (C/W) ratio was investigated in the treatment of highly concentrated organic wastes by thermophilic oxic process (TOP). Swine waste was used in this study. When C/W ratio was 1.6, most of swine waste was decomposed and all water was evaporated in the 24-h injection cycle. To improve treatment efficiency of TOP treating swine waste, the effect of shortening the swine waste injection cycle was examined. The shortening of injection cycle was conducted to stimulate the activity of thermophilic bacteria. A high temperature in the reactor was maintained by shortening of the injection cycle. When the swine waste injection cycle was shortened, the C/W ratio was fixed at 1.6. As a result, by shortening the swine waste injection cycle from 24-h to 12 and 6-h, the maximum loading rate of swine waste per day could be improved 1.9 and 3.5 times, respectively.
Livestock wastes are considered as major environmental pollutants because they contain high concentration of organic materials. In 2001, The Environmental Department reported that stock farmers were increasing as 5.1%/year, which resulted in a gradual increase in livestock wastes generation. The direct disposal of livestock wastes create several environmental problems. Thus, several countries banned the disposal of livestock wastes in environment including aquatic systems. Recently, aeration-based liquid fertilization was considered as potential way for the disposal of livestock wastes. In this study, next generation sequencing (NGS) analysis was used to understand the microbial community changes during liquid fertilization of livestock wastes. Microbial community was compared with liquid fertilizer physicochemical analysis such as $BOD_5$, $COD_{Mn}$ pH, N (Nitrogen), P (Phosphorus), K (Potassium) etc. The physicochemical parameters and bacterial community results pave the way for producing effective livestock-based fertilizer. By comparing the physical characteristics of the manure with microbial community changes, it is possible to optimize the conditions for producing effective fertilizer.
The trend toward intensification of livestock raising, confinement in barn has increased in recent days. The move toward concentrated animal feeding operations reduces per unit costs and permits farmers to better earnings in spite of fluctuation in hog prices. However, this also results in outbreaks of a lot of animal wastes and odorous compounds. Emissions of these malodorous compounds produced from concentrated animal feeding operations have become a concern for both public and regulatory agencies and are causing the complaints of residents in rural area. For competitive sustainable swine production industry, odor management plans systematically identify potential odor sources, determine control strategies to reduce these odors, and establish criteria for implementing these strategies. Since, the malodor originates from microbial activities involving a variety of microbes, understanding the characteristics of the microflora present in swine manure is essential for developing effective odor control techniques. This paper reviews the available information in the literature related to the types of bacteria in swine manure, the potential odorous compounds associated with different bacterial genera, and the corresponding techniques used to control odor based on microbiological principles.
In order to investigate the compost process and the evaporating phenomenon, a rotary reversing compost system has been tested in a swine farm. During the summer season, the compost temperature was varied in the range of 50~$60^{\circ}C.$ and the ash content was increased by 12.8 % with the average of 24.7 % at the end of phase. In the winter season, the compost temperature was varied in the range of 40~$57^{\circ}C.$ and the ash content was increased to 8.5 % showing the average of 18 % at the end of phase. In summer, the compost facility could handle all of the animal waste, but it could not handle 1/4~1/3 of the animal excrement during the winter. The required amount of sawdust by this method could be reduced to 1/3 than that of the mixing method at the beginning of compost process.
