In this study, the efficiency of microsatellite (MS) markers for pork quality was examined and further, their suitability to domestic pork industry also was verified, by measuring meat quality parameters of Berkshire breeds. A total of 323 pigs of Berkshire breeds were slaughtered and subjected to meat quality evaluation. In addition, the genomic DNAs from blood samples of slaughtered pigs were used for genotyping analysis of 50 MS markers. The results revealed that Berkshire breeds have excellent meat quality, compared with the popular domestic breeds such as Duroc, Yorkshire, and Landrace. Noticeably, the Berkshire breeds exhibited a significant post-mortem pH24hr ($5.88{\pm}0.01$) and fat content ($2.878{\pm}0.06$). Through the linkage analysis between MS markers, 14 MS markers showed significant association with meat quality traits (p<0.05). Maximum significant differences of 0.55 pH24hr value and 2.04% fat content were observed between the highest and lowest allele populations. If these 14 MS markers are applied to the pork quality diagnosis kit, the synergistic effect can be expected in meat quality parameters such as meat color, fat content, pH 24 hr, cooking loss, drip loss and water-holding capacity.

Meat quality has always been one of the most important factors that controls the choice of pork consumers and is of great interest in the pig industry. In this study, we identified a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in the enoyl-CoA delta isomerase 2 (ECI2) gene in Berkshire pigs (n = 430) by analyzed the association between the SNP and meat quality traits. The non-synonymous SNP in the ECI2 gene is located at c.608 C > G and resulted in an amino acid change from threonine to serine. Significant associations between the SNP and meat quality traits, such as redness (CIE a), and the $pH_{24hr}$, were revealed in both the dominant and co-dominant models, whereas carcass weight, drip loss, and fat content and moisture content were significantly associated only with the dominant model. In barrow, the SNP was significantly associated with CIE a, drip loss, and $pH_{24hr}$, whereas in gilt, only a significant relationship with moisture content was observed. GG genotype pigs had a higher $pH_{24hr}$ and lower drip loss. Because $pH_{24hr}$ and drip loss are considered the most important meat quality traits, GG genotype pork is high-quality meat compared to that from other genotypes. In conclusion, the SNP in the ECI2 gene is significantly associated with several meat quality traits. These traits and could be as genetic markers in molecular breeding programs for improving meat quality.

The present study was performed to investigate the effects of the plane of nutrition on growth performance and meat quality traits, especially marbling and PSE (pale, soft, and exudative), in finishing pigs. One hundred and four barrows and 102 gilts born to Yorkshire ${\times}$ Landrace dams and Duroc sires were randomly allocated to 16 pens at approximately 80-kg body weight, with 13 animals housed per pen except for two pens. Each eight pens received a diet containing either 3.4 Mcal ME/kg and 0.98% total lysine (high plane) or 3.1 Mcal ME/kg and 0.81% total lysine (medium plane). All animals were slaughtered at approximately 112 kg BW on an average, after which the Longissimus muscle (LM) was analyzed physicochemically. The ADG, ADFI, gain:feed as well as marbling score did not differ between the two dietary groups, whereas backfat thickness was greater in the high-plane group than in the medium-plane group (24.1 vs. 22.5 mm P<0.05). No LM exhibited PSE, i.e. $L^*$ (lightness) > 50, pH < 6.0 and drip loss > 5.0%, nor were these PSE-related variables influenced by the dietary treatment. Contents of crude protein and fat in LM did not differ between the two dietary groups. In conclusion, the present results suggest that growth performance and the occurrence of the PSE or 'watery' carcass are not influenced significantly by increasing the plane of nutrition in finishing pigs when the finisher is adequate nutritionally for supporting maximal lean growth. However, increasing the plane of nutrition is likely to result in an increase in fat deposition.
As the supply and demand of pork has become a significant concern in Korea, controlling it has become a critical challenge for the industry. However, compared to the demand for pork, which has relatively stable consumption, it is not easy to maintain a stable supply. As the preparation of measures for a supply-demand crisis response and supply control in the pig industry has emerged as an important task, it has become necessary to establish a stable supply model and create an appropriate manual. In this study, a pork supply prediction model is constructed using reported data from the pig traceability system. Based on the derived results, a method for determining the supply-demand crisis stage using a statistical approach was proposed. From the results of the analysis, working days, African swine fever, heat wave, and Covid-19 were shown to affect the number of pigs graded in the market. A test of the performance of the model showed that both in-sample error rate and out-sample error rate were between 0.3 - 7.6%, indicating a high level of predictive power. Applying the forecast, the distribution of the confidence interval of the predicted value was established, and the supply crisis stage was identified, evaluating supply-demand conditions.
Acceptance of antibiotic growth promoters (AGP) in agricultural animal production is rapidly disappearing. Both government regulations and consumer preference are driving this change. Producers in any country that seek export markets will be forced to give up AGP if they are to sell to the EU and many other markets. This report will first review the history of AGP use in the animal industry and the concerns about development of antimicrobial resistance. A description of the development and structure of the gut and how it is affected by AGP administration will conclude with results of studies to replace AGP with antimicrobial organic acids.
In order to take measures for solving conflicts between Korean government such as MOMAF(Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries) and MAF(Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry) and the relevant industry circles such as KSA(Korea Swine Association) and KODA(Korea Ocean Dumping Association) regarding the prohibition of marine disposal of livestock. excreta wastes from land, the present conditions of marine disposal of livestock excreta wastes and the standpoints of MOMAF, MAF, KSA and KODA were reviewed in Korea.
Technologies on preimplantation porcine embryos have been developed quickly and significantly. Successful development of systems for culture of porcine zygotes to the blastocyst stage has made it possible to utilize follicular oocytes for in vitro production of embryos and thus stimulated research on various embryo technologies. Recent technological development of embryo cryopreservation, separation of X- and Y-bearing spermatozoa and non-surgical embryo transfer has also made it easy to utilize in vivo- and in vitro-produced embryos for artificial manipulation to produce clones and transgenic pigs. Further progress in overcoming various problems associated with each embryo technology will result in acceptable efficiency to utilize porcine embryos with a high or increased quality. Combining these technologies will accelerate further expansion of the swine industry not only for meat production but also for the production of therapeutic recombinant proteins and xonografts.
Avian influenza viruses infect humans, horses, swine, other mammals, and a wide variety of domesticated and wild birds. Modem poultry industries worldwide are at risk of infection with avian influenza. Low pathogenic avian influenza can easily change to highly pathogenic form especially when introduced into areas of high density commercial poultry. Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza are becoming progressively more expensive to control according to the growth of the poultry industry worldwide. Future strategies for avian influenza control and prevention should involve a combination of early detection and characterization of virus using advanced molecular biologic techniques, quarantine, selective depopulation and vaccination of flocks.
New emerging post weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) threatening swine industry worldwide and investigation of the etiological agent is underway. The porcine circovirus (PCV) consistently identified from PMWS pigs and research result indicate that there is strong relationship between PCV and PMWS. Fauns with PMWS submitted pigs suffered from various PMWS typical signs and necropsy finding showed lymph node anomalies. The PCV DNA was amplified from inguinal lymph node collected from pigs with PMWS. PCV specific primers were successfully amplified PCV DNAs and were able to differentiate PCV type I and II. We have identified noble PCV virus with genetic variation. The virus showed insertion of the nucleic acid at the 5' of the genome but did not have PCR product with primer set corresponding to PCV type II virus.
A total of 131 Pasteurella (P.) multocida strains were isolated from the lungs of 1,064 pigs with respiratory clinical signs nationwide during 2009-2010 and 2013-2014. The strains of P. multocida comprised 77.1% serotype A and 22.9% serotype D. Analysis of a recent P. multocida outbreak in Korean pigs showed that the isolation rate of serotype D decreased annually. The incidence of antimicrobial resistance, as measured using minimal inhibitory concentration values, has decreased recently. Overall, further studies to characterize P. multocida isolated from pigs in Korea are needed to prevent P. multocida infection in the Korean swine industry
