  • Cement bonded boards of 10 mm in thickness were produced from the mixture of Gmelina arborea sawdust and corn cob particles. The strength and dimensional stability of cement bonded composites produced from these two mixtures were examined. A total of thirty experimental boards were produced at density level of 1,000 kg/㎥ with cement to fibre ratio of 2.5:1 and 3:1 and five (5) blending proportions of G. arborea sawdust to corn cob particles of 100:0; 75:25; 50:50; 25:75 and 100:0. The effect of the cement to fibre ratio and blending proportion on the Water Absorption (WA), Thickness Swelling (TS), Modulus of Rupture (MOR), and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) were determined. The result indicates that as the mixing ratio of cement to fibre and blending proportion of maize cob (75%) to G. arborea (25%) increased, the thickness swelling, water absorption decreased, whereas the MOR and MOE increased. It also shows that most dimensionally stable and flexural strength boards were produced at the highest level of mixing ratios (3:1) and blending proportion of G. arborea to corn cob 25:75. However, the analysis of variance shows that TS and WA were significantly different, whereas, MOE and MOR were not significantly affected by mixing ratios and blending proportions. Finding of this study has shown that maize cob particles are suitable for cement bonded board production.

  • The residual stresses in the interface region of the Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC)/Thermally Grown Oxide (TGO)/Bond Coat (BC) were calculated on the TBC-coated superalloy samples using a Finite Element Method (FEM). It was found that the stress distribution of the interface boundary was dependent upon mainly the geometrical shape or its aspect ratio and the thickness of TGO layer, which was formed by growth and swelling behavior of oxide layer. Maximum compressive residual stress in the TBC/TGO interface is higher than that of the TGO/bond coat interface, and the tensile stress had nothing to do with change of an aspect ratio. The compressive residual stresses in the TBC/TGO and TGO/bond coat interface region increased gradually with the TGO growth.

  • In wood-based composite panels, low-molar ratio (LMR) urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins usually result in reduced formaldehyde emission (FE) at the expense of poor adhesion. However, the FE and adhesion of medium-density fiberboard (MDF) bonded with LMR UF resins were both improved in this study. The modified LMR UF resins with transition metal ion-modified bentonite (TMI-BNT) nanoclay simultaneously improved the FE and adhesion of MDF panels. The modified LMR UF resins with 5% TMI-BNT resulted in a 37.1% FE reduction and 102.6% increase in the internal bonding (IB) strength of MDF panels. Furthermore, thickness swelling and water absorption also significantly decreased to 13.0% and 24.9%, respectively. These results imply that TMI-BNT modification of LMR UF resins could enhance the formation of a three-dimensional network rather than crystalline domains, resulting in improved cohesion.

  • Physicochemical properties of 4 kinds of domestic and 7 kinds of foreign starch vermicelli (1 from Chinese, 6 from Japan) were determined. Peak temperature of starch vermicelli measured by DSC were $42{\sim}48^{\circ}C$ which were much lower than gelatinization temperatures of their raw material starches. X-ray diffraction peaks of starch vermicelli were not sharp compared with those of raw material starches which indicated that starches were gelatinized by heating and retrograded by cooling and freezing during production of starch vermicelli. Hardness and compression slope of sweet potato starch vermicelli measured by rheometer were respectively $9,500{\sim}11,000\;g/cm^2$ and $18,000{\sim}26,000\;g/cm^2$ which were twice higher than those of corn starch vermicelli. Cooking loss of corn starch vermicelli, which was 19.8%, was higher than that of sweet potato starch vermicelli, $4.2{\sim}6.6%$ and mung bean starch vermicelli, 7.7%. In changes of thickness of starch vermicelli during cooking i.e swelling ratio, sweet potato starch vermicelli had $58{\sim}69%$ of swelling ratio, which was higher than that of corn starch vermicelli, 50%. Corn starch vermicelli, which was relatively less elastic and easily broken, was shown to be inferior to that of sweet potato starch vermicelli in overall quality.

  • In this study, the environmentally friendly material charcoal was added to ricehusk, an agricultural by-product, and sawdust, which emerges during the sawing process, to produce board by mixing ratio and concentration levels of ricehusk and charcoal; it then investigated its physical properties for development purposes and achieved the following results. The water absorption and thickness swelling of the compounded board produced per adding ratio of ricehusk and charcoal showed a gradually decreasing tendency along with the increase in adding ratio of the charcoal, and as the density of the compounded board increased, the water absorption decreased, while the thickness swelling increased. The internal bond strength of the compounded board had indicated its highest value of 0.49N/㎟ at the density of 0.7g/㎤. This satisfied the quality standard for KSF 3104 Particleboard. The internal bond strength of the compounded board manufactured per adding ratio of ricehusk and charcoal showed a steady decrease with the decrease in the adding ratio of ricehusk, and an increase in the addingratio of the charcoal. Also, in cases when the ratio of the ricehusk and charcoal by KSF 3104 quality standard were 35:5 and 30:10, it satisfied the quality standard of 15.0-type, whereas it satisfied the 13.0-type quality standard if the ratios were 25:15 and 20:20. It showed a tendency of increasing hardness of the compounded board with the increase in density, and decreasing hardness with the increase in the adding ratio of the charcoal.

  • Styrene-butadiene Rubber (SBR) Latex composites, incorporated with cellulose/starch-silica hybrids synthesized by gel-adsorption method, were filled into rubber by the latex compounding method. The structure morphology, mechanical properties, and thermodynamic properties of gel-silica hybrids were characterized. The states of hybrids which used as fillers were also characterized by SEM. As the fillers ratio increased, the difference for storage modulus of samples had been morphology by rubber process analyzer (RPA). Then, as more fillers ratio was filled into the matrix, the best tensile strength result, and the largest modulus value were also proved by UTM and RPA. As for thermal stability, increase in the ratio of fillers led to higher initial decomposition temperature, which was also proved by TGA. The swelling ratio of samples has also been characterized. From the results of all the tests, cellulose-silica hybrid showed the best results as a filler, and the best filling ratio of this hybrid is about 10 phr, which has the best storage modulus and great tensile strength.

  • Copolymers of gelatin and poly (vinyl alcohol), (PVA) grafted by acrylic acid (AAc) with excellent water absorption and retention abilities under neutral conditions were successfully synthesized using $^{60}Co$ gamma radiations in presence of ammonium persulphate (APS), as water soluble initiator and sodium bicarbonate ($NaHCO_3$) as foaming agent. The optimum synthesis conditions pertaining to maximum swelling percentage were evaluated as a function of gelatin/PVA ratio, amount of water, concentration of APS, $NaHCO_3$, monomer concentration and total irradiation dose. Maximum percent swelling (1694.59%) of the copolymer, gelatin-co-PVA, was obtained at optimum $[APS]=2.92{\times}10^{-1}mol/L$, $[NaHCO_3]=7.94{\times}10^{-2}mol/L$ and 1.5 mL of water at total dose of 31.104 kGy while in case of grafted copolymer, (gelatin-co-PVA)-g-poly(AAc), maximum percent swelling (560.86%) was obtained using $8.014{\times}10^{-1}mol/L$ of AAc in 9 mL water with 31.104 kGy preirradiation dose. The pristine and grafted copolymers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning electron Microscopy (SEM), Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) methods. The copolymers loaded with an antiseptic, Povidone, were used as wound dressing materials for wounded gastrocnemius muscle of mice and the results exhibit that (gelatin-co-PVA)-g-poly (AAc) copolymer is a potent wound dressing material as compared to the copolymer.

  • Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAAm) containing polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) block and nano clay was obtained by the polymerization of NIPAAm and [3-(methacryloylamino)propyl]trimethyl ammonium montmorillonite(MAPTAC-MMT) with PDMS-macroinitiator. The polymer was characterized with FT-IR, XRD and DSC. The addition of PDMS in the polymers did not affect the value of the lower critical solution temperature(LCST) and the glass transition temperature($T_g$) of the PNIPAAm. However, the swelling ratio decreased with increasing PDMS contents. In the case of PNIPAAm containing nano clay, the content of MAPTAC-MMT did not affect swellability, but the $T_g$ of the PNIPAAm decreased with increasing nano clay contents.

  • This research was carried out to develop the Hanji(Korean paper) sludge wood particle composite utilizing the waste sludges occurring from the making process of Hanji(Korean paper). In the research, four mixing ratios of white or black sludge to wood particle(10:90, 20:80, 30:70, and 40:60), three types of the resin adhesives(PMDI, urea and phenol resin) and three levels of the densities(0.60, 0.75 and 0.90) were designed to investigate the physical properties of Hanji(Korean paper) sludge wood particle composite. The linear expansion of Hanji(Korean paper) sludge wood particle composite was not always increased, compared to control boards. For thickness swelling, PMDI-bonded composites had the lowest value, and thickness swelling of composite was generally decreased with the increase of Hanji sludge. The water absorption of white sludge wood particle composite had no tendency, hut that of black sludge wood particle composite was decreased with an increase of mixing ratio of Hanji sludge.
