  • The ability to provide quality power has become a significant issue in power systems. The main causes of poor power quality are harmonic currents, poor power factor, supply-voltage variations, etc. A technique of achieving both active current distortion compensation, power factor correction and also mitigating the supply-voltage variation (sag or swell) at the load side is presented in this paper. The operation and rating issues of the proposed Single-phase Unified Power Quality Conditioner are also highlighted. To reduce the total cost while simultaneously increasing the performance, the system is fully digitally controlled using the fixed-point TMS320F240 digital signal processor. The performances of the UPQC, which is composed by shunt and series PWM controlled-converters, have been verified on a laboratory prototype.

  • This paper deals with electromagnetic transient modelling of wind power system embedded in distribution networks. Wind power system consists of induction generator link reactor, distribution line, and controlled load unit. The introduction of embedded wind power system presents a new set of conditions to networks both with respect to power quantify needed to be transported and power quality such as sag swell, very short interruption, and flicker. This paper investigates the transient behavior of voltage, frequency, and load flow in wind driven induction generation system embedded in distribution networks.

  • Rubber compounds have high viscoelastic property. One of the viscoelastic behaviors during profile extrusion is the swelling of extrudate. In this study, die swells of rubber compounds at the capillary die have been investigated through experiment and computer simulation. Experiments and simulations have been performed using fluidity tester and commercial CFD code, Polyflow respectively. Die swells of rubber compounds in a capillary die were predicted using non-linear differential viscoelastic model, Phan-Thien-Tanner(PTT) model for various relaxation times and relaxation modes. The results of simulation were compared with the experiments. Pressure and velocity distribution, and circulation flows at the comer of capillary die have been investigated through computer simulation. It is concluded that the PTT model successfully represented the amount of the die swell of rubber compounds for various relaxation times at different modes.

  • Extensive study was carried out on Clay expansive soil. This soil was silty clay and can be classified as CH. The degree of expansion was found to range from low to medium depending on the free swell and swell pressure tests. The research investigated the effect of using cement dust on swelling potential, Atterberg Limit, linear shrinkage, and mineralogical composition of expansive soil. The results showed that the swelling potential, plasticity index, linear shrinkage, and clay minerals decrease with increasing cement dust percentage. The cement dust accumulates in huge amounts as a side product in cement factories, and the disposal of this fine dust is very difficult and poses an environmental threat.

  • Relative bow-motions of a ship in wave are investigated by using linear theory. The relative displacement is assumed to be composed of incident wave elevation, motion response, dynamic swell-up and ship wave elevation. Radiation problem is solved by distributing sources on the hull surface and wave elevation in a uniform stream is obtained by integrating Havelock's function with centerplane source distributions. Relative displacements for I.T.T.C. S7-175 model are calculated. Dynamic swell-ups make the relative displacement larger except small heading angles. Amplitudes of relative motion on weather-side are generally larger than those on lee-side. Ship wave elevations in a uniform stream also give considerable contributions and our calculations are verified to be reasonable in comparison with experimental results.

  • A Fuzzy Logic Controller for handing the swell/shrink problems of nuclear steam generators is designed, implemented and tested on the compact nuclear simulator at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute. Its performance is found to be better than of the PI controller originally being used. In terms of the total variations for the control actions and for the flow error curve, the ones by the fuzzy controller are found to be less than one third of those by the PI controller.

  • This paper proposes a reactive current assignment and control strategy for a doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind-turbine generation system under generic grid voltage sag or swell conditions. The system's active and reactive power constrains during grid faults are investigated with both the grid- and rotor-side convertors (GSC and RSC) maximum ampere limits considered. To meet the latest grid codes, especially the low- and high-voltage ride-through (LVRT and HVRT) requirements, an adaptive reactive current control scheme is investigated. In addition, a torque-oscillation suppression technique is designed to reduce the mechanism stress on turbine systems caused by intensive voltage variations. Simulation and experiment studies demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control scheme to enhance the fault ride-through (FRT) capability of DFIG-based wind turbines during violent changes in grid voltage.

  • This study is introducing a new approach of ATInSAR hologram for modeling wave refraction spectra pattern. TOPSAR data with L$_{-HH}$ and C-vv bands utilized spatial variation of wave refraction. Based on the phase information in along track interferometry, and ATInSAR hologram the quantitative information such swell wave height and spectra energy have been modeled. The phase information in ATInSAR hologram images can be transferred to wave refraction The ATInSAR hologram can be used to investigate the wave refraction pattern along the coastal waters. The fringe information pattern was shown to be useful in modeling wave refaction spectra varaition. The hologram interferometry wave refraction model consists of two sub-models. The purpose of first sub-model is to determine the swell wave height by using ATInSAR. Second sub-model aims to generate the holographic interferometry from the information of two wave spectra which detected by ATInSAR technique. The azimuth cut-off variations along the fringe patterns will be estimated. As azimuth cut-off contains the wave height information which could be used the significant wave height variation in convergence and divergence zone.

  • Effects of beating and water immersion time on fiber swelling and paper properties were elucidated for the fundamental study of producing high bulk paper. Chemical pulps were beaten for various freeness and the beaten pulp was immersed in water up to 24 hours. Fiber swelling was evaluated by measuring water retention value (WRV). It was found that fiber swelling, bulk and paper strength were quickly changed at the initial stage of beating. Immersion in water did not significantly increase WRV, paper density and strength, implying that soaking in water alone could not effectively swell fiber wall. In order to swell further, hydrogen bonds between fibrils in fiber wall and hence fiber wall structure shall be broken by mechanical force during beating.
