Waste management in Jeju Province, Korea, has recently emerged as an urgent problem. The increasing waste discharge requires more landfills but, since it is an island, the available land is restricted. Accordingly, an efficient waste management urgently requires environmentally sustainable policies. In this article, the waste discharge characteristics (such as the amount of waste, its composition, etc.) of Jeju Province have been compared with those in the rest of Korea. The current industrial waste management of two cities on the Island, Jeju City and Seogwipo City, has been also analyzed to suggest policies for an efficient management. The local government's endeavor to enhance environmental awareness of the community has been known to reduce the private cost of policy compliance, and have individuals recognize the results of their policy compliance. Policies to achieve the above are then proposed.

Nowadays, agro-firms are confronted with competition from global suppliers in both domestic and export markets. Such competition in sustainable agro-operations is expected to intensify. The survival of these firms in developing countries urgently requires a significant transformation to be competitive. This paper discusses the rationale of adopting a national innovation (NI) approach from an industry-wide perspective. In order to attain sustainable agro-operations in developing countries, the approach stresses appropriate scientific and technological applications and effective linkages of technology transfer via the network between public and private institutions, universities and other research institutions. Central to this approach is the development of the agro-industrial sector whereby agri-chains are formed. An illustrated case of the NI approach is presented with respect to a small island developing state, the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
The object of this study is the introduction and the application of Ecological Footprint(EF) for sustainability of regional people activities. It is a tool for the evaluation of specific projects through various lifestyles or consumption to area of broad policy and budgets. But in Korea there is no assessment for consumption level of human activities by EF. Therefore this study try to analyse ecologically productive land for human activities of Cheju-island in order to assess the sustainability in Cheju and compares with another industrized countries. We analyze the human activities level of Cheju-island then the EF is about 0.9(ha/cap). This value is not more than another countries like Canada and United States. EF assists in choosing technologies, policies and Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) which can perform a certain task with the smallest ecological footprint. It will help society to avoid collapse and move towards sustainability and ecological efficiency.

This study aimed to provide data for establishment of resource management system of Iriomote Island in Okinawa Japan. Nature resource management system of Iriomote Island can be categorized into eight stages which are equivalent to regional development stages. 1) Networking among local people, tourists, researchers, tour operators and government authorities enhanced collection of resource data. 2) On the early stage, resource data were available only to researchers and government authorities. From the third stage of this system, however, local people were also involved in resource investigation, so they became to well recognize the values of their local resources. 3) On the sixth stage, data on unfamiliar local resources and attractions became to be known to people by real-time data collection and data provision services. The tourist number gradually increased and their visitation patterns were dispersed into different sites and seasons. In addition, some tourists also participated in resource investigation and they were likely to visit the place again. 4) To achieve successful ecotourism development, it is necessary to establish a management system with a feed-back process to identify, evaluate, use and protect the resources.
Jeju Island is seeking reliable ways to secure alternative water resources using rainwater in order to conserve and manage its groundwater as sustainable water resources. The purpose of this study is to investigate the rainwater storage capability of small-size storage facilities installed at farmhouses in Uigwi and Wimi of Namwon-eup region. The rainwater outflows from the storage facilities in rain events were analyzed. The appropriate size of rainwater utilizing facilities are suggested to be about 5,800 ㎥ in Uigwi area and 4,900 ㎥ in Wimi area based on the calculation from the rainfall frequency and runoff amounts. If those facilities are put into operation in Uigwi and Wimi area, it is estimated approximately 32.3 and 11.5% of total agricultural water can be supplied by the facilities. Wimi area showed low rainwater usage because of less number of facilities relative to the size of farm areas and less intensive underground water usage. It is analyzed that more than 55% of agricultural water can be supplied by rainwater if 70 facilities without the rainwater facilities are connected to the rainwater utilizing facilities.

This study aims to suggest the values and utilization measures of the stone walls in Jeju Island as place assets. The discussion on this subject may serve as a breakthrough to resolve the current situation where the stone walls in Jeju Island have been focused on for their potential value not for their practical value as place assets. Moreover, specific measures to utilize Jeju stone walls may become a vehicle to seek the sustainable development of the region. This study discussed the types, functions and values of the stone walls in Jeju Island as place assets and suggested practical measures to use the structures based on their regional distribution. The in-depth discussions largely concluded that there might be five values and seven utilization measures with regard to the Jeju stone walls. The results of the study are expected to be utilized as a new indicator for the regional development of Jeju Island.
This study classifies the types of spatio-functional differentiation in Korean island areas and analyses typical characters and suggests the development directions by each type. Eup/Myeon-level island areas are classified as six types by the factor analysis and the cluster analysis. First type is the traditional rural center. This type puts emphasis on maintaining phase as the central space and has to maximize development potential of the whole of settlement zone. Second type is the specialized region in manufacturing industry and the qualitative mutual growth of regional industries is able to be suggested. Third type is the specialized region in the neighborhood service provision. This type needs to devise the plan for utilizing potential customers actively and developing into the region specialized in tourism industry. Fourth type is the specialized region in tourism-support service functions. This type has to promote differentiated policies for maintaining amenity infra or value of countryside capital and preservation and utilization of resources by regional features. Fifth type is the fishing industry-dominated region. This type has to promote sustainable fishery development through the policy reflecting regional features and condition. Finally, sixth type is the sluggish region dominated with the traditional agriculture and fishery. This type is needed to aim at developing into the new food production base having the advantage of clean environment by strengthening support in specialized agro-fishery products. The existing researches on spatio-functional differentiation were mostly discussed with respect to land development, but this study highlights the difference in deal with the island areas distinguished from the condition of industry.
A variety of geophysical well loggings have been conducted to investigate the geological characteristics for basaltic volcanic area in Jeju Island. Specially, there is no precedent case study using geophysical well loggings in Jeju Island. And so, the proper understandings for geological features of Jeju Island are the key to interpret geophysical well logs. Presently, seawater intrusion monitoring systems have been constructed for systematic development and conservation of groundwater resources. As the results of geophysical well loggings in this seawater intrusion monitoring boreholes, the responses of well logs for saturated zone have distinctly identified basalt sequences. In particular, neutron logging, gamma-gamma (density) logging, and resistivity logging have well exhibited the characteristics of lava flows and lithologic boundaries. In hyalocastite, porosity is high, and resistivity is low. Eventually, geophysical well logs are useful for securing sustainable development of groundwater in Jeju Island in that it has identified the characteristics of geological responses.

As a series of basic research to draw the pilot design measures for developing the habitat apparatus of Sulculus diversicolor supertexta inhabiting the coastal area of Jeju island, this study conducted a water tank experiment to understand the habitat marine environment of Sulculus diversicolor supertexta and the preference of habitat space focusing on the research fisheries performing the discharge of marine products. In the composition degree of marine algae in both fisheries, Donggwi-ri showed the highest gulfweed (79.3%) as brown algae and there were some coralline algae (17.2%) as red algae. Hansu-ri yielded the highest gulfweed (48.1%) as brown algae, which was followed by sea lettuce (10.4%) as green algae. In the preference of habitat space, the shelter angles 40° showed the highest adhesion as number of 82.9, which was followed by 60° and 70° as 69.2 and 68.2 respectively (P<0.05) by reviewing the environmental characteristics of habit of Salculus diversicolor supertexta in the coastal fishery of Jeju Island, when considering the adhesion rate in each of five shelters with different angles. In the future, there should be continuous research and monitoring for designing the fish shelters suitable for the coastal fisheries of Jeju island, and it would be also necessary to add the field-centered sustainable concrete research.

For sustainable use of the resources of uninhabited islands of Korea, their ecological economic potential needs to be fully integrated into their management policy and the carrying capacity of the islands should be evaluated before using or developing them. The emergy methodology was used to evaluate the ecological economic value and carrying capacity of Sungap-do which is an uninhabited island in Incheon, Korea. The system boundary for the emergy evaluation of the island included the sea area within 1km from the high tide level, following the management boundary for the uninhabited islands of Korea stipulated in the Law on the Conservation and Management of Uninhabited Islands. The total renewable emergy input to Sungap-do was $1.04{\times}10^{20}$ sej/yr from tidal energy. The annual ecological economic contribution of the island was evaluated high at 29.9 billion Em₩/yr. If Sungap-do were developed to the national average, its carrying capacity was 6,586 persons at the current living standard of Korea. The carrying capacity of Sungap-do for the long-term sustainability scenario was 2,337 persons at the same living standard as in the developed scenario. When only emergy contribution of the land area was considered, the carrying capacity of Sungap-do sharply decreased to 14 persons for the developed scenario and 5 persons for the long-term sustainability scenario. The carrying capacity of the uninhabited islands of Korea including Sungap-do, thus, needs to be considered from the initial stage of utilization or development projects to sustain the ecosystem benefits and their sustainable uses.
