This study aimed at finding directions for Korean agriculture to establish a new paradigm of sustainable development. Various problematic issues and concerns in the environment necessitate the transformation of Korea's development paradigm from unconditional growth to "Green Growth" through new policies on green value and review of various advanced researches. In this research, the environment-friendly agriculture's problems, particularly in agribusiness were analyzed. Drawing from Michael Porter's Value Chain Analysis, this research developed a value chain model in agriculture that reflects the environment and the present situations. Future directions in the agriculture sector were also discussed. Korea realized food self-sufficiency through the green revolution in the early 1970s. However, a lot of problems have also occurred, including ground and water pollution and the destruction of ecosystems as a result of the overuse of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. In the late 1970s, the growing interest on environment-friendly agriculture led to the introduction of sustainable methods and techniques. Unfortunately however, these were not innovative enough to foster environment-friendly agriculture. Thereafter, the consumers' distrust on agricultural products has worsened and concerns about health have increased. In view of this, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries introduced in December 1993 a system of Quality-Certified Products for organic and pesticide-free agri-foods. Although a fundamental step toward the sustainability of the global environment, this system was not enough to promote environment-friendly agriculture. In 2008, Korea's vision is for "Low Carbon Green Growth" to move forward while also coping with climate change. But primary sectors in a typical value chain do not consider the green value of their operations nor look at production from an environmental perspective. In order to attain sustainable development, there is a need to use less resources and energy than what is presently used in Korean agricultural and value production. The typical value chain should be transformed into a "closed-loop" such that the beginning and the end of the chain are linked together. Such structure allows the flow of materials, products and even wastes among participants in the chain in a sustained cycle. This may result in a zero-waste sustainable production without destroying the ecosystem.

The purpose of this study was to explore practical methods of practical arts education for sustainable development in agriculture technology. To archive this purpose, a case-study involving the specialized 'P school' was undertaken. Results of the study were as follows: First, this study estimated value to not only the concept of environmental-friendly agriculture, but also integrated social, disciplinary, generation, intra-generation, and economic perspectives. Second, elementary school students suggested plans for practical activities featuring which was all-rounded growth in circulating between education and the nature of the life. This study concludes that educational programs based on the integration of agriculture, technology, and education, as well as hands-on activities are most effective.
The problems caused by synthetic pesticides have led the need for effective biodegradable pesticides with greater selectivity. Botanical pesticides are generally recognized as safe in agriculture systems. Thus, they have been regarded as attractive alternatives to synthetic chemical pesticides for the pest management. Both lower efficacy and higher costs of production make botanicals more expensive to use than conventional pesticides. Moreover, only a small portion of plant-derived metabolites among a number of bioactive metabolites are in use because commercialization of botanicals is inhibited by several problems such as toxicity, or high production cost. However, with the growing acceptance of botanical pesticides as an efficient crop protection alternative resulting in increasing demand, plant-based pesticides will play a significant role in achieving sustainable agriculture in future.
The Purpose of this paper is to suggest sustainable strategies of the project for developing large-scale environment-friendly agricultural districts (LSEAD). This study used assessment 3 indicators, efficiency, impact and sustainability of environment-friendly agricultural certification area and farmers, management situations of crop-livestock circulation center, educations for environment-friendly farming, changes of farmer's income and so on. This project has contributed to develop environment- friendly agriculture and model of LSEAD. And for sustainable development of LSEAD, it is necessary to renovate crop-livestock circulation centers, promote organic farming of resource-circulation type, converse to non-pesticide or organic farming of low pesticide one, do active marketing activities, establish a governance system of business projects and so forth.
There are found rare specific alternatives for sustainable rural development although sustainable development has become popular common concept in international development arena. Korea is trying to reform rural development by introducing a block grants system since 2009 expecting for the efficiency of development investment. However, it seems that such new rural development system is far from realizing the sustainable development. The objectives of the study are to identify the roles and issues of the sustainable development policy and to suggest a policy model for realizing sustainable rural development. Based on the policy model hypothetically established, some policy alternatives were suggested: (i) the establishment of land use system considering sustainability perspectives; (ii) the preparation of environment management measures considering topographical traits; (iii) the improvement of landscape support scheme toward increasing biodiversity; (iv) the systematic implementation of agriculture-environment measures; (v) the implementation of sustainable development projects linking production to housing; (vi) the inclusion of sustainability indicators in rural development evaluation system.
The effect of solution temperature and nitrogen form on cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) growth, photosynthesis and nitrogen metabolism was investigated in hydroponic culture. Cucumber plants were grown for 35 days in a greenhouse at three constant solution temperatures ($15^{\circ}C$, $20^{\circ}C$, and $25^{\circ}C$) within a natural aerial temperature ($15-30^{\circ}C$). Four nitrate:ammonium ($NO{_3}^-:NH{_4}^+$) ratios (10:0, 8:2, 5:5, and 2:8 $mmol{\cdot}L^{-1}$) at constant nitrogen (N) concentration of $10mmol{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were applied within each solution temperature treatment. Results showed an increasing solution temperature enhanced plant growth (height, dry weight, and leaf area) in most N treatments. Dry weight accumulation was greatest at the 10:0 $NO{_3}^-:NH{_4}^+$ ratio in the $15^{\circ}C$ solution, the 5:5 ratio in the $20^{\circ}C$ solution and the 8:2 ratio in the $25^{\circ}C$ solution. Photosynthetic rate (Pn) response to solution temperature and $NO{_3}^-:NH{_4}^+$ ratio was similar to that of plant growth. Probably, the photosynthate shortage played a role in the reduced biomass formation. Increasing solution temperature enhanced the nitrate reductase (NR) activity, and further reduced shoots nitrate content. Our results indicate that the optimal ratio of nitrate to ammonium that promotes growth in hydroponic cucumber varies with solution temperature.

Citrus melanose, caused by Diaporthe citri, has been one of the serious diseases, and chemical fungicides were used for protection in many citrus orchards of Jeju Island. Establishing a disinfectant resistance management system and reducing pesticide usage would be important for contributing to safe agricultural production. In this study, monitoring of chemical resistance was performed with 40 representative D. citri isolates from many citrus orchards in Jeju Island. Four different fungicides, kresoxim-methyl, benomyl, fluazinam, and prochloraz manganese, with seven different concentrations were tested in vitro by growing the mycelium of the fungal isolates on the artificial medium potato dextrose agar. Among the 40 fungal isolates, 12 isolates were investigated as resistant to kresoxim-methyl which could not inhibit the mycelium growth to more than 50%. Especially isolate NEL21-2 was also resistant against benomyl, whose hyphae grew well even on the highest chemical concentration. However, any chemical resistance of fungal isolates was found against neither fluazinam nor prochloraz manganese. On the other hand, in vivo bio-testing of some resistant isolates was performed against both kresoxim-methyl and benomyl on young citrus leaves. Typical melanose symptoms developed on the citrus leaves pre-treated with both agrochemicals after inoculation with the resistant isolates. However, no or less symptoms were observed when the susceptible isolates were inoculated. Based on these results, it was suggested that some resistant isolates of D. citri occurred against both systemic fungicides, which may be valuable to build a strategy for protecting citrus disease.

Sustainable agriculture is a potential strategy to enable agricultural cultivation systems to feed the growing population under climate change. Sustainable agriculture consists of environment-friendly farming methods that allow the production of crops with minimal harm to the ecosystem. Early establishment in rice might be helpful to adopt sustainable agriculture with less inputs, such as water and phosphorus fertilizer. Two QTLs conferring tolerance to abiotic stress and low nutrition condition, DTY4.1 and Pup1, respectively, are effective for good establishment in the early growth stage under low water and phosphorus fertilizer application. We developed 'Sechanmi' and 'MSI 1-DTY' harboring Pup1 and DTY4.1 into MS11, a japonica rice variety adaptable to tropical regions, using Marker-Assisted Backcrossing (MABC). MS 11-PD lines were developed to meet the demand for less water and P fertilizer application throughout the growth stage of rice. In the F5 generation, water-saving or rainfed cultivation was performed in different P (phosphorus) content. Irrigation was applied only when severe drought was observed one month after transplanting. There was no significant difference observed between the parents and MS11-PD lines in low P conditions. However, MS11-PD lines had more tillers in P-supplied conditions compared to that of the parents 40 and 50 days after transplanting. Under the same amount of P, MS11-PD lines might have higher phosphorus uptake capacity than the parents, increasing the number of tillers and showing better early establishment. The better vegetative growth stage is one of the factors that can potentially increase production by way of higher number of panicles. Through this breeding strategy, it is possible to attain sustainable agriculture by applying less P and water to address the need of a growing population.

Objective: This study evaluated the growth, digestibility and rumen fermentation between goats and sheep fed a fattening diet fortified with linseed oil. Methods: Twelve 3 to 4 months old male goats and sheep were randomly allocated into two dietary treatment groups in a $2(species){\times}2$ (oil levels) factorial experiment. The treatments were: i) goats fed basal diet, ii) goats fed oil-supplemented diet, iii) sheep fed basal diet, and iv) sheep fed oil-supplemented diet. Each treatment group consisted of six animals. Animals in the basal diet group were fed with 30% alfalfa hay and 70% concentrates at a rate equivalent to 4% of their body weight. For the oil treatment group, linseed oil was added at 4% level (w:w) to the concentrate portion of the basal diet. Growth performance of the animals was determined fortnightly. Digestibility study was conducted during the final week of the feeding trial before the animals were slaughtered to obtain rumen fluid for rumen fermentation characteristics study. Results: Sheep had higher (p<0.01) average daily weight gain (ADG) and better feed conversion ratio (FCR) than goats. Oil supplementation did not affect rumen fermentation in both species and improved ADG by about 29% and FCR by about 18% in both goats and sheep. The above enhancement is consistent with the higher dry matter and energy digestibility (p<0.05), as well as organic matter and neutral detergent fiber digestibility (p<0.01) in animals fed oil- supplemented diet. Sheep had higher total volatile fatty acid production and acetic acid proportion compared to goat. Conclusion: The findings of this study suggested that sheep performed better than goats when fed a fattening diet and oil supplementation at the inclusion rate of 4% provides a viable option to significantly enhance growth performance and FCR in fattening sheep and goats.

Over the last three decades, Korean farming system has been directed to maximum agricultural production and to increase farmer's income through adoption of high-yielding crop varieties and high input of agrochemicals . These farming practices have resulted in problems of water-quality deterioration, soil degradation , and food safety. At present, over 40 million tones of animal waste are bing produced annually, which amounts to disposing the waste at the annual rate of 20 tones per ha in the total area of farming land in Korea. Nearly a half of total available water resources is used as irrigation water predominantly for rice paddy field. Thus, non-point source contamination of the water resources has been linked to agriculture across the nation. However, the extent to which agriculture contributes to the water quality is not fully known. Recently, Korean government provided various institutional measures to reduce the negative impacts of agricultural practices on the environ ental quality, and the Agricultural Environment Act was also passed by the legislature in 1998 and became effective January 1999. This Act does not cover the broad spectrum of the sustainable agriculture ; thus, the limited incentives within this Act are arguably ineffective to control the non-point source pollution. Recently new bulk blending of fertilizers(BB fertilizer) are bing produced (100, 000 tones in 1998) with Government subsidies. The BB fertilizers are to balance N-P-K ratio in the soils . Although the use of the BB fertilizers are encouraged with Government subsidies, non-point source pollution is still serious and will become worse. Precision farming is regarded as a new means for sustainable agriculture. It is a new technology that modifies the existing techniques and incorporates new one such as GIS, GPS , differential applicator to produce a new set of tools for the farmer to use. Precision farming, however, has constraints for individual farming practices. For exam le , farm size or parcel unit of each farmer is too small to adopt the precision agriculture on farmhouse-hold bases and farmer's ability to adopt the new technology is limited. However, it would be appropriate to establish local or regional cooperatives to operate such a precision farming system. It is recommended that Government provide sufficient incentives to help establish local and/or regional cooperatives.
