  • The effects of blanching, homogenization and heat sterilization on the stability of soymilk suspension were investigated by determination of nitrogen solubility index(NSI) of suspension and measuring the volume of precipitates and cream separated. The results obtained were that the NSI was decreased as the blanching temperature increased from $50^{\circ}C\;to\;80^{\circ}C$. The soybean particles having $8{\mu}$ by grinding showed more stable soymilk than that of $53{\mu}$. The stability was increased as the homogenizing pressure increased to $200kg/cm^2$ and repeated homogenizing process gave more stability than single one. The sterilization resulted a significant decrease in stability as it was heated at $120^{\circ}C-125^{\circ}C$ for more than 30 minutes.

  • This paper proposes a method to determine the initial equilibrium state of cable members for preliminary analysis of multi-span suspension bridge under dead load. The proposed method is simpler and more practical than the previous methods used in other studies. The proposed method can be applied to three-span or multi-span suspension bridges. To verify the proposed method, an three-span model as well as four-span models such as New Millenium Bridge in Korea and Yingwuzhou Bridge in China are analyzed. In the verification results, the initial coordinates and tensions of the members calculated by the proposed method are good agreement with those in the previous study for the three-span model and those in the design data of New Millenium Bridge. In addition, the proposed method gives the initial values to keep the initial configuration of Yingwuzhou Bridge.

  • Suspension bridge cables made of high strength steel wires require periodical maintenance in accordance with the axial force of cable-band bolts, since the bolts in suspension bridges can undergo tension decrease due to creep of cable wires, bolt relaxation, load fluctuation, and cable re-arrangement, etc. Consequently, this study is aimed at investigating and subsequently evaluating the critical factors with respect to the bolt tension-decrease phenomenon in SR suspension bridge in Korea, based on field monitoring, theoretical studies, and field record management works. From the observation, it is interesting to note that the decrease in the bolt tension force is typically accompanied by plastic deformation of the zinc plating layers in the cable wires. In addition, a framework corresponding to generic methodologies to characterize the deformation in terms of the bolt tension-decrease and long-term history management has been developed in this exploratory study.

  • Inclusion complexes of piroxicam with $\alpha,\;\beta\;and\;\gamma- cyclodextrins$ were prepared and suspended to enhance the bioavailability of piroxicam. A quantitative analysis was employed HPLC for the determination of piroxicam in the rabbit serum after a single oral dose in suspension of piroxicam and each of inclusion complexes of piroxicam with $\alpha,\;\beta\;and\;\gamma- cyclodextrins$, respectively. The bioavailability and serum level of piroxicam exhibited the highest in piroxicam clathrated $\beta-cyclodextrin$ than both piroxicam and the other complexes administered. and the total area under the curve of serum concentration versus time for their inclusion complexes were larger than that of piroxicam.

  • Embryogenic cell suspension cultures of B. striata were established as transferred selected embryogenic callus into liquid medium. Protoplasts isolated from embryogenic cell suspensions were electroporated in buffered solutions containing plasmid DNA of pBI121. Transient GUS (beta-glucuronidase) activity measurement and selection for kanamycin resistent showed that expression of foreign genes and stable transformation were achieved. GUS transient gene expression was increased by increasing DNA concentration of pBI121 plasmid and affected by the level of the applied voltage. An optimal level of GUS activity was obtained after electroporation with a pulse of 200-300 voltage/1180 uF. Protoplast viability was up to the 80% at the optimal voltage.

  • Design sensitivity analysis of a vehicle system is an essential tool for design optimization and trade-off studies. Most optimization algorithms require the derivatives of cost and constraint function with respect to design in order to calculate the next improved design. This paper presents an efficient algorithm application for the design sensitivity analysis, using the direct differentiation method. A mounting area of suspension that welded on chassis frame is analyzed to show the validity and the efficiency of the proposed method. • The rate of growth and production of bioactive substances from Rehmannia glutinosa Liboschitz (Scrophulariaceae) were studied with the variation on the constituents of the culture media. The best growth was observed from MS basal medium containing 3.0 ppm NAA and 2.0 ppm kinetin. Carbohydrates (fructose, glucose and sucrose), phytosterols(${\beta}-sitosterol$, campesterol and stigmasterol) and carotenoid like substances were identified by GC-MS and TLC from the callus mass. However, catalpol was not detected from both solid and cell suspension cultures containing geraniol. Callus cultured Rehmannia glutinosa in the MS basal medium containing 0.1 ppm NAA and 0.1 ppm kinetin become differentiated to root.

  • In the geochemical field, the chemical speciation of hexavalent uranium (U(VI)) has been widely investigated by performing measurements to determine its luminescence properties, namely the excitation, emission, and lifetime. Of these properties, the excitation has been relatively overlooked in most time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) studies. In this study, TRLFS and continuous-wave excitation-emission matrix spectroscopy are adopted to characterize the excitation properties of U(VI) surface species that interact with amorphous silica. The luminescence spectra of U(VI) measured from a silica suspension and silica sediment showed very similar spectral shapes with similar lifetime values. In contrast, the excitation spectra of U(VI) measured from these samples were significantly different. The results show that distinctive excitation maxima appeared at approximately 220 and 280 nm for the silica suspension and silica sediment, respectively.

  • Various precision engineering studies have attempted to remove mechanical friction, which causes the performance of a system to deteriorate, from precision positioning devices. Since the classical fluid lubrication method has some disadvantages in clean environments, attention has been focused on magnetic bearings and contact-free systems with their pollution-free characteristics. In this paper, f electromagnets are modeled and analyzed, not only for magnetic bearings but also for contact-free electromagnetic actuators. Three types of electromagnets that are appropriate for various applications were considered using magnetic circuitry theory. The results were experimentally validated.

  • In this study lactating female rabbits and strains of coliforms previously isolated from the cases of acute and chronic mastitis in dairy cattle were employed. The pathological changes were observed on the mastitis experimentally induced with the coliform strains and the mamary glands after infusions of E. coli suspension together with dexamethasone, dextran iron or transferrin were grossly and microscopically observed. From the results reported, the following points are concluded. In the bacterial suspension-infused groups by E. coli, K. pneumoniae and Ent. aerogenes, respectively, the affected quarters of udder showed grossly swelling, hyperemia, hemorrhage, focal necrosis and firmness. The microscopic findings of early stage of the mastitis were appearance of large numbers of heterophils in the glandular lumina and ducts accompanied by degeneration, necrosis and desquamation of epithelial cells and also infiltration of heterophils, hemorrhage and edema in the interstitial tissue and destruction of alveoli. Later, proliferation of fibroblasts, plasma cells, lymphocytes, eosinophils and macrophages appeared in the glandular tissue and with these cells necrotic foci of glandular tissue were surrounded by highly proliferated connective tissue. In addition, granulomatous inflammatory changes could be observed in the glandular tissue from the 7th day after infusion. The difference of the inflammatory response among the groups did not recognized. In the groups infused with dexamethasone and E. coli suspension the inflammatory response was slighter at the inflammatory change with alveolar destruction and hemorrhage was more rapid and severer than E. coli alone. Also in the groups infused with dextran iron and E. coli suspension the inflammatory change was more rapid and severer than E. coli alone and the histological changes were not recognized in the groups infused with dextran iron alone. Reaction of the iron staining was diffusely strong positive within the glandular alveolar lumina in the groups of dextran iron alone, hut was slightly positive toward epithelial cells in the groups of dextran iron and E. coli infusion. In the group infused with transferrin and E. coli suspension, the inflammatory response was tighter, but the peroxidase activity of the heterophils in the glandular lumina was more or less stronger than E. coli alone.
