  • In this paper, vehicle-bridge interaction analysis under a series of moving vehicles to simulate a lane load was performed to estimate impact factor of the main cable, hanger and girder for the selected suspension bridges with 404m and 1545m main span. Korea Bridge Design Code(Limit State Design) was selected for the live model in which KL-510 truck was modeled 6-d.o.f. vehicle and a lane load was simulated by a series of single-axle vehicles. For the 404m main span bridge, hinge-type and floating-type girders at the tower were considered to examine the impact factor according to the connection and supporting type of the girders. The parameters considered herein are the types of live load-a truck only and a truck plus lane load, eccentricity of moving vehicles, road surface roughness and vehicle speed. The road surface roughness was randomly generated based on ISO 8608 and it was applied to the truck only. The impact factors were also evaluated by using the influence line method that is commonly used in cable-supported bridges and compared with those from vehicle-bridge interaction analysis.

  • Among GPS methods, first of all, we used RTK GPS to analyze the precision of monitoring and then on the basis of it, we developed a monitoring system using RTK GPS when we measured the behavior of main tower of a suspension bridge by using RTK GPS method and IMU, which was an inertia navigation system. Comparing a deviation between observation value using IMU and RTK GPS, X axis was 1mm, Y axis 1mm and Z axis 2.21mm. It turned out that it was possible to monitor and measure structures by using RTK GPS method. Besides, in order to manage the structures and prevent their disaster, the transformed monitoring, which used dynamic RTK GPS measurement method, was applied in real time. It was verified that it could be used as transformed monitoring measurement method for massive structures.

  • Such social structures as bridges, buildings, dams and towers have been transformed by their own load or fundamental ground. They have been behaved by other external causes. These regular or irregular behaviors threaten to do their users safety. Therefore, to monitor the load of the structures or reaction shown by them could help to verify their behaviors. RTK GPS allows the use of a static base station and remote rover unit to allow for data collection within several seconds and in real time. It is useful for monitoring the behaviors of massive structures like bridges. In this Study, Among GPS methods, we used RTK GPS to analyze the precision of monitoring and then on the basis of it, we developed a monitoring system using RTK GPS when measured the behavior of main tower of a suspension bridge by using RTK GPS. • In recent years, the type of bridge where cables such as suspension bridge and cable-stayed bridge are the main factors in the construction of long-range bridges has been soaring. The effects of cables on these structures are very large, and for structural analysis, it is necessary to study the cable and the structural changes according to the mode characteristics of the cables. In particular, cables are directly connected to camber adjustment, which conveys load effects on girders to tower, and are important components in the overall structure, and since the initial tension on the construction is compared with the tension over time, this study was conducted to help identify the condition of the bridge's aging and abnormalities. Therefore, in this study, the characteristics of the mode from the mode analysis through the impact hammer to the mass of the cable and the change in the length of the cable are analyzed.

  • A geometrically nonlinear cable finite element is presented to use in the static or dynamic modeling of offshore and onshore structures such as guyed tower, tension leg platform or mooring buoy, submarine cable, cable-stayed bridge, suspension bridge, cable roof and so on. The cable finite element is derived directly from the compatibility equations and flexibility matrix of elastic catenary cable theory for the arbitary plane loading and geome try. A general and virsatile computer program has been developed to perform the analyses of cable member itself or cable guyed or suspened structures, in which Newmark-$\beta$ method is used to obtain a time domain solution and Newton-Raphson iteration method is used to solve the nonlinear system of compatibility equations of cable and algebraic static or dynamic equations at each time step. The results from the static and dynamic analysis of a cable member by the computer program are summarized and presented.

  • It is important to take into account the thermal behavior in assessing the structural condition of bridges. An effective method of studying the temperature effect of long-span bridges is numerical simulation based on the solar radiation models. This study aims to develop a time-varying solar radiation model which can consider the real-time weather changes, such as a cloud cover. A statistical analysis of the long-term monitoring data is first performed, especially on the temperature data between the south and north anchors of the bridge, to confirm that temperature difference can be used to describe real-time weather changes. Second, a defect in the traditional solar radiation model is detected in the temperature field simulation, whereby the value of the turbidity coefficient tu is subjective and cannot be used to describe the weather changes in real-time. Therefore, a new solar radiation model with modified turbidity coefficient γ is first established on the temperature difference between the south and north anchors. Third, the temperature data of several days are selected for model validation, with the results showing that the simulated temperature distribution is in good agreement with the measured temperature, while the calculated results by the traditional model had minor errors because the turbidity coefficient tu is uncertainty. In addition, the vertical and transverse temperature gradient of a typical cross-section and the temperature distribution of the tower are also studied.

  • The structural stability as well as economical efficiency of the wind sensitive structures are strongly dependant on accurate evaluation of the design wind speed. Present study demonstrates a useful wind data obtained at the wind monitoring tower in the Kwangyang Suspension Bridge site. Moreover the Measure-Correlate-Predict (MCP) method has been applied to estimate the long-term wind data at the bridge site based on the wind data at the local weather station. The measured data indicate that the turbulent intensities and roughness exponents are strongly affected by the wind direction and surrounding topography. The new design wind speed based on MCP method is 20m/s lower than that at the original estimation, and the resulting design wind load is only 36% of the old prediction. The field measurement of wind data is recommended to ensure the economical and secure design of the wind sensitive structures because the measured wind data reveal much different from the estimated one due to local topography.

  • In Korea, the number of national facilities for which a safety inspection is mandatory is increasing, and a safer safety inspection method is needed. This study aimed to increase the efficiency of the bridge safety inspection by enabling rapid exterior inspection while securing the safety of inspectors by using drones to perform the safety inspections of bridges, which had mainly relied on visual inspections. For the research, the Youngjong Grand Bridge in Incheon was selected as a test bed and was divided into four parts: the warren truss, suspension bridge main cable, main tower, and pier. It was possible to establish a five-step standard procedure for drone safety inspections. The step-by-step contents of the standard procedure obtained as a result of this research are: Step 1, facility information collection and analysis, Step 2, analysis of vulnerable parts and drone flight planning, Step 3, drone photography and data processing, Step 4, condition evaluation by external inspection, Step 5, building of external inspection diagram and database. Therefore, if the safety inspections of civil engineering facilities including bridges are performed according to this standard procedure, it is expected that these inspection can be carried out more systematically and efficiently.
