A chemical process involves polymerization within microspheres, whereas a physical process involves the dispersion of polymer in a nonsolvent. Nano-sized monodisperse microspheres are usually prepared by chemical processes such as water-based emulsions, seed suspension polymerization, nonaqueous dispersion polymerization, and precipitation polymerizations. Polymerization was performed in a four-necked, separate-type flask equipped with a stirrer, a condenser, a nitrogen inlet, and a rubber stopper for adding the initiator with a syringe. Nitrogen was bubbled through the mixture of reagents for 1 hr. before elevating the temperature. Functional silane (3-mercaptopropyl)trimethoxysilane (MPTMS) was used for the modification of silica nanoparticles and the self-assembled monolayers obtained were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), laser scattering system (LSS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), elemental analysis (EA), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). In addition, polymer microspheres were polymerized by radical polymerization of ${\gamma}$-mercaptopropyl modified silica nanoparticles (MPSN) and acrylamide monomer via precipitation polymerization; then, their characteristics were investigated. From the elemental analysis results, it can be concluded that the conversion rate of acrylamide monomer was 93% and that polyacrylamide grafted to MPSN nanospheres via the radical precipitation polymerization with AAm in ethanol solvent. The microspheres were successfully polymerized by the 'graft from' method.
Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles, denture base resin, were synthesized by suspension polymerization through control of polymerization conditions (stabilizer concentration, co-monomer concentration, and the agitation speed) and evaluated changes in molecular weight and particle size. We also investigated their mechanical properties of compression-molded samples which were from synthesized polymer powder mixed with methyl methacrylate (MMA) solution. under the condition of volumetric ratio as 2:1(PMMA powder and MMA solution). The results shows that the mechanical properties were mainly affected by particle size over 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size) and by molecular weight under 100 ${\mu}$m (in particle size). From these results, we concluded that the most appropriate particle size of PMMA powder for heat-cured denture base resins is around 100 ${\mu}$m. and its molecular weight is around 300000 (M$\sub$n/).
The com starch was treated with propylene oxide, 1,2-epoxybutane, glycidyl methacrylate, maleic anhydride, caprolactone, respectively, in order to alter the hydrophilicity and the reactivity of starch. When the starch was not dried, poor reaction was observed except the reaction with propylene oxide or maleic anhydride. The treated starches were grafted with styrene by several different polymerization methods. Solution polymerization and redox polymerization using cerium(IV) ion show poor grafting efficiency and poor yield. Encapsulation of starch with polystyrene by suspension polymerization was difficult due to the hydrophilicity of the starch. Among the examined methods, emulsion polymerization was found to be the suitable way to graft styrene onto starch.

Poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) obtained from PVPi has the highest syndiotacticity among (PVA)s obtained via radical polymerization, and the s-diad content of PVA prepared by low temperature polymerization of vinyl pivalate (VPi)[1-5] comes to eve. 60%, Therefore, we an obtain (PVA)s with various tacticities through the copolymerization of vinyl acetate (VAc) and VPi and can examine the relation between physical properties of (PVA)s and their tacticities. Ceramic processing to fabricate 3D complex ceramic structures is crucial for structural, energy, environmental, and biomedical applications. A unique process is ceramic stereolithography, which builds ceramic green objects from CAD files from many thin liquid layers of powder in monomer, which are solidified by polymerization with a UV laser, thereby "writing" the design for each slice. This approach directly writes layers in liquid ceramic suspension and allows one to fabricate ceramic parts and products having more accurate, complex geometries and smooth surfaces. In this paper, both UV curable materials and processes are presented. We focus on the basic material principles associated with free radical polymerization and rheological behavior, cure depth and broadening of cured lines, scattering at ceramic interface and their corresponding simulation. The immediate potentials for ceramic AM to change industry fabrication are also highlighted.
A decrease in the retro-reflectivity of glass-bead-covered road paint because of a rainwater film significantly reduces the visibility of drivers at night, and has been considered as a critical cause of traffic accidents. For enhanced visibility, the microencapsulation of hydrophobically modified $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+}$,$Dy^{3+}$ phosphorescent phosphor was carried out via suspension polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA). The effects of surface modification agent and radical initiator types, loading amount of phosphorescent phosphor, and microcapsule size on the phosphor content ($W_{TGA}$) in the luminous poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules were investigated by thermogravimetric analyses (TGA). It was found that the $W_{TGA}$ value was ranged from 7 wt% to 81 wt%, which suggests suspension polymerization is suitable for the preparation of luminous microcapsules with a wide range of phosphor content. At a lower loading amount of phosphor, the $W_{TGA}$ value obviously increased as the microcapsule size decreased; however, the $W_{TGA}$ values with a higher loading amount of phosphor were less affected by the microcapsule size. The luminous microcapsules with the size range of $425{\sim}710{\mu}m$ were collected and tested as a luminous road lanes. It was found that luminance intensities of the microcapsule-coated plates remained higher than $300mcd/m^2$ for up to 100 s in darkness after 20 min of light emitting diode lamp irradiation. The results suggest that the luminous microcapsules can be a candidate for the replacement of glass beads for enhanced visibility of drivers.

We present a microcapsule manufacturing technique, which contains a polymer coated white $TiO_2$ and black particles suspension as the core material for a electrophoretic display ink, via the in-situ polymerization method using melamine? formaldehyde as a wall material. The obtained capsules have $50 {\sim} 300 {\mu}m$ of the diameter range. They show a good mechanical strength and thermal and optical property. We fabricate the microcapsules to the single layer to test the black/white electrophoretic display application.
Super water-absorbent resins were prepared by inverse suspension copolymerization of sodium acrylate, acrylamide and 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate using N, N'-methylene-bis-acrylamide as cross-linker. For the suspension copolymerization, monohexadecyl phosphate was employed as the dispersing agent, cyclohexane as the dispersing medium and potassium persulfate as the initiator. The dependence of water-absorption capacity on the amount of crosslinking agent, oil/water ratio, degree of neutralization and the composition of the copolymer were systematically investigated. Furthermore, the swelling kinetics of the super water-absorbent copolymer was carried out. The absorption of the resins is more than 1800 g/g for deionized water and 100 g/g for 0.9% NaCl solution, respectively. The copolymers showed an increased salt resistance and enhanced water retention of soil.
