Physical Characteristics of Floc Density of Suspended Fine Particles in accordance with the Cohesiveness (점착성에 따른 부유 미립자의 플럭밀도에 대한 물리적 특성)

  • This paper was examined the physical characteristics of floc density of suspended fine particles with varying cohesiveness. The analysis of floc density was performed in a small annular flume with a free water surface under different bed shear stresses and ion addition. Fine-grained silica was used as model material, as it is the main mineral components of clay that affects sedimentation. It was concluded that floc density depended on increasing the bed shear stress, the salinity and pH value. Floc density decreased with increasing the salinity in still water and floc size, whereas the opposite was true when increasing the bed shear stress. Also, it increased at pH6.8 more than at pH4.2 when increasing the bed shear stress in the range from 0.0086 to $0.0132N/m^2$.

  • Artificial heart pumps have attracted the attention of researchers around the world as an alternative to the organ used in cardiac transplantation. Conventional centrifugal pumps are no longer considered suitable for long-term application because of the possibility of occurrence of blood leakage and thrombus formation around the shaft seal. To overcome this problem posed by the shaft seal in conventional centrifugal pumps, the magnetically suspended centrifugal pump has been developed; this is a sealless rotor pump, which can provide contact-free rotation of the impeller without leading to material wear. In Europe, clinical trials of this pump have been successfully performed, and these pumps are commercially available. One of the aims of our study is to numerically examine the internal flow and the effect of leakage flow through the gap between the impeller and the pump casing on the performance of the pump. The results show that the pressure head increases compared with the pump without a gap for all flow rates because of the leakage of the fluid through the gap. It was observed that the leakage flow rate in the pump is sufficiently large; further, no stagnant fluid or dead flow regions were observed in the pump. Therefore, the present pump can efficiently enhance the washout effect.

Effect of Amino Acids on Oxygen Consumption of the Mang-Kong Frog (Gallula tornieri VOGT) Liver (맹꽁이 간의 산소소비량에 미치는 수종 아미노산의 영향)

  • The present experiment was conducted to investigate the rate of oxygen consumption in relation to the several amino acids in the Mang-Kong frog ,Gallula tornieri VOGT. 1. When the liver tissue was suspended in the Ringer's solution (0.85% NaCl), the amount of oxygen consumption per hour was 0.043$\mu$l/mg , whereas when it was suspended in M/15, pH 5.8 phosphate buffer the oxygen consumption reached 0.93$\mu$l/mg. 2. When 0.5ml of 1% alanine and 0.5ml of 0.5% arginine were used as respiratory material the amount of oxygen consumption increased remarkably, while on the other hand glycine showed little influence on the amount of oxygen consumption. 3. When 0.5ml of 0.1% , 0.5% alanine-arginine mixture, 0.5ml of 0.1% , 0.5% alanine-glycine mixture and 0.5ml of 1 % arginine-glycine were added the oxygen consumption in the liver tissue increased somewhat in comparison to the case in which single amino acid was used. 4. Glycine appeared to have influence on the respiration of the liver tissue but the amount of oxygen consumption increased as the concentration of arginine-glycine mixture increased, whereas the rate of oxygen consumption increased remarkably as alaninie-glycine mixture decreased. It was evidenced that in the combination of alanine-arginine the rate of oxygen consumption increased as the concentration of the mixture decreased and vice versa.

Selective fabrication and etching of vertically aligned Si nanowires for MEMS

  • In recent years, there is a strong requirement of low cost, stable microelectro mechanical systems (MEMS) for resonators, microswitches and sensors. Most of these devices consist of freely suspended microcantilevers, which are usually made by the etching of some sacrificial materials. Herein, we have attempted to use Si nanowires, inherited from the parent Si wafer, as a sacrificial material due to its porosity, low cost and ease of fabrication. Prior to the fabrication of the Si nanowires silver nanoparticles were continuously formed on the surface of Si wafer. Vertically aligned Si nanowires were fabricated from the parent Si wafers by aqueous chemical route at $50^{\circ}C$. Afterwards, the morphological and structural characteristics of the Si nanowires were investigated. The morphology of nanowires was strongly modulated by the resistivity of the parent wafer. The 3-step etching of nanowires in diluted KOH solution was carried out at room temperature in order to control the fast etching. A layer of $Si_3N_4$ (300 nm) was used for the selective fabrication of nanowires. Finally, a freely suspended bridge of zinc oxide (ZnO) was fabricated after the removal of nanowires from the parent wafer. At present, we believe that this technique may provide a platform for the inexpensive fabrication of futuristic MEMS.

  • Effects of temperature on the efficiency of the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket(UASB) process for treatment of wastewater from a starch and related products manufacturing industry were investigated using laboratory scale reactors equipped with two types of Gas-Solid Separator(GSS). Both fresh digested sludge and granular sludge stored nearly for one year at room temperature were good as a seeding material. The reactors seeded with aged granular sludge showed slow start-up, however, lowered activity at the initial period was recovered gradually. The GSS with an inner cylinder was proved to be effective in liquid-solid separation compared to the conventional type. Although the rate of organic removal and gas production per unit volatile suspended solids in the reactor reduced significantly as the temperature varied from 35 to $20^{\circ}C$, possibility of operation at low temperatures was shown as a result of gradual buildup of volatile suspended solids in the bed. Stable operation with a reduced efficiency was possible at a COD loading of $5-8kg/m^3/day$ at a temperature as low as $20^{\circ}C$.

  • It is common to find lots of organic and inorganic precipitates inside of industrial cooling system. Analytical instruments including ICP-AES, IC, XRD, and SEM were used to investigate the effects of application of Mg on reaction among coolant, precipitates and suspended matters within chiller system. Magnesium (Mg) has a decreasing effect on total dissolved material in the coolant suggesting a significant improvement of quality of coolant. Disappearance of most organic materials in the cooling devices also suggests an inhibitive effect on the growth of organic matters.

Ocean Color Monitoring of Coastal Environments in the Asian Waters

  • Satellite remote sensing technology for ocean observation has evolved considerably in these last twenty years. Ocean color is one of the most important parameters of ocean satellite measurements. This paper describes a remote sensing of ocean color data project - Asian I-Lac Project; it also introduces several case studies using satellite images in the Asian waters. The Asian waters are related to about 30 Asian countries, representing about 60% of the world population. The project aims at generating long-term time series images (planned for 10 years from 1996 to 2006) by combining several ocean color satellite data, i.e., ADEOS-I OCTS and SeaWiFS, and some other sensors. Some typical parameters that could be measured include Chlorophyll- a (Chl-a), Colored Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM), and Suspended Material (SSM). Reprocessed OCTS images display spatial variation of Chl-a, CDOM, and SSM in the Asian waters; a short term variability of phytoplankton blooms was observed in the Gulf of Oman in November 1996 by analyzing OCTS and NOAA sea surface temperature (SST); Chl-a concentrations derived from OCTS and SeaWiFS have also been evaluated in coastal areas of the Taiwan Strait, the Gulf of Thailand, the northeast Arabian Sea, and the Japan Sea. The data system provides scientists with capability of testing or developing ocean color algorithms, and transferring images for their research. We have also analyzed availability of OCTS images. The results demonstrate the potential of long-term time series of satellite ocean color data for research in marine biology, and ocean studies. The case studies show multiple applications of satellite images on monitoring of coastal environments in the Asian Waters.

A Study on Stimulus Response Characteristic of PBLG and PBDG (PBLG와 PBDG의 자격 응답특성에 관한 연구)

  • The displacemant current measuring system used for detecting the dynamic behavior of monolayers at the air-water interface is described. It basically consists of a film balance, a pair of electrodes connected to each other through a sensitive ammeter. Here, one electrode is suspended in air and the other electrode is placed in the water. With Maxwell-displacement-current-measuring method, the phase transitons of $Poly-{\gamma}-benzyl_{L}$ -glutamate (PBLG) and $Poly-{\gamma}-benzyl_{D}$-glutamate(PBDG) on a water surface were detected. Measured surface pressure, displacement current and dipole moment of monolayers of PBLG and PBDG on the water surface. Also, we measured that compression velocity (30, 40, 50[mm/min]) when the sample spread volume was about 370[ul]-400[ul] and displacement current that occur when differed temperature. From the result, it is known that current is generated in the range of high surface pressures as compression velocity become faster and increase of temperature.

  • This paper presents the fabrication and characteristics of microheaters, built on AlN(0.1 um)/3C-SiC(1 um) suspended membranes. Pt was used as microheater and temperature sensor materials. The results of simulated are shown that AlN/3C-SiC membrane has more large uniform-temperature area than $SiO_2$/3C-SiC membrane. Resistance of temperature sensor and power consumption of microheater were measured and calculated. Pt microheater generates the heat of about $550^{\circ}C$ at 340 mW and TCR of Pt temperature sensor is about 3188 ppm/$^{\circ}C$.
