  • Outliers in survey are a perennial problem for applied survey statisticians to estimate the total or mean of population. The influence of outliers is more increasing as they have large weights in survey sampling. Many techniques have been studied to lower the impact of outliers on sample survey estimates. Outliers can be downweighted by winsorization or reducing the weight of outliers. The weight reduction is more reasonable than replacing one outlier by one value of non-outliers, because it has at least one unit. In this paper, we suggest the square root transformation of weight as the weight reduction method. We show this method is efficient with real data, and it's also easy to apply in practical affairs.

  • Time-related underemployment exists when a person's employment is insufficient in terms of the volume of work. Two alternative definitions can be considered based on a longer-term view or a shorter-term view and these were designed into a single questionnaire. We conducted a pilot sample survey with about 6,000 respondents in Korea. The estimates of underemployment using the two definitions show some differences given the ages, genders, industrial areas and main activities of the respondents. A larger number of people could be identified as underemployed when the longer-term view is used than when the shorter-term view is used, but there is a greater cost associated with the former. The cost-benefit of the interviewers' time was investigated by multiple visits to households. Biases and costs are also analyzed using the results of the comparison of the decrease in non-responses with the increase in the costs for the interviews.

  • In this paper, we have considered the problems of the estimation of the gross areas of a factory site relating to the areas of industrial complex lands based on a statistical forecasting model and the results of a sampling survey. In respect to the data of a gross areas of a factory site, we have only the sizes from 1981-2003. In 2009, the Korea Industrial Complex Corp. conducted a sampling survey to estimate its bulk size, and investigate the demands of its sizes for the next five years. In this study, we have adopted the sampling survey results, and have created a statistical growth model for the gross areas of a factory site to improve the prediction for the areas of a factory site. The three-different parts of data: the results of areas of a factory site by Korea National Statistical Office, imputation results by the statistical forecasting model, and sampling survey results have used as the basis for analysis. The combination of the three-different parts of data has created a new forecasting value of the areas of a factory site through the spline smoothing method.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a computer software titled "Compare & Evaluation Program for Household Consumption". This software is developed in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0. For the data of this program, the family Income and Expenditure Survey(1998) produced by the National Statistical Office in Korea is used. This program compares income and consumption expenditure for each household with those for standard household according to income level and family life cycle. This program gives information and suggestion for household consumers to manage rational household consumption. Also this study investigates validity and usefulness of the software program by interviewing 20 households used this program.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore a typology of leisure participation, investigate determinants of leisure participation types, and analyze differences in life satisfaction by the types of leisure participation of the elderly. The data source for this research was the 2014 Time Use Survey conducted by the Korea National Statistical office (KNSO). The statistical methods for the analysis were mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, Duncan test, cluster analysis, and logistic regression analysis. Leisure participation were classified into five types based on five categories; social activities, religious activities, media, sports, time-spending activity. The five types were named "general", "insufficient", "religious oriented", "media oriented", and sports oriented" type. Gender, health condition were identified as important determinants for the types. Life satisfaction was different according to leisure participation type of the elderly. Religious oriented type showed the highest score of life satisfaction and media oriented type showed the lowest.

  • Survey environment has recently been changed along with its bad conditions. Surveyors feel difficult to meet respondents because the number of one person-household and working-together-household has rapidly increased. With a growing awareness of protecting personal information, respondents no longer want to response to a questionnaire. To get responses form an increasing number of non-response houses and respondents who are difficult to meet, Korea National Statistical Office(KNSO) has changed its survey methods and thus introduced new survey methods, free from face-to-face interviews. A telephone interview has officially been allowed for some reasonable situations and it shows a tendency that the trend of interviewing method is moving toward Internet survey. This paper focuses on how survey methods should be changed with the use of IT in response to changes in the survey environment. Survey methods combined with IT have many excellent advantages, Korea has been an enviable World IT contest for a long time. If Korea can apply such an advanced IT environment to survey methods successfully, it will make a great contribution toward improving the survey quality. This paper also reviews which survey method is most appropriate for National Statistics as the survey environment has changed.

  • Korea has not tried any food consumption survey so far except the national nutrition survey, which does not show food consumption patterns of different income stratas. The results of the family income and expenditure survey(FIES) by the national statistical office can be precious sources which show household food consumption patterns due to large, random. Samples, year-round survey period and socioeconomic background data. This study analyzed the FIES data to find out food consumption patterns including nutrient intakes and frequently consumed foods by households among different monthly income levels. Big difference was found in food consumption patterns among the quartile-income groups especially the amount of consumed foods, food expenditure, and nutrient intakes. For every food item, the higher the monthly invomr, yhr motr og goof yhry vondumrf. The monthly food expenditure of higher higher income strata was composed with higher percentage of relatively expensive foods compared to other stratas. Nutrient intake levels of lower income strata were 50-60% of the RDA, which showed the necessicity of food assistance programs for those high risk groups to complement the nutritional difficiency. • ASL estimation of public building is based on how appropriate the maximum age of the asset is derived based on the age record of the asset in the statistical data owned by public institutions. This is because we get a 'constrained' ASL by that number. And it is especially true because other studies have assumed that the building is an Iowa curve R3. Also, in this study, the survival rate is 1% as the threshold value at which the survival curve and the predictable life curve almost coincide. Rather than a theoretical basis, in the national statistical survey, the value of residual assets was recognized from the net value of 10% of the acquisition value when the average service life has elapsed, and 1% when doubling the average service life has elapsed. It is based on the setting mentioned above. The biggest constraint in fitting statistical data to the Iowa curve is that the maximum ASL is selected at R3 150%, and the 'constrained' ASL is calculated by the proportional expression on the assumption that the Iowa curve is followed. In like manner constraints were considered. First, the R3 disposal curve for the RCC(reinforced cement concrete) building was prepared according to the discarding method in the 2000 work, and it was jointly worked on with the National Statistical Office to secure the maximum amount of vintage data, but the lacking of sample size must be acknowledged. Even after that, the National Statistical Office and the Bank of Korea have been working on estimating the Iowa curve for each asset class in the I-O table. Another limitation is that the asset classification uses the broad classification of buildings as a subcategory. Second, if there were such assets with a lifespan of 115 years that were acquired in 1905 and disposed of in 2020, these discarded data would be omitted from this ASL calculation. Third, it is difficult to estimate the correct Iowa curve based on the stub-curve even if there is disposal data because Korea has a relatively shorter construction history, accumulated economic wealth since the 1980's. In other words, "constrained" ASL is an under-estimation of its ASL. Considering the fact that Korea was an economically developing country in the past and during rapid economic development, environmental factors such as asset accumulation and economic ability should be considered. Korea has a short period of accumulation of economic wealth, and the history of 'proper' architectures faithful to building regulations and principles is short and as a result, buildings 'not built properly' and 'proper' architectures are mixed. In this study, ASL of RCC public building was estimated at 70 years.
