  • Recently, Web-based Survey has attempted to overcome the limitations of Paper-based survey. This method is more effective in costs and time use than traditional methods, also help respondents to understand and interest in the survey. Especially for the elderly, web-based survey is effective survey tool, because audio-visual material could be provied. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of two kinds of methods which were web-based survey and paper-based survey, focused on elderly residents' needs for ubiquitous home service. The participants were older than 60 and divided into 2 groups, web-based survey and paper-based survey, each group was controlled over by age, gender, computer skill. For this study, elderly residents conducted a survey passed through 2 steps, the first was residents' needs for ubiquitous home services, the second was an evaluation of survey methods. Finding were as follows : first, there was no difference between the two groups in needs for ubiquitous home service, so survey itself can not make a difference in survey results. Second, respondents of web-based survey were more interested in and felt easier about method that they conducted than ones of paper-based survey. Finally, Web-based survey will be more effective method to be figure out the need of the elderly who are familiar with computer.

  • Recently the importance of BIM (Building Information Modeling) that enables 3D location-based design and construction work is being highlighted around the world. In Korea, the road map has been established to settle the design based on BIM using drone survey results by 2025. As the first step, BIM would be applied to road construction projects worth more than 50 billion Korean Won from 2020. On the other hand, drone survey regulation has been enacted and the data for drone survey cost were also included on Standard of construction estimate in 2020. However, more careful improvement is required to reflect drone survey results in BIM design and construction. Currently, Engineering instructions and Standard of construction estimate specifies that earthwork volume must be calculated by cross section method only. So it is required to add the method of DEM (Digital Elevation Model) based volume calculation on these regulations to realize BIM application. In order for that, this study verified the method of DEM based earthwork volume calculation. To get an accurate DEM for accurate volume computation, drone survey was carried out according to the drone survey regulation and then could get an accurate DEM data which have errors less than 3cm in X, Y and 6.8cm in H. As each DEM cell has 3D coordinate component, the volume of each cell can be calculated by obtaining the height of area of the cell then total volume is calculated by multiplying total number of cells by volume of each cell for the construction area. Verification for the new calculation method compare with existing method was carried out. The difference between DEM based volume by drone survey and cross section based volume by traditional survey was less than 1.33% and it can be seen that new DEM method will be able to be applied to BIM design and construction instead of cross section method.

  • The calibration methods of neutron-measuring devices such as the neutron survey meter have advantages and disadvantages. To compare the calibration factors obtained by the shadow cone method and semi-empirical method, 10 neutron survey meters of five different types were used in this study. This experiment was performed at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI; Daejeon, South Korea), and the calibration neutron fields were constructed using a $^{252}Californium$ ($^{252}Cf$) neutron source, which was positioned in the center of the neutron irradiation room. The neutron spectra of the calibration neutron fields were measured by a europium-activated lithium iodide scintillator in combination with KAERI's Bonner sphere system. When the shadow cone method was used, 10 single moderator-based survey meters exhibited a smaller calibration factor by as much as 3.1-9.3% than that of the semi-empirical method. This finding indicates that neutron survey meters underestimated the scattered neutrons and attenuated neutrons (i.e., the total scatter corrections). This underestimation of the calibration factor was attributed to the fact that single moderator-based survey meters have an under-ambient dose equivalent response in the thermal or thermal-dominant neutron field. As a result, when the shadow cone method is used for a single moderator-based survey meter, an additional correction and the International Organization for Standardization standard 8529-2 for room-scattered neutrons should be considered.

  • Ecological methods were reviewed through reports such as environmental impact assessment and damage effect of fishery in the Korean watershed. Survey items in marine ecological field were included: phytoplankton, zooplankton, benthic animal, algae, adult fish, egg and juvenile of fish. A standardization of survey method in the field of community ecology was suggested to consider the convenience, Sequency in Use of device, accuracy of data collected from that. It is necessary that spatial data should be sufficiently acquired toy statistical analysis of biodiversity and spatial comparison. Quantitative sampling method must be inevitably adopted based nature of biota and geographical type of the survey area. The same sampling method can make the data compared spatially but can't be applicable in all area. Standardizing survey method should be by no means under certain restriction of study and would become different according to survey environments. The first thing is minutely understanding about ecological character of biota inhabiting in certain area, and then determining survey method.

  • Among the mainstream of this society has quickly adopted computer technology as part of their daily life, the ever growing group of elderly people, which will increase from 7% of the population in 2000 to being 14% just 18 years later, has been being exposed to computer using environment more than ever before. According to the survey of Korean government in 2005, the number of the elderly using computer has been rising actually, so web-based survey to identify housing needs of the elderly seems to have lots of possibilities as a useful tool for them. This study aims at comparing web-based survey tool with paper-based one, developed to identify the elderly needs on digital home planning. Experimental method and in-depth interview were employed. The participants were divided into 2 groups, web-based and paper-based survey group. Each group was controlled over by age (average 60 years old), gender and computer skill. As a results, web-based survy tool was revealed as effective to clearer understanding and causing more interests and more available, but less easy to handle than paper-based survey one. Through the in-depth interview, web-based survey tool was identified as a more effective method to figure out the needs of the elderly who are familiar with computer.

  • This paper proposes a Web Based Online Outage Cost Assessment and Information System(WOOCAIS) for power system outage cost assessment. The proposed WOOCAIS is a kind of web based survey method for outage cost assessment. While conventional survey methods have done outage cost assessment based on survey paper lists collected by post mail or visiting customers, the proposed WOOCAIS is a web based online survey operation and assessment system. Therefore, it can curtail expenditure for survey and also is more convenient than conventional method. It will be set up for actual outage cost assessment system of KEPCO in South Korea in the near future. The WOOCAIS will be applied in various research and actual planning and operation areas. First of all, the assessed results may be not only applied as one of objective function for generation system and grid expansion but also operational planning problems in power system.

  • The design of safe and economical structures depends on the reliable live load from load survey. Live load surveys are traditionally conducted by randomly selecting rooms and weighing each item on-site, a method that has problems of low efficiency, high cost, and long cycle time. This paper proposes a deep learning-based method combined with Internet big data to perform live load surveys. The proposed survey method utilizes multi-source heterogeneous data, such as images, voice, and product identification, to obtain the live load without weighing each item through object detection, web crawler, and speech recognition. The indoor objects and face detection models are first developed based on fine-tuning the YOLOv3 algorithm to detect target objects and obtain the number of people in a room, respectively. Each detection model is evaluated using the independent testing set. Then web crawler frameworks with keyword and image retrieval are established to extract the weight information of detected objects from Internet big data. The live load in a room is derived by combining the weight and number of items and people. To verify the feasibility of the proposed survey method, a live load survey is carried out for a meeting room. The results show that, compared with the traditional method of sampling and weighing, the proposed method could perform efficient and convenient live load surveys and represents a new load research paradigm.

  • This study proposes an OMS/MP preparation methodology using a simulation method instead of a survey method. We applied our methodology to the next generation detection radar, providing reasonable peace- and war-time OMS/MP values. Based on these results, we propose the process to calculate RAM objective values. The previous survey method required to supplement its method since the method used data from a similar weapon system. In addition, the previous method didn't provide enough reliability for the future weapon system. Instead of using the previous survey method, we propose to use war game simulation, which provides a better OMS/MP values. Based on these results, we propose the logical consecutive process that prepares combat and simulation scenarios, peace- and war-time OMS/MP values and RAM objective values.

  • This study aimed to propose the method of linking satellite image-based forest fire data to supplement the limitation of forest fire survey data that records only the ignition location and area of forest fire. For this purpose, a method was derived to link the fire survey data provided by the Korea Forest Service between January 2012 and December 2019 with MODIS and VIIRS image-based forest fire data. As a result, MODIS and VIIRS-based forest fire data out of 191 wildfires in the forest fire survey data were able to identify 11% and 44% of fire damage area, respectively. An average of 56% of forest damage area was extracted from VIIRS-based forest fire data compared to forest fire areas identified by high-resolution Sentinel-2A satellites. Therefore, for large-scale forest fires, VIIRS wildfire data can be used to compensate for the limitations of forest fire survey data that records only the ignition location and area.

  • The physical components of a river, such as water surface width/river width ratio, water level, and flow velocity vary according to different flowrates. Moreover, the riverside landscapes are greatly affected by the change of physical components of the stream or river. This paper provides an analysis of the influence of changing physical components of a river on the riverside landscape using a survey-based quantification method. The questionnaire was developed based on current literature, and was submitted to 326 people who each visited a representative station along the riverside. This survey was implemented three times at each representative station during periods of different flowrates. The results of this analysis and survey have Produced an understanding of the relationship between the variation of physical components and riverside landscapes. Survey results about the flow comparison are summarized as follows. Viewing riverside landscapes, most respondents are sensitive to the change of the flow velocity and prefer high water levels to low water levels. As a whole, respondents prefer abundant stream flows and moderate flow velocity in which they can perceive the flow of water. The minimum instream flows for riverside landscapes is estimated at each representative station by using a survey-based quantification method, and the estimated results of some representative stations were greater than the mean monthly flow at each station. The result of this analysis shows that establishing minimum instream flows for riverside landscapes is not only a technical problem, but also a legal problem. Therefore, in the to establish the instream flows in a river, the estimated results have to be considered as a relative standard. Regarding the survey results, respondents' satisfaction level didn't show any clear inclination according to the variation of various hydraulic properties. In determining the minimum instream flow using such an inquiry method, the structure of riverside scenery may vary according to the change of seasons or months. Therefore, to determine a consistent general inclination about the flow rate, it is necessary to have more detailed flow rates for each season or month combined with more inquiries.
