  • Polymers are introduced to neat asphalt to prepare self-healing asphalt. The polymers are Surlyn, Nylon and polyethyleneterephtalate(PET). Since they are known as having high intermolecular force, they have high processing temperature. Therefore they are hardly introduced into the asphalt as bulk state. So in this study, they are introduced as solutions. Polymer-modified asphalts showed excellent modification effect and also healing effect. 5% polymer added asphalt showed more than 18% increased tensile strength. This tensile strength increment can be explained by polymer's intermolecular forces. Especially Surlyn interacts with asphalt molecules by hydrogen bonding and also with metals in asphalt by ionic bonding. When it comes to healing aspect the healing efficiency of Surlyn increased to 138% based on tensile strength. That of PET increased to 141% based on complex modulus and in case of Nylon it increased to 131% based on impact strength. This tells that in dealing with healing efficiency the important considering factors are not only the intermolecular forces of the polymers but also the interaction between the polymer and asphalt molecules.

  • The behavior of space charge in PE/ionomer blends has been investigated using the thermally stimulated current (TSC) technique. In the blends, at least two TSC peaks over the temperature range from -50 to 100\ulcorner are observed, one at -5 ~ 10\ulcorner (a peak) and the others at above 60\ulcorner (a peak). The a peak is assigned as the orientation of dipoles from the ionomer component. Two a peaks seem to be related to the charge trapping at sites related to the crystalline phases. One a peak is associated with the ionic interfaces and the other with the ethylene chains without the ionic interfaces. The amount of charges stored in PE/Surlyn 1652 blends increases as the poling field increases over the field range of +8 ~ +30 kV/mm, whereas that in PE/Surlyn 1601 blends increases slightly at low poling fields and then decreases at high poling fields above +10 kV/mm. Exact reasons for such a dirrerence are not known at this point.

  • With poly (ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) ionomer (i.e. Surlyn) as a compatibilizer, PP/organoclay (Cloisite(R)20A) nanocomposites were prepared via melt compounding in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder. For comparison, the widely used PP-g-MA was also used as a reference. The content of organoclay was fixed at 5phr based on the total weight of polymer resins. The structures of nanocomposites were characterized by XRD, rheometry in small amplitude oscillatory shear, SEM, and TEM, respectively. It was found that PP/Surlyn/OMMT nanocomposites displayed higher intercalation degree and better dispersion effect than the corresponding PP/PP-g-MA/OMMT counterpart. Additionally, their mechanical properties and wettability were measured.

  • DSSCs electrical characteristics and efficiency fabricated with different tape casting thickness Pt counter electrodes and different thickness between $TiO_2$ photo electrode and Pt counter electrode substrate were studied. 1 layer Pt counter electrode shows 3.979% efficiency. Efficiency increased as tape casting thickness decreased. The lowest open-circuit voltage was a 0.726 V and the highest short-circuit current was a 2.188 mA on 1 layer Pt counter electrode. On the different thickness between two substrates, the lowest open-circuit voltage 0.712 V and the highest short-circuit current 2.787 mA was measured at $60{\mu}m$ surlyn film thickness and it shows the highest value of 5.067% efficiency.

  • Na-bentonite (local clay mineral) and Na-montmorillonite were treated with quaternary alkylammonium cations. The effect of the molecular structure and functional groups of the surfactants on the organoclays was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). For the preparation of nanocomposites, organoclays were melt-blended with polypropylene in a twin screw extruder and $Surlyn^{(R)$. ionomer was used as a reactive compatibilizer. The clay dispersions in the composites were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). XRD spectra showed no peak at low angle indicated that the silicate clay layer has a nearly exfoliated dispersion in the polymer matrix. Thermal and mechanical properties of nanocomposites were higher than those of PP.

  • We have prepared polymer composites of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and ionomers (Surlyn 8940) containing polar segments and metal ions by melt blending with carbon black (CB) as a conductive filler. The resistivity and positive temperature coefficient (PTC) of the ionomer/LDPE/CB composites were investigated with respect to the CB content. The ionomer content has an effect on the resistivity and percolation threshold of the polymer composites; the percolation curve exhibits a plateau at low CB content. The PTC intensity of the crosslinked ionomer/LDPE/CB composite decreased slightly at low ionomer content, and increased significantly above a critical concentration of the ionomer. Irradiation-induced crosslinking could increase the PTC intensity and decrease the NTC effect of the polymer composites. The minimum switching current (Ι$\sub$trip/) of the polymer composites decreased with temperature; the ratio of Ι$\sub$trip/ for the ionomer/LDPE/CB composite decreased to a greater extent than that of the LDPE/CB composite. The average temperature coefficient of resistance (${\alpha}$$\sub$T/) for the polymer composites increased in the low-temperature region.

  • Sodium and zinc salts of poly(ethyaene-co-methacrylic acid) ionomers consist of three phases, i.e. ionic aggregates, amorphous, and crystalline phases. Dye molecules after soaked from the methanol solution are located near the amorphous phase or ionic aggregates within ionomer films. Depending on the location of the molecules in the ionomer film, they are under influence of dispersion forces (ethylene parts), polar forces (acid parts). and ionic dipole (ionic aggregates) interactions. The UV/Vis absorption peak of Nile Red under the dispersion force is found at near 500 nm, for the dye under the polar force effect 525 nm, and 550 and 610 nm for the dyes under $Na^+$ and $Zn^{2+}$ ionization effects, respectively. Since the divalent $Zn^{2+}$ ion has larger ionic dipole than the monovalent $Na^+$ ion, the larger red-shift of the absorption band due to the ionic dipole interaction is observed for $Zn^{2+}$ counter ion.
