  • To improve the poor mechanical and thermal properties of conventional PMMA bone cement, we impregnated three types of polyethylenes (PE) (200, 3,800, and 8,000 kg/mol). MMA/xylene solution was used to modify the surfaces of PEs and new composite PMMA bone cements were manufactured by impregnating 3 wt% of the surface-modified PEs into conventional PMMA bone cement. As molecuar weigth of PE increased, tensile strengths of the manufactured composite PMMA bone cements were improved. Also, we confirmed that the curing temperatures of the composite PMMA bone cements decreased from near $100^{\circ}C$ to $40^{\circ}C{\sim}80^{\circ}C$.

  • Basic design concept of the future steel structure requires environmental compatibility and maintenance free capability to minimize economic burdens. Recent trends in alloy design for advanced weathering steel include addition of various alloying elements which can enhance formation of stable and protective rust layer even in polluted urban and/or high $Cl^{-}$ environment. The effects of Ca, Ni, W, and Mo addition on the corrosion property of Ca-modified weathering steel were evaluated through a series of electrochemical tests (pH measurement and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy: EIS) and structural analysis on rust layer formed on the steel surface. Ca-containing inclusions of Ca-Al-Mn-O-S compound are formed if the amount of Ca addition is over 25 ppm. Steels with higher Ca content results in higher pH value for condensed water film formed on the steel surface, however, addition of Ni, W, and Mo does not affect pH value of the thin water film. The steels containing a high amount of Ca, Ni, W and Mo showed a dense and compact rust layer with enhanced amount of ${\alpha}-FeOOH$. Addition of Ni, W and Mo in Ca-modified weathering steel shows anion-selectivity and contributes to lower the permeability of $Cl^{-}$ ions. Effect of each alloying element on the formation of protective rust layer will be discussed in detail with respect to corrosion resistance.

  • Recently, much of the current development in surface modification engineering are focused on multilayered coatings. Multilayered coatings have the potential to improve the tribological properties. Four different multilayered coatings were deposited on AISI D2 steel. The prepared samples are designed as $WC-Ti_{0.6}Al_{0.4}N$, $WC-Ti_{0.53}Al_{0.47}N$, $WC-Ti_{0.5}Al_{0.5}N$ and $WC-Ti_{0.43}Al_{0.57}N$. The multilayered coatings were investigated with respect to coating surface and cross-sectional morphology, roughness, adhesion, hardness, porosity and tribological behavior. Especially, wear tests of four multilayered coatings were performed by using a ball-on-disc configuration with a linear sliding speed of 0.017 m/sec, 5.38 N load. The tests were carried out at room temperature in air by employing AISI 52100 steel ball ($H_R=66$) having a diameter of 10 mm. The surface morphology, and topography of the wear scars of samples and balls have been determined by using scanning electron spectroscopy (SEM). Results have showed an improved wear resistance of the $WC-Ti_{1-x}Al_xN$ coatings with increasing of Al concentration. $WC-Ti_{0.43}Al_{0.57}N$ coating with the lower surface roughness and porosity with good adhesion enhanced wear resistance.

  • Some of factors affecting photo-conversion efficiency of dye sensitized solar cells (DSCs) are discussed in terms of $TiO_2$ electrodes. The first topic is on the surface modification of $TiO_2$ nano-particles, which is associated with electron traps on the surface of $TiO_2$ nano-particles. The surface is modified with dye molecules under pressurized $CO_2$ atmosphere to increase the surface coverage of $TiO_2$ nano-particles with dye molecules. This increases Jsc because of an increase in the amount of dye molecules and a decrease in the amount of trapping sites on $TiO_2$ nano-particles. In addition, the decrease in the amount of trap sites increases Voc because decreases in Voc are brought about by the recombination of $I_2$ molecules with electrons trapped on the $TiO_2$ surfaces. Selective staining for tandem cells is proposed. The second topic is on the contact between a $SnO_2$/F transparent conductive layer (TCL) and nano-particles. Polishing the TCL surfaces with silica nano-particles increases the contact, resulting in Jsc increases. The third topic is the fabrication of ion-paths in $TiO_2$ layers. Electro-spray coating of $TiO_2$ nano-particles onto TCL is shown to be effective for fabricating ion-paths in $TiO_2$ layers, which increases Jsc.

  • para-Aramid has limited dyeability because of its highly crystalline structure and compactness. To improve the dyeability of the para-aramid to reactive dyes of bright color in deep shade, the fabrics were photografted under continuous UV irradiation with dimethylaminopropyl methacrylamide and 4-benzoyl benzoic acid as a monomer and a hydrogen -abstractable photoinitiator respectively. A UV energy of 35J/$cm^2$ and a photoinitiator concentration of ten percent or more with respect to the monomer in the formulation was required for optimal photografting. Grafting yield increased with higher monomer application level. Surface analysis indicated significant alterations in the atomic composition of the photografted fabric surface and the fabric surface was covered with the grafted polymers. While the pristine para-aramid fabrics showed no appreciable dyeability to the ${\alpha}$-bromoacrylamide reactive dyes, the grafted para-aramid fabrics enhanced the dyeability to the reactive dyes substantially. In case of C.I. Reactive Blue 50, a K/S value of 8.7 can be obtained with the grafted para-aramid fabrics with a grafting yield of 2.3 %. Also the color fastness properties of the dyed fabrics was excellent in the conditions of washing, rubbing and light irradiation.

  • The aluminum nitride(AlN) layer on Al7075 substrate has been formed through nitrogen ion implantation process. The implantation process was performed under the conditions : 100 keV energy, total ion dose up to $2{\times}10^{18}\;ions/cm^2$. XRD analysis showed that aluminum nitride layers were formed by nitrogen implantation. The formation of Aluminum nitride enhanced surface hardness up to 265HK(0.02 N) from 150HK(0.02 N) for the unimplanted specimen. Micro-Knoop hardness test showed that wear resistance was improved about 2 times for nitrogen implanted specimens above $5\;{\times}\;10^{17}\;ions/cm^2$. The friction coefficient was measured by Ball-on-disc type wear tester and was decreased to 1/3 with increasing total nitrogen ion dose up to $1\;{\times}\;10^{18}ions/cm^2$. The enhancement of mechanical properties was observed to be closely associated with AlN formation. AES analysis showed that the maximum concentration of nitrogen increased as ion dose increased until $5\;{\times}\;10^{17}\;ions/cm^2$.

  • This study investigates the surface modification of a Hastelloy X plate and diffusion bonding in the assembly of surface modified plates. These types of plates are involved in the key processes in the fabrication of a process heat exchanger (PHE) for a $SO_3$ decomposer. Strong adhesion of a SiC film deposited onto Hastelloy X can be achieved by a thin SiC film deposition and a subsequent N ion beam bombardment followed by an additional deposition of a thicker film that prevents the Hastelloy X surface from becoming exposed to a corrosive environment through the pores. This process not only produces higher corrosion resistance as proved by electrolytic etching but also exhibits higher endurance against thermal stress above 9$900^{\circ}C$. A process for a good bonding between Hastelloy X sheets, which is essential for a good heat exchanger, was developed by diffusion bonding. The diffusion bonding was done by mechanically clamping the sheets under a heat treatment at $900^{\circ}C$. When the clamping jig consisted of materials with a thermal expansion coefficient that was equal to or less than that of the Hastelloy X, sound bonding was achieved.

  • With the advances in recent nanotechnology, mass transport phenomena have been receiving large attention both in academic researches and industrial applications. Nonetheless, it is not clearly determined which parameters are dominant at nanoscale mass transport. Especially, membrane is a kind of technology that use a selective separation to secure fresh water. The development of great separation membrane and membrane-based separation system is an important way to solve existing water resource problems. In this study, glass fiber-based membranes which are treated by graphene oxide (GO), poly-styrene sulfonate (GOP) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (GPS) were fabricated. Mass transport parameters were investigated in terms of material-specific and structure-specific dominance. The 3D structural information of GO, GOP, and GPS was obtained by using synchrotron X-ray nano tomography. In addition, electrostatic characteristic and water absorption rate of the membranes were investigated. As a result, we calculated internal structural information using Tomadakis-Sotrichos model, and we found that manipulation of surface characteristics can improve spacer arm effect, which means enhancement of water permeability by control length of ligand and surface charge functionality of the membrane.

  • Ti-6Al-4V alloys are mainly used as dental materials due to their excellent biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, and chemical stability. However, they have a low bioactivity with bioinertness in the body. Therefore, they could not directly bond with human bone. To improve their applications, their bone bonding ability and bone formation capacity should be improved. Thus, the objective of this study was to improve the bioinert surface of titanium alloy substrate to show bioactive characteristics by performing surface modification using wollastonite powder. Commercial bioactive wollastonite powder was successfully deposited onto Ti-6Al-4V alloy using a room temperature spray process. It was found that wollastonite-coated layer showed homogeneous microstructure and uniform thickness. Corrosion resistance of Ti-6Al-4V alloy was also improved by plasma electrolytic oxidation treatment. Its wettability and bioactivity were also greatly increased by wollastonite coating. Results of this study indicate that both plasma electrolytic oxidation treatment and wollastonite coating by room temperature spray process could be used to improve surface bioactivity of Ti-6Al-4V alloy substrate.

  • In this research commercial polyethersulfone (PES) membrane was modified using $TiO_2$ nanoparticles (P-25 Degussa) and further irradiated using UV light to overcome the hydrophobicity and fouling nature of the membrane. Further the membranes were characterized using SEM and FTIR. Contact angle measurements study confirmed the hydrophilic tendency of the modified membrane by decreasing the contact angle from $73^{\circ}$ to $20.28^{\circ}$. The modified membranes showed higher flux and better anti-fouling properties as compared to the unmodified counterparts. The optimum conditions were found to be 0.5 wt% $TiO_2$ loading with 60 min membrane immersion and 10 min UV light illumination. The effect of different pH conditions of feed was analysed. Real wastewater filtration experiments also indicated better performance of modified membranes as opposed to neat PES membranes.
