This study focuses on investigating the influence of epoxy polymer crosslinking density, a crucial aspect in composite material matrices, on the yield surface using molecular dynamics simulations. Our approach involved generating epoxy models with diverse crosslinking densities and subjecting them to both uniaxial and multiaxial deformation simulations, accounting for the elasto-plastic deformation behaviors. Through this, we obtained key mechanical parameters including elastic modulus, yield point, and strain hardening coefficient, all correlated with crosslinking conversion ratios. A particularly noteworthy finding is the rapid expansion of the yield surface in the biaxial compression region with increasing crosslinking ratios, compared to the uniaxial tensile region. This unique behavior led to observable yield surface variations, indicating a significant pressure-dependent relationship of the yield surface considering plastic strain and crosslinking conversion ratio. These results contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex interplay between crosslinking density and plastic mechanical response, especially in the aspect of multiaxial deformation behaviors.
In this work, calcium hydroxide and magnesium carbonate as metal ionic crosslinking agents were used to introduce ionic crosslinking points to the ethylene vinylacetate (EVA) emulsions for the enhancement of water resistance and mechanical properties of emulsion films. The properties of EVA emulsion film were investigated in crosslinking density, thermal features, surface energy, and mechanical properties, such as tensile strength, elongation at break and tear strength. With the increasing content of metal ionic crosslinking agent, the crosslinking density of the EVA emulsion film increases, resulting into the improvement of water resistance. The surface energy and mechanical properties of the EVA emulsion film, however, showed somewhat different behaviors. The highest surface energy, tensile strength, and tear strength were observed when 0.4% for calcium hydroxide and 0.5% for magnesium carbonate was added respectively, because the EVA emulsion containing carboxylic acid forms strong carboxylate-metal bond of ionically-crosslinked system. Therefore, it can be concluded that metal ionic crosslinking agents, such as magnesium carbonate and calcium hydroxide are considered to improve water resistance and mechanical properties of the EVA emulsion.
With the synthesis of hyper crosslinked polymer particle (HCPP), having microporous structure with hydroxyl functional group, synthesized via polymerization reaction consists of three stepssuspension polymerization, hyper crosslinking by Friedel-Craft catalysis and hydrolysis reaction, the effects of the ratio of each monomer, hyper crosslinking conditions and $CO_2$ supercritical drying on the variations of surface morphology, pore size & distribution and BET surface area of HCPP have been investigated. It was observed that the formation of surface crack or fracture of HCPP was intimately related with the degree of hyper crosslinking reaction between microphase separated domains. And the value of BET surface area of HCPP increased with the increase of reaction temperature, time and the amounts of solvent used in hyper crosslinking step. Moreover, $CO_2$ supercritical drying was proven to be a very effective method for removing stabilizer, unreacted monomers and oligomers from HCPP but needed to add methanol as a co-solvent for efficient removing of residual catalyst.
In this work, magnesium carbonate and calcium hydroxide as metallic crosslinking agent were added to chlorosulfonated polyethylene rubber (CSM) emulsion to enhance the mechanical properties of emulsion film such as tensile strength, elongation at break, and tear strength and crosslinking density, thermal features, and surface energy were also investigated. Crosslinking density of the CSM emulsion film with increasing the amount of magnesium carbonate and calcium hydroxide increased, leading to the enhancement of water resistance. It was shown that compared with calcium hydroxide, magnesium carbonate had a little higher crosslinking density and $T_g$ value. The surface energy and mechanical characteristics of the CSM emulsion film, however, showed somewhat different behaviors. The highest surface energy, tensile strength, and tear strength were observed when 0.75% for magnesium carbonate and 1.0% for calcium hydroxide were added respectively. Therefore, it can be concluded that as metallic crosslinking agent to improve water resistance and mechanical properties of the CSM emulsion, magnesium carbonate is more preferable to calcium hydroxide.
Hyaluronic acid-based beads were prepared in order to develop a biomedical material for augumentation. Hyaluronic acid was crosslinked by 1,3-butadiene diepoxide in a suspension state maintained by rapid mixing of soybeen oil and hyaluronic acid solution. The particle size, surface area and swelling ratio were measured to investigate the physical properties of the synthesized beads and the bead surface was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The beads were formed in the range of $5-12vol\%$ concentration of crosslinking agent, which showed monodisperse size distribution. Both BET surface area and swelling ratio decreased as the concentration of either hyaluronic acid or crosslinking agent increased, and crosslinking temperature decreased. Bead size could be effectively controlled by mixing speed without affecting other physical property.
Surface modification of glutaraldehyde fixed bovine pericardium (GFBP) was successfully carried out with hyaluronic acid (HA) derivatives. At first, HA was chemically modified with adipic dihydrazide (ADH) to introduce hydrazide functional group into the carboxyl group of HA backbone. Then, GFBP was surface modified by grafting HA-ADH to the free aldehyde groups on the tissue and the subsequent HA-ADH hydrogel coating. HA-ADH hydrogels could be prepared through selective crosslinking at low pH between hydrazide groups of HA-ADH and crosslinkers containing succinimmidyl moieties with minimized protein denaturation. When HAADH hydrogels were prepared at low pH of 4.8 in the presence of erythropoietin (EPO) as a model protein, EPO release was continued up to $85\%$ of total amount of loaded EPO for 4 days. To the contrary, only $30\%$ of EPO was released from HA-ADH hydrogels prepared at pH=7.4, which might be due to the denaturation of EPO during the crosslinking reaction. Because the carboxyl groups on the glucuronic acid residues are recognition sites for HA degradation by hyaluronidase, the HA-ADH hydrogels degraded more slowly than HA hydrogels prepared by the crosslinking reaction of divinyl sulfone with hydroxyl groups of HA. Following a two-week subcutaneous implantation in osteopontin-null mice, clinically significant levels of calcification were observed for the positive controls without any surface modification. However, the calcification of surface modified GFBP with HA-ADH and HA-ADH hydrogels was drastically reduced by more than $85\%$ of the positive controls. The anti-calcification effect of HA surface modification was also confirmed by microscopic analysis of explanted tissue after staining with Alizarin Red S for calcium, which followed the trend as observed with calcium quantification.
Continuous photografting/crosslinking of polyethyleneglycol dimethacrylate oligomers onto cotton using a water-soluble benzophenone photoinitiator was investigated. Photografting increased with increasing irradiation dose, oligomer concentration and photoinitiator concentration. Maximum grafting efficiency of DM 400 and 600 were 83% and 79%, respectively. the photografting increased the wrinkle resistance of cotton implying surface crosslinking of cotton. bothsurface crosslinking and bulk crosslinking of cotton were accomplished via dual curing of a mixed formulation containing both a thermally curable component (BTCCA/SHP) and a UV-curable component. The wrinkle resistance of the crosslinked cotton was found to be higher when cured by thermal curing due to the facile post-polymerization of the UV active component. The presence of crosslinks in the dually crosslinked cotton was verified with FT-IR and thermogravimetric analysis.

We introduce a novel and efficient strategy for producing free-standing functional films via photo-crosslinking and electrostatic layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly, which can allow the buildup of hydrophilic multilayers onto hydrophobic surfaces. Hydrophobic multilayers were deposited on ionic substrates by a photo-crosslinking LbL process using photo-crosslinkable polymers. The photo-crosslinked surface was converted to an anionic surface by excess UV light irradiation. This treatment allowed also the stable adhesion between metal electrode or cationic polyelectrolyte and hydrophobic multilayers. After dissolving the ionic substrates in water, the formed free-standing films exhibited unique functionalities of inserted components within hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic multilayers.
In this study, a low-heat additive with a crosslink structure was dispersed in asphalt to simultaneously lower the production temperature of, and to modify the asphalt binder. This low-heat additive was prepared by different feeding ratios of styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) and polyvinylchloride (PVC) as polymer modifiers, and ZnO as a crosslinking agent. In order to confirm the crosslinking density and compatibility of the crosslink structured low-heat additive with asphalt, surface free energy, swelling ratio, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) parameters were carefully investigated to examine this relationship, and the role of the crosslink structured low-heat additive. In addition, by measuring the penetration and softening point of the asphalt binder, it was confirmed that it corresponds to PG 64-22. With increasing ZnO in the crosslink structured low-heat additive, the swelling ratio decreased, leading to an increase in crosslinking density. The crosslink structured low-heat additive and the asphalt binder were found to be compatible with each other by DSC and SEM analysis.
Poly(vinyl acetate) films containing benzophenone were photocrosslinked by continuous UV irradiation.UV irradiation of PVAc film containing 5% benzophenone induced bulk crosslinking of the polymer indicated by 84.1% of gel fraction after ethyl acetate extraction. The crosslinking was attributed to the recombination of tertiary polymer radicals generated upon UV irradiation, which was enhanced by the hydrogen abstraction of benzophenone. Also the UV irradiation resulted in scission of ester linkage and photooxidation of PVAc surface, which was verified by ATR and zeta potential analysis, implying that the PVAc surface became more polar and hydrophilic. The zeta potential proportionally increased from +4.5mV to -26.8 mV with increasing UV irradiation. Also the surface energy of the PVAc film increased with higher UV irradiation upto 56.5 $mJ/m^2$ by the enhanced Lewis acid/base component with larger contribution of Lewis acid parameter. Accordingly the crosslinked PVAc showed higher thermal stability with increasing UV energy.
