  • A frequency selective surface (FSS), whose unit cell consists of a ternary tree loop loaded with a modified tripole, is proposed to block multiple frequency bands. Target frequency bands correspond to Korean personal communication services, cellular mobile communication, and 2.4 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical bands. Through the adjustment of inter-element and inter-unit cell gaps, and adjustment of the length of elements, we present an FSS design method that makes the precise tuning of multiple resonance frequencies possible. Additionally, to verify the validity of our approach, simulation results obtained from a commercial software tool and experimental data are also presented.

  • In this paper, an approach for 3-D object segmentation and classification, which is based on eigen-values of polynomial function as their surface features, using neural network is proposed. The range images of 3-D objects are classified into surface primitives which are homogeneous in their intrinsic eigenvalue properties. The misclassified regions due to noise effect are merged into correct regions satisfying homogeneous constraints of Hopfield neural network. The proposed method has advantage of processing both segmentation and classification simultaneously.

  • The design characteristics of circular vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers are studied by using a newly developed equivalent network. Optical parameters, such as the stop-band or the reflectivity of periodic mirrors and the resonance wavelength, are explored for the design of these structures. To evaluate the differential quantum efficiency and the threshold current density, a transverse resonance condition of modal transmission-line theory is also utilized. This approach dramatically reduces the computational time as well as gives an explicit insight to explore the optical characteristics of circular vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs).

  • Taguchi's multi-characteristic experiments seek proper choice of levels of contollable factors which satisfy that all reponses of characteristics in a desirable range simultaneously. This aim can be achieved by response surface techniques that allow more flexible in modeling than traditional Taguchi's parameter design. In this article, a multi-response surface modeling and analysis techniques is proposed to deal with the multi-characteristic optimization problem in experimentation with Taguchi's controllable and noise factors.

  • A method of calculating wear amount which is based on digitally measured surface profile was suggested. The original profile of worn out profile was estimated from its adjacent surface profile by using least squares curve fitting with Fourier series. The approximated curve was well fitted to original surface profile. With this approach, more accurate calculation of the wear amount will be possible.

  • The measurement of 3D surface strain using the image processing method is another approach for strain measurement. The advantage of this method is that strains at several points included in a captured image can be obtained automatically from only one process. In this study, the whole process of automated surface strain measurement is presented. The strain distribution on a LDH specimen is illustrated as a result of the trial to develope an automated strain measurement system.

  • This paper proposes a new printed circuit board (PCB) assembly planning method for multi-head surface mounters. We present an integer programming formulation for the optimization problem, and propose a heuristic method to solve the large NP-complete problem within a reasonable time. A dynamic programming technique is then applied to the feeder arrangement optimization and placement sequence optimization to reduce the overall assembly time. Comparative simulation results are finally presented to verify the usefulness of the proposed method.

  • This study applies an on-line system, which employes an adaptive reconstruction technique to monitor and forecast ocean surface changes. The system adaptively generates an appropriate synthetic time series with recovering missing measurements for sequential images. The reconstruction method incorporates temporal variation according to physical properties of targets and anisotropic spatial optical properties into image processing techniques. This adaptive approach allows successive refinement of the structure of objects that are barely detectable in the observed series. The system sequentially collects the estimated results from the adaptive reconstruction and then statistically analyzes them to monitor and forecast the change in surface characteristics.

  • Since the mid 1990s airborne LiDAR data have been widely used, automation of building modeling is getting a central issue. LiDAR data processing for building modeling is involved with extracting surface patch elements by segmentation and surface fitting with optimal mathematical functions. In this study, simulation LiDAR data were generated with complex polyhedral roofs of buildings and an automatic modeling approach was proposed.

  • A new approach for the measurement of the surface coverages of monomolecular films fabricated by spontaneous adsorption of thiol compounds on gold is described. It is based on the mass change measurement with EQCM for the reductive electrochemical desorption of thiol in aqueous KOH solution. The results were compared with that of charge calculation during electrochemical desorption. The surface coverage value for eicosanethiol agrees with that obtained by charge calculation of electrochemical reduction as well as that expected from a geometrical model of the compact monolayer.
