  • Fibrous supercapacitors (FSs), owing to their high power density, good safety characteristic, and high flexibility, have recently been in the spotlight as energy storage devices for wearable electronics. However, despite these advantages, FCs face many challenges related to their active material of carbon fiber (CF). CF has low surface area and poor wettability between electrode and electrolyte, which result in low capacitance and poor long-term stability at high current densities. To overcome these limits, fibrous supercapacitors made using surface-activated CF (FS-SACF) are here suggested; these materials have improved specific surface area and better wettability, obtained by introducing porous structure and oxygen-containing functional groups on the CF surface, respectively, through surface engineering. The FS-SACF shows an improved ion diffusion coefficient and better electrochemical performance, including high specific capacity of 223.6 mF cm-2 at current density of 10 ㎂ cm-2, high-rate performance of 171.2 mF cm-2 at current density of 50.0 ㎂ cm-2, and remarkable, ultrafast cycling stability (96.2 % after 1,000 cycles at current density of 250.0 ㎂ cm-2). The excellent electrochemical performance is definitely due to the effects of surface functionalization on CF, leading to improved specific surface area and superior ion diffusion capability.

  • PURPOSE. The object of this study was to investigate the effect of UV irradiation (by a general commercial UV sterilizer) on anodized titanium surface. Surface characteristics and cellular responses were compared between anodized titanium discs and UV irradiated anodized titanium discs. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Titanium discs were anodized and divided into the following groups: Group 1, anodized (control), and Goup 2, anodized and UV irradiated for 24 hours. The surface characteristics including contact angle, roughness, phase of oxide layer, and chemical elemental composition were inspected. The osteoblast-like human osteogenic sarcoma (HOS) cells were cultured on control and test group discs. Initial cellular attachment, MTS-based cell proliferation assay, and ALP synthesis level were compared between the two groups for the evaluation of cellular response. RESULTS. After UV irradiation, the contact angle decreased significantly (P<.001). The surface roughness and phase of oxide layer did not show definite changes, but carbon showed a considerable decrease after UV irradiation. Initial cell attachment was increased in test group (P=.004). Cells cultured on test group samples proliferated more actively (P=.009 at day 2, 5, and 7) and the ALP synthesis also increased in cells cultured on the test group (P=.016 at day 3, P=.009 at day 7 and 14). CONCLUSION. UV irradiation induced enhanced wettability, and increased initial cellular responses of HOS cells on anodized titanium surface.

  • In this study, the oxyfluorination of PAN-based carbon fibers was undertaken at room temperature using fluorine-oxygen mixtures, and the influence of oxyfluorination on properties was investigated. The surface characteristics of the modified fiber were determined by using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and dynamic contact angle analyzer. The oxyfluorination of carbon fibers was one of the more effective methods to increase surface wettability by the formation of semicovalent C-F bond and C-O bond depending on reaction conditions. When oxygen mole fraction is increased from 0.5 to 0.9, it is probable that attached fluorine atoms at the surface of the fibers reacted with other components. As increased oxyfluorination time and decreased its pressures, semi-covalent peak is increased at 0.5 of oxygen mole fraction. The total surface free energy of oxyfluorinated carbon fibers decreased with increasing oxygen mole fraction over 0.5. These results indicate that the surface of carbon fibers became much more hydrophilic after the short oxyfluorination. The surface free energy of oxyfluorinated carbon fibers progressively decreased after 10 min treatment. The polar components of surface free energies were however, significantly higher for all oxyfluorinated samples than that for the untreated carbon fiber.

  • In this study, we attempt to produce a semi-elliptical riblet with a shark skin-like surface using wire electrical discharge machining (WEDM) and micro molding techniques. Our design for the production of the semi-elliptical mold includes an electrode, a winding roller, and a guide on the WEDM system. A replication mold with negative riblets is machined using WEDM, and a shark skin inspired surface with positive riblets is fabricated using a micro molding technique. For a comparison with the original shark skin, a shark skin replica is also produced using the micro molding technique directly from a shark skin template. Droplet contact angles on a flat surface, the shark skin replica, and the epoxy resin-based micro riblet shark skin-like surface are evaluated. The effect of a Teflon coating on the contact angles for the three different surfaces is also investigated. The results show the micro riblet with a shark skin-like surface has a similar contact angle as the shark skin replica, which means that the simplified riblet shark skin surface strongly influences the performance of wettability. This study confirms the effectiveness of using the WEDM method to prepare hydrophobic surfaces with diverse surface patterns.

  • The purpose of this study was twofold. One was to evaluate the wettability of 4 elastomeric impression materials on tooth and different kinds of filling materials. The other was to identify the effect of topical surfactants sprayed on the surface of each impression. The elastomeric impression mate rials used in this experimental study were one polyether(Impregum F) and three polyvinyl siloxanes(Provil novo, Zerosil, Imprint). The abutments were prepared for 3/4 crown or onlay on the extracted human first molar. The filling materials used in this study for the duplication of prepared abutment were composite resin, amalgam, and casting metal. Impression was taken by manufacturer's recommendations and the number of voids on the impression surface was counted. The topical surfactants were Spannex $II^{(R)}$ and $Cohere^{(R)}$. The wettability was evaluated by comparing the number of voids between non-treated group and treated groups. The results were as follows : 1. $Zerosil^{(R)}$ showed the least number of voids on the impression surface. The number of voids increased in order of Provil $novo^{(R)}$, Impregum $F^{(R)}$, and $Imprint^{(R)}$. 2. Impregum $F^{(R)}$ and $Zerosil^{(R)}$ showed the least number of voids on the surface of dental stone master cast. The number is inclosed in order of Provil $novo^{(R)}$ and Imprint 3. When abutment material is tooth, the number of voids on the surface of master cast was smallest compared with that of other abutment materials. The number of voids increased in order of casting metal, amalgam and composite resin 4. The number of voids on the surface of the dental stone master cast was smallest when Spannex $II^{(R)}$ was used, followed by $Cohere^{(R)}$ treated group and non-treated group. These results suggest that the difference in wettability caused by the types of rubber base impression materials as well as abutment materials can affect the number of voids. And the use of topical surfactant for rubber base impression materials can improve the wettability of the materials and enhance the accurate master cast which has fewer surface voids.

  • We have studied the effect of surface tension and flow rate of contaminants, wettability, frequency of applied voltage dependence of tracking breakdown. As the flow rate of contaminant is increasd, the surface resistivity is decreased, and the leakage current is increased, the time to tracking breakdown is decreased. It is found that time to tracking breakdown depends on the frequency of contaminant, that is difference of wettability. And as the frequency of applied voltage is increased, time to tracking breakdown decreased.

  • In this study, composite materials were put to dry interfacial treatment by use of plasma technology It has been presented that the optimum parameters for the best wettability of the samples at the time of generation of plasma were oxygen atmosphere, 0.1 Torr of system pressure, 100 W of discharge power, and 3 minutes of discharge time. The decrease in surface potential of charged samples by corona discharge indicates that the amount of accumulated electrical charges reduces and the charges that have been injected lessen rapidly when the duration of UV irradiation increases. The surface resistivity and the tensile strength of plasma treated samples, a longer UV irradiation time resulted in decreased insulation.

  • Resin impregnation of carbon materials was affected by surface of carbon materials. The surface of carbon materials with coupling treatment improved comparability and wettability with resin, and that increased impregnation efficiency and properties of carbon materials. As a results of FT-IR, The silanol was coated on carbon surface with one layer. Coupling treatment of carbon materials increased impregnation efficiency, which improved porosity, mechanical strength, density and friction behavior.
