The purpose of this study is to make case studies on estimation of shear wave velocity in core zone of some rockfill dams by MASW (Multi-channel Analysis of Surface Waves) and to compare the results of case studies with those of the empirical method. Furthermore, the purpose is to recommend the range of shear wave velocity in core zone by MASW and to supply the preliminary data for estimation of shear wave velocity in core zone which is needed for dynamic analysis. From the results of case studies and the comparison between the results of case studies and those of empirical equation, it was found that the shear wave velocities obtained by MASW were smaller than those by the empirical recommendation (Sawada & Takahashi) in the depth of more than 10 m. Also, it is recommended that using the lower bound of empirical formulation by Sawada and Takahashi be available and resonable in case that MASW is not available due to the field condition and the investigation is preliminary.
The paper aims to analyze the behaviour of torsional type surface waves propagating through fluid saturated inhomogeneous porous media clamped between two inhomogeneous anisotropic media. We considered three types of inhomogeneities in upper anisotropic layer which varies exponentially, quadratically and hyperbolically with depth. The anisotropic half space inhomogeneity varies linearly with depth and intermediate layer is taken as inhomogeneous fluid saturated porous media with sinusoidal variation. Following Biot, the dispersion equation has been derived in a closed form which contains Whittaker's function and its derivative, for approximate result that have been expanded asymptotically up to second term. Possible particular cases have been established which are in perfect agreement with standard results and observe that when one of the upper layer vanishes and other layer is homogeneous isotropic over a homogeneous half space, the velocity of torsional type surface waves coincides with that of classical Love type wave. Comparative study has been made to identify the effects of various dimensionless parameters viz. inhomogeneity parameters, anisotropy parameters, porosity parameter, and initial stress parameters on the torsional wave propagation by means of graphs using MATLAB. The study has its own relevance in connection with the propagation of seismic waves in the earth where fluid saturated poroelastic layer is present.

Calculations of the temperature coefficients of the elastic surface wave velocity and delay time were performed for the propagation along the X axis of rotated Y cut plane of the LiNbO3 and LiTaO3. Measurements of the temperature dependence of delay time of the elastic surface wave were also performed for the propagation along the X axis of a 130" rotated Y cut plane of the LiNb03 at the temperature range from liquid He to room temperature. Experimental value 70$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ of the temperature coefficient of the delay time of the elastic surface wave agrees well with the calculated value 72.7$\times$10-a/$^{\circ}C$. The temperature coefficient of delay time of elastic surface wave propagating along the X axis of a 130$^{\circ}$ rotated Y cut plane o( the LiNbO3 is approximately 16$\times$10-6/$^{\circ}C$ at the near temperature of liquid He.d He.

By using propagation characteristics of ultrasonic surface wave, the depth of the surface hardened layer of SCM440 steel with different high frequency induction heat treatments was measured and the same was done on the carburized SCM415 steel. The propagation velocity of surface wave was constant and independent of frequency in t.he specimens with identical microstructure, it was, however, decreased by 59m/s in the hardened layers compared to the unhardened part. From t.he relationship between the effective case depth and the wave length of surface wave, the depth of the hardened layer could be measured and evaluated nondestructively for both induction hardened and carburized steels.

Offshore oscillating water columns (OWC) represent one of the most promising forms of wave energy converters. The hydrodynamic performance of such converters heavily depends on their interactions with ocean waves; therefore, understanding these interactions is essential. In this paper, a fully nonlinear 2D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model based on RANS equations and VOF surface capturing scheme is implemented to carry out wave energy balance analyses for an offshore OWC. The numerical model is well validated against published physical measurements including; chamber differential air pressure, chamber water level oscillation and vertical velocity, overall wave energy extraction efficiency, reflected and transmitted waves, velocity and vorticity fields (PIV measurements). Following the successful validation work, an extensive campaign of numerical tests is performed to quantify the relevance of three design parameters, namely incoming wavelength, wave height and turbine damping to the device hydrodynamic performance and wave energy conversion process. All of the three investigated parameters show important effects on the wave-pneumatic energy conversion chain. In addition, the flow field around the chamber's front wall indicates areas of energy losses by stronger vortices generation than the rear wall.
Urban conditions such as underground facilities and ambient noises due to cultural activity restrict the application of conventional geophysical techniques in general. We used the refraction microtremor (REMI) technique as an alternative way to get the geotechnical information, in particular shear-wave (S-wave) velocity information, at a site along an existing rail road. The REMI method uses ambient noises recorded using standard refraction equipment to derived shear-wave velocity information at a site. It does a wavefield transformation on the recorded wavefield to produce Rayleigh wave dispersion curve, which are then picked and modeled to get the shear-wave velocity structure. At this site the vibrations from the running trains provided strong noise sources that allowed REMI to be very effective. REMI was performed along the planned new underground rail tunnel. In addition, Suspension PS logging (SPS) were carried out at selected boreholes along the profile in order to draw out the quantitative relation between the shear wave velocity from the PS logging and the rock mass rating (RMR) determined from the inspection of the cores recovered from the same boreholes, These correlations were then used to relate the shear-wave velocity derived from REMI to RMR along the entire profile. The correlation between shear wave velocity and RMR was very good and so it was possible to estimate the RMR of the total zone of interest for the design of underground tunnel,

The interaction of focused wave groups with a vertical wall is investigated based on the second order potential theory. The NewWave theory, which represents the most probable surface elevation under a large crest, is adopted. The analytical solutions of the surface elevation, velocity potential and wave force exerted on the vertical wall are derived, up to the second order. Then, a parametric study is made on the interaction between nonlinear focused wave groups and a vertical wall by considering the effects of angles of incidence, wave steepness, focal positions, water depth, frequency bandwidth and the peak lifting factor. Results show that the wave force on the vertical wall for obliquely-incident wave groups is larger than that for normally-incident waves. The normalized peak crest of wave forces reduces with the increase of wave steepness. With the increase of the distance of focal positions from the vertical wall, the peak crest of surface elevation, although fluctuates, decreases gradually. Both the normalized peak crest and adjacent crest and trough of wave forces become larger for shallower water depth. For focused wave groups reflected by a vertical wall, the frequency bandwidth has little effects on the peak crest of wave elevation or forces, but the adjacent crest and trough become smaller for larger frequency bandwidth. There is no significant change of the peak crest and adjacent trough of surface elevation and wave forces for variation of the peak lifting factor. However, the adjacent crest increases with the increase of the peak lifting factor.
We calculate the theoretical line profiles for 32 Cyg in order to investigate the influence of various velocity fields. Line profiles are calculated with wind accelerations driven by Alfven waves and described by velocity parameters. The results for Alfvenic wave model show weakened line profiles. For the orbital phases ${\Phi}$=0.78 and ${\Phi}$=0.06 the Alfvenic models show strong absorption part due to very low densities at the surface of the supergiant. Hence, we conclude the velocity gradient of the wind near the supergiant could influence on the theoretical line formation.
The relativistic theory has not been properly taken up by the marine hydrodynamicists. To take on a relativistic view, we confine ourselves to a simple vector case of a wave train in spacetime, to be shown to represent a sound wave or a surface wave, and bring in an observer who is travelling on another platform. We are interested in relative position of each event on these two worldlines. It, then, will be shown that the velocity, the acceleration, the encounter frequency, the group velocity, and the time and the space distance between the wave and the observer on the worldlines should all be derivable in principle. This is interpreted to mean that we really have the relativistic events taking place with different values of time dilation in the sense of 'spacetime', and that the well-known ${\lceil}special Theory of Relativity{\rfloor}$ applies just as well in hydrodynamic waves.

SPT-Uphole method was introduced for the evaluation of near subsurface shear wave velocity (Vs) profile. In SPT-Uphole method, SPT (Standard Penetration Test) which is common in geotechnical site investigation was used as a source and several surface geophones in line were used as receivers. 1D shearwave velocity profile can be obtained in the manner of downhole method, Vs distribution map which is the triangular shape around the boring point can be developed by tomography inversion. To obtain the exact travel time information of shear wave component, a procedure using the magnitude summation of vertical and horizontal components was used based on the evaluation of particle motion at the surface. It was verified that proposed method could give reliable Vs distribution map through the numerical study using the FEM (Finite Element Method) model. Finally, SPT-Uphole method was performed and the feasibility of proposed method was verified in the field.
