  • In this paper, we have designed and fabricated a hybrid ring coupler to prove the fabrication possibility of various passive components, applying millimeter wave using newly proposed transmission lines, i.e. BAMLs. The characteristics of the fabricated hybrid ing coupler were a the S31(coupling) of 3.58 dB, the S21(thru) of 3.31 dB at the 60 GHz center frequency, the S11(return loss) over 16.17 dB, S41(isolation) over 55 dB at 61 GHz, and the phase difference between port 2 and port 3 of $180{\pm}loat$ 60GHz. In order to reduce the size of hybrid ring coupler, we designed the hybrid ring coupler which inserts a slow wave structure. With this structure, we were able to reduce the hybrid ring coupler by $33\%$ area.

  • The interaction of monochromatic incident waves with a horizontal flexible membrane is investigated in the context of two-dimensional linear hydro-elastic theory. First, analytic diffraction and radiation solutions for a submerged impermeable horizontal membrane are obtained. Second, the theoretical prediction was compared with a series of experiments conducted in a two-dimensional wave tank at Texas A & M University. The measured reflection and transmission coefficients reasonably follow the trend of predicted values. Using the developed computer program, the performance of surface-mounted or submerged horizontal membrane wave barriers is tested with various system parameters and wave characteristics. It is found that the properly designed horizontal flexible membrane can be an effective wave barrier.

  • The bubbles are created by waves, raindrops, water collision, vessels sailing at sea, life activities of various marine organisms in the ocean and other sources. The bubbles affect the intensity and sound speed of acoustic waves in the ocean. We indirectly observed bubbles in order to understand the creation of and the effects of bubbles on sound waves, using an Acoustic Bubble Spectrometer (ABS) and CTD, from 04:00 to 17:00, 19 September, 2007. We also analyzed the correlation of wind speed and the generation of bubbles, the amount of bubbles, and the sound speed variation at 50, 60, and 70 kHz. Finally, We simulated the way how bubbles affect sound transmission based on the analysis results.

  • The numerical efforts are presented for investigation of irregular waves passing a slit cassion and a warock block breakwater. In the numerical model, the Reynolds equations are solved by a finite difference method and $k-\varepsilon$ model is employed for the turbulence analysis. To track the free surface displacement, the volume of fluid method(VOF) is employed. Numerical predictions of reflection and transmission coefficients are compared with those of the warock block breakwater with the slit caisson. Energy dissipation and seawater exchange rates of the slit caisson are better than those of the warock block breakwater.

  • An analytical method is developed to study the propagation of surface waves across infilled trenches. The Green's function technique is used to estimate the reflection and transmission coefficients of Rayleigh waves across a semi-infinite plate inserted between two homogeneous quarter-spaces. After validating the method against experimental data, influence of the material contrast and the angle of incidence on the screening effectiveness of an infilled trench is examined.

  • In this work, a plastic diffuser which has a surface similar to Sinusoidal wave profile for application of LC D backlighting is proposed. This new pattern diffuser is achieved the values of the transmission efficiency an d diffusion efficiency all over 70%, and it also has the value about gain over 1.1. Additionally, this new patter n diffuser has high uniformity when we put it in the LCD backlight module and its thickness is only 2mm. With these foregoing properties, this diffuser film can widely applied to LCD displays systems etc.

  • Non-stochiometric CdS:H films grown on polyethersulfon (PES) flexible polymer substrates at room temperature by R.F. sputtering technique. They exhibited a dark- and photo-sheet resistance of $2.7\times10^5$ and $\sim\;50\;{\Omega}$/square, respectively. These values were realized by an optimum control of both hydrogen doping-levels and the surface morphologies of the films. The comparison between the real and the simulated results for the shielding and the transmission by the free space measurement system in the X-band frequency range (8.2 - 12.4 GHz) was also addressed in this study. Samples overlapped with 13 layers of CdS:H/PES were consistent with the transmission results of pure aluminum metal films ($0.1\;{\Omega}$/square) deposited on PES substrates. As a result, by the simples tacking of the CdS:H/PES layers, the perfect control of the shielding and the transmission of the EM wave in the range of X-band frequency is possible by avisible light alone, and their results are especially very outstanding findings in the stealth function of the radome(Radar+Dome) such as aircrafts, ships, and missiles.

  • In this study, the elastomer cover, a new contact material, was developed to establish the customized ultrasonic measurement considering surface irregularities of stone cultural heritages. The cover exhibits high elastic force and wear resistance because it has tensile strength of 17MPa and elongation of 625%. In addition, as a result of comparative experiments for the seven types according to transducers and contact materials including the elastomer cover, rock surface irregularities significantly affect attenuation of ultrasonic velocity. The phenomenon was more noticeable in the chiseling finish and indirect transmission measurement rather than the dabbed finish and direct transmission measurement. However, the Type F using the exponential transducer and elastomer cover showed stable P-wave velocity and high amplitude regardless of the surface irregularities. This because the elastomer cover sufficiently sticks to surface irregularities and removes pores between a transducer and a rock specimen. Therefore, the Type F should be used for the ultrasonic measurement of stone cultural heritages with surface irregularities.

  • A new planar metamaterial (MTM) with simultaneous negative values of permittivity (${\varepsilon}$) and permeability (${\mu}$) is proposed. Our MTM is composed of two identical copper patterns etched on both sides of dielectric laminate, which is very thin and easy to fabricate. Unlike conventional MTMs, the proposed structure shows a negative refractive index (NRI) behavior with respect to a normally incident wave. To explain the underlying principle of the NRI characteristics, an equivalent resonant circuit model based on surface current density distribution is investigated. An eigenmode analysis and a three-dimensional wave simulation for the stacked MTM prism are also performed to verify the existence of negative refraction. The experimental results from the transmission and reflection measurement ensure the validity of our design approach and show good agreement with the theoretically predicted effective medium parameters.
