  • A 2D finite-element numerical simulation has been developed to investigate the generation of ultrasonic waves in a homogeneous isotropic elastic slab under a line-focused laser irradiation. Discussing the physical processes involved in the thermoelastic phenomena, we describe a model for the pulsed laser generation of ultrasound in a metal slab. Addressing an analytic method, on the basis of an integral transform technique, for obtaining the solutions of the elastodynamic equation, we outline a finite element method for a numerical simulation of an ultrasonic wave propagation. We present the numerical results for the displacements and the stresses generated by a line-focused laser pulse on the surface of a stainless steel slab.

  • In this paper, ultrasonic tomography by the Mode-Converted Rayleigh wave (MCRW) in the back-scattered direction is presented. When a beam with a short pulse and narrow beam width enters a reflector with smooth surface, in general, two major arrivals can be observed in the output waveform: the specular reflection and the radiation of the MCRW from the reflector surface. The time-delay between the two waves is relatively large and thus can be measured easily. This large time-delay is due to the fact that the MCRW is slower than incident wave. In our method, this large time- delay is used for ultrasonic image reconstruction. To effectively detect the MCRW, the arrayed-receiving transducers are circularly arranged around the transmitter. In addition, a deconvolution method is employed to remove specular echo signals for reconstructing the MCRW image.

  • In this paper, infinite frequency selective surface comprised with rectangular plates which are arranged periodically is analyzed using Method of Moment based on Galerkin's method. In analysis, it is assumed that the plates are infinite thin perfect conductors. Based on this assumption, the reflection characteristics of the FSS is compared according to the polarization of plane-wave and the direction of incidence. In the results, the variation of reflection characteristics of the FSS highly depends on the direction of incidence when the polarization of the plane-wave is parallel to the plane of incidence, but the variation is nearly independent upon direction of incidence when the polarization of the plane-wave is perpendicular to the plane of incidence.

  • Nonlinear partial differential equations are more suitable to model many physical phenomena in science and engineering. In this paper, we consider three nonlinear partial differential equations such as Novikov equation, an equation for surface water waves and the Geng-Xue coupled equation which serves as a model for the unidirectional propagation of the shallow water waves over a at bottom. The main objective in this paper is to apply the generalized Riccati equation mapping method for obtaining more exact traveling wave solutions of Novikov equation, an equation for surface water waves and the Geng-Xue coupled equation. More precisely, the obtained solutions are expressed in terms of the hyperbolic, the trigonometric and the rational functional form. Solutions obtained are potentially significant for the explanation of better insight of physical aspects of the considered nonlinear physical models.

  • The aerodynamic characteristics of the Wells turbine for wave energy conversion have been investigated by the numerical simulation to reproduce hysteretic behaviors. The pressure distributions on the suction surface of the blade were investigated to find out the cause of the hysteretic mechanism. The results have shown that the hysteretic behavior is associated with streamwise vertical flow appearing near the suction surface and become more obvious. as the tip clearance and solidity change. Also it has shown that such phenomena occur due to different behaviors of wakes in the accelerating and decelerating flow process. The CFD analysis shows a good agreement with experimental results.

  • Some applications require structural health monitoring in inaccessible components. This paper presents a technique useful for Structural Health Monitoring of double wall structures, such as double wall steam pipes and double wall pressure vessels separated from an ultrasonic transducer by three layers. Detection has been demonstrated at distances in excess of one meter for a fixed transducer. The case presented here is for one of the layers, the middle layer, being a fluid. For certain transducer configurations the wave propagating in the fluid is a wave with low velocity and attenuation. The paper presents a model based on wave theory and finite element simulation; the experimental set-up and observations, and comparison between theory and experiment. The results provide a description of the technique, understanding of the phenomenon and its possible applications in Structural Health Monitoring.

  • The electromagnetic wave shielding properties of the carbon coils with polyurethane composites were investigated in the frequency range of 0.25 ~ 1.5 GHz. The shielding effectiveness of the composite having the various-shaped carbon coils were measured and discussed according to the weight percent of the carbon coils in the composites with the thickness of the composites layers. We confirmed that the absorption was the main mechanism to shield the electromagnetic wave interference in the carbon coils composites.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze the hydrodynamic properties of a 2D floating body with moon pool using a 2D fully nonlinear Numerical Wave Tank(NWT). This NWT was developed based on the Boundary Element Method(BEM) with potential theory and fully nonlinear free surface boundary conditions. Free surface elevations in the moon pool were calculated in the time domain for various frequencies of forced body motions. The added-mass and damping coefficients of the heaving body were also obtained. The present numerical results were compared with the analytic and experimental results and their accuracy was verified.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the surface waves in fibre-reinforced anisotropic thermoelastic medium subjected to gravity field. The theory of generalized surface waves has firstly developed and then it has been employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz., Stoneley waves, Rayleigh waves and Love waves. The analytical expressions for displacement components, force stress and temperature distribution are obtained in the physical domain by using the harmonic vibrations. The wave velocity equations have been obtained in different cases. The numerical results are given and presented graphically in Green-Lindsay and Lord-Shulman theory of thermoelasticity. Comparison was made with the results obtained in the presence and absence of gravity, anisotropy, relaxation times and parameters for fibrereinforced of the material medium. The results indicate that the effect of gravity, anisotropy, relaxation times and parameters for fibre-reinforced of the material medium are very pronounced.

  • In this study, an efficient algorithm for the numerical search of the geodesic path of the creeping wave on a doubly curved surface is developed. The ellipsoid as a doubly curved surface is studied because of its three dimensional nature in that it can be used to simulate the body of an aircraft, or a missile body. Numerical result of the geodesic path on an ellipsoid is given.
