Every nuclear power plant measured concentrations of tritium in groundwater and surface water around the plants periodically. It was not easy to predict the tritium concentration only with these measurement data in case of various release scenarios. KAERI developed a new approach to find the relationship between the tritium release rate and tritium concentration in the environment. The approach was based upon a dynamic compartment model. In this paper the dynamic compartment model was modified to predict the tritium behavior more accurately. The mechanisms considered for the transfer of tritium between the compartments were evaporation, groundwater flow, infiltration, runoff, and hydrodynamic dispersion. Time dependent source terms of the compartment model were introduced to refine the release scenarios. Also, transfer coefficients between the compartments were obtained using realistic geographical data. In order to illustrate the model various release scenarios were developed, and the change of tritium concentration in groundwater and surface water around the nuclear power plants was estimated.

From previous studies, there is a strong possibility in buffaloes that the marked increase in blood volume (BV) under hot conditions contributes to heat transportation from the rectum to the skin. The present study was done to clarify changes with environmental temperature on water-shift between blood and extracellular fluid (ECF), heat distribution between the rectum and the skin, and blood flow rates (BFR) at the hind legs (reflecting the skin surface). Four buffaloes and four Friesian cows were successively exposed to three different temperatures of $20^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ and $35^{\circ}C$. BV and ECF volume were measured with Evans' blue and sodium-thiocyanate dilution methods, respectively. Rectal and subcutaneous (as the skin) temperatures were measured by copper-constantan thermocouples. BFR were measured by a supersonic blood flow meter. With an increase in environmental temperature, skin temperature in buffaloes increased significantly than cows, but rectal temperature was not significantly different between two species. BV, especially plasma compartment, increased significantly in only buffaloes, while ECF volume did not change in both species. BFR increased significantly in buffaloes, but not in cows. From these results, the increased of BV may be caused by water flowing from ECF compartment. The water-shift may induce the increase of BFR and skin temperature. It is suggested in the present study that internal changes of blood compartment in buffaloes contribute to transfer of heat to the skin surface.
An electrodialysis process was operated for a long period to investigate the scale formation on the membrane surface. During the desalination process, concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ and $SO_4^{2-}$ ions increased continuously in the concentrate compartment and eventually caused precipitation on the cation exchange membrane (Neosepta CMX) surface. During the initial scale formation, the performance of the process and membrane characteristics did not show significant changes, except the decrease in limiting current density of the CMX membrane occurring due to increase in the salt concentration in the concentrate compartment. Eventually, the limiting current density of the fouled CMX membrane dropped significantly to $300\;A/m^2$ as water dissociation occurred in the CMX membrane. It was concluded that the fouling was caused mainly by the scale formation on the cation exchange membrane surface in the concentrate and consequent water dissociation. Also the scale formation was reasonably predicted by the solubility of $CaSO_4$.

An Ozone reaction model combined with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technique was developed in this research, in the simulation of ozonation, hydrodynamic behavior as well as reaction model is important because ozone is supplied to treated water as gas ozone. In order to evaluate hydrodynamic behavior in an ozone contactor, CFD technique was applied. CFD technique elucidated hydrodynamic behavior in the selected ozone contactor, which consisted of three main chambers. Three back-mixing zones were found in the contactor. The higher velocities of water were observed in the second and third compartments than that in the first compartment. The flow of the opposite direction to the main flow was observed near the water surface. Based on the results of CFD simulation, the ozone contactor was divided into small compartments. Mass balance equations were established were established in each compartment with reaction terms. This reaction model was intended to predict dissolved ozone concentration, especially. We concluded that the model could predict favorably the mass balance of ozone, namely absorption efficiency of gaseous ozone, dissolved ozone concentration and ozone consumption. After establishing the model, we discussed the effect of concentration of gaseous ozone at inlet, temperature and organic compounds on dissolved ozone concentration.
A dynamic compartment model was developed to evaluate the transport of accidently released radionuclides onto rice-fields. In the model, the surface water compartment and shoot-base absorption were introduced to account for the effect of irrigation, which is essential to a rice cultivation. The soil mixing by plough and irrigation before transplanting rice was also considered, and the rate of root-uptake and shoot-base absorption were modeled in terms of the function of biomass. In order to test the validation of the model, it was applied to the analysis of some simulated $^{137}Cs$ deposition experiments that were performed while cultivating rice in a greenhouse using soils sampled from rice-fields around Kori, Yonggwang and Ulchin nuclear power plants. The model prediction was generally agreed within about one order of magnitude with experimental data.

The relationship between the tritium release rate from the nuclear power plant and tritium concentration in the environment around the Kori site was modeled. The tritium concentration in the atmosphere was calculated by multiplying the release rates and $\chi$/Q values, and the d3V deposition rate at each sector according to the direction and the distance was obtained using a dry deposition velocity. The area around Kori site was divided into 6 zones according to the deposition rate. The six zones were divided into 14 compartments for the numerical simulation. Transfer coefficients between the compartments were derived using site characterization data. Source terms were calculated from the dry deposition rates. Tritium concentration in surface soil water and groundwater was calculated based upon a compartment model. The semi-analytical solution of the compartment model was obtained with a computer program, AMBER. The results showed that most of tritium deposited onto the land released into the atmosphere and the sea. Also, the estimated concentration in the top soil agreed well to that measured. Using the model, tritium concentration was predicted in the case that the tritium release rates were doubled.

A ship may suffer sinkage and heel due to flood in a compartment caused by damage on a deck. The motion and waveloads of the heeled ship floating in waves have been analyzed by making use of a three dimensional potential theory taking account of the hydrodynamic pressure in the flooded compartments. The shear forces and bending moments due to radiation-diffraction waves have been calculated by the direct integration of the 3-d hydrodynamic pressure on the outer and inner hulls of floating barges. The motion responses and the relative flow rate across the mean free surface of the water in the flooded compartments are also presented.

Tightness performance that blocks compartments is important for surface ships to achieve superior mission performance and survivability in combat environments. To meet the above requirements, airtightness of the structural elements and the appropriate strength to specific areas are checked during a test run after ship construction. In particular, air tests of compartments adjacent to the water surface are performed. In an air test, air is injected into the compartment up to the test pressure of the test memo. The pressure drop value is checked after 10 minutes to determine if the requirements of the corresponding area are satisfied. In summer, however, when the influence of the outside temperature is large, a phenomenon in which the internal pressure increases during the air test was identified. This phenomenon reduces the reliability of the test result. Therefore, a system was designed to compensate for temperature changes in the compartments through this study. The developed system calculates the amount of pressure change caused by a temperature change in the compartment and outputs a correction value. The pressure change was calculated using the ideal gas equation, reflecting the maintenance, increase, and decrease in temperature during the test process. A comparison of the calculated pressure correction value with the database of NIST REFPROP revealed a difference of 0.126% to a maximum of 0.253%.
The unstirred water layer (UWL), which has been known to exist in the boundary of the intestinal lumen and intestinal wall, often behaves as an absorption barrier especially for lipophilic drugs. The intestinal absorption of drugs is often characterized using Caco-2 cell monolayers grown on Transwell polycarbonate membranes. The permeability $(P_{app})$ of drugs across the cell monolayer might be influenced by the agitation of the donor compartment, since the width of UWL on the surface of the cell monolayer would be reduced by the agitation. In this study, the effect of agitation of the donor compartment with 60 rpm on the permeability was measured for 12 drugs with a wide range of lipophilicity and permeability. The $P_{app}$ of mannitol, tributylmethyl ammonium, cimetidine, ranitidine, hydrocortisone, benzylpenicillin and loxoprofen was not influenced by the agitation, while the $P_{app}$ of theophylline, propranolol, YH439, phenylpropanolamine and testosterone was increased by the agitation. There was a significant correlation between the increase of $P_{app}$ by agitation and the lipophilicity for the compounds having $P_{app}>2{\times}10^{-5}$ cm/sec. No correlation was observed for the difference in $P_{app}$ by agitation and the molecular weight, or lipophilicity of the drugs. Therefore, the agitation rate of the donor compartment in the Caco-2 cell monolayer study should be carefully controlled in order to estimate $P_{app}$ reproducibly especially for lipophilic drugs.
In order practically to use fire-defective glazing materials for the compartment wall where a fire-protection rating is mandated, there have been many trials internationally, This research focuses on a feasibility that, if certain water film covered all surface of glass, the glazing system can endure without breaking out under the compartment fire. First of all, a water film spray system was specially designed to wet the entire surface of the glass and also to have tiny small amount of water rebounded from the surface after emitted from nozzles. After this system has proven to have perfect performance, small-scale tests were done to find out if the water film covered glazing system react to the high temperature curve in a small furnace room. Finally, on basis of the obtained data, full-scale experiments were done so that water-film covered glazing system can pass the Korean Standard (KS) test for fire resistance, KS F2257.
