A new approach which combines implicit surface scheme and point projection method is presented in order to fill the arbitrarily shaped holes in the polygon model. In the method a trimmed surface which has an outer boundary curve is generated by using the implicit surface scheme and normal projection of point onto the base surface. The base surface is constructed by creating smooth implicit surface from the incomplete polygon model through which the surface should pass. In this paper an implicit surface is defined by a radial basis function, a continuous scalar-valued function over the domain $R^3$. The base surface is the set of all points at which this scalar function takes on the value zero and is created by placing zero-valued constraints at the vertices of the polygon model. In order to show the validity of the present study, various hole fillings are carried out for the complex polygon model of arbitrary topology.
In this study, a complete 3D surface reconstruction method is proposed based on the concept that the vertices, of surface model can be completely matched to the unstructured point cloud. In order to generate the initial mesh model from the point cloud, the mesh subdivision of bounding box and shrink-wrapping algorithm are introduced. The control mesh model for well representing the topology of point cloud is derived from the initial mesh model by using the mesh simplification technique based on the original QEM algorithm, and the parametric surface model for approximately representing the geometry of point cloud is derived by applying the local subdivision surface fitting scheme on the control mesh model. And, to reconstruct the complete matching surface model, the insertion of isolated points on the parametric surface model and the mesh optimization are carried out. Especially, the fast 3D surface reconstruction is realized by introducing the voxel-based nearest-point search algorithm, and the simulation results reveal the availability of the proposed surface reconstruction method.
Patterned alignment of reactive mesogens on a grating was investigated for use in phase retarders. The relative importance of the topology and the surface energy of the grating for RM alignment is discussed. Possible mechanisms of RM alignment for different grating pitches are discussed.
Recently, interests in subsidence hazard have been increased due to the underground construction such as subway construction and managements of abandoned mines. GIS analysis of subsidence hazard has a lot of advantages in handling of spatial data and managing database. For better result of GIS analysis, there are some necessities of modifying previous subsidence theory and model. To take surface profile into account allows the application of complicated topology. Furthermore. for 3-dimensional analysis. two subsidence profile curves that are perpendicular to each other should be considered simultaneously. Through these modifications, the model for subsidence analysis using GIS can be established. With ideal case of cavities and other conditions, GIS analysis was accomplished and meaningful results were produced. More realistic properties of cavity. soil layers, groundwater condition and topology will enable GIS analysis method to produce more reliable result and to widen the area of applications.

The recent issue of optical pickup actuators is to apply optical storage devices to mobile devices such as a cellular phone and PDA. It requires actuators to become smaller than conventional types. As the size becomes smaller, the magnetic force is reduced and the assembly of optical pickup actuators becomes more difficult. In addition, its dynamic characteristics are changed. In this paper, methods to improve magnetic forces and dynamic characteristics are suggested and the optimal result of the plate spring design is obtained. A diamond shape magnet and the fine pattern coil (FPC) are used to improve magnetic forces and damping elements are attached to decrease the peak magnitude of the mode instead of using structural damping, mostly for the purpose of improving the accuracy of the finite element simulation. To get more stable dynamic characteristics than conventional ones, a plate spring is applied to the optical pickup actuator and it is optimized with topology and parameter optimization to obtain the concept and the detail design, respectively.
In this study, the lightweight design of butterfly valve disc component for power plant based on topology optimization was performed. Here, commercial finite element (FE) analysis software was used. The external shape of the basic disc model was not deformed, and the internal element density was removed to make it lightweight. Optimal design was performed each other after the disc plate and two brackets attached on the surface of the disc were separated. Once the optimal shapes were selected, they were assembled to build up the 3-D lightweight valve disc model. After applying pressure to this model, FE analysis was performed to confirm the structural safety.

Thed effects of Ar or Oxygen RF plasma treatment on the adhesion behavior of Cr films to polyimide sub-strates have been investigated by using SEM, XRD, AES, and $90^{\circ}$peel test. By applying RF plasma treatment of the polyimide surface prior to metal deposition, the peel adhesion strength of Cu/Cr films sputtered onto the fully cured BPDA-PDA polyimide was highly increased from about 3g/mm to 90 ~ 100g/mm. Improved peel adhesion strength of Cr/polyimide interfaces due to RF plasma treatment was attributed to the contributions from surface cleaning, Cr-polyimide bonding at the interface, and force required for plastic deformation of the film. While the surface topology change of the polyimide caused by RF plasma treatment makes a little contri-bution to the improved adhesion.
$Y(Pr)Ba_2Cu_4O_8$ system is one of the most studied high temperature superconductors. Substitution of Pr for Y in this system suppresses $T_c$ and superconductivity finally disappears at a high Pr doping. There are competing theories for the suppression of $T_c$ but systematic experimental results are very rare. In order to find the change in Fermi surface topology which can affect the superconductivity, we have performed angle-resolved photoemission studies on single crystal samples of $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ and $PrBa_2Cu_4O_8$. While the Fermi surface of $YBa_2Cu_4O_8$ shows a similar topology to those of other cuprates, we observe only 1D like band structures in $PrBa_2Cu_4O_8$. We find no significant differences in the chain band for both samples.
To interpret the perception that originates from tactile sensibility during people touch and recognize the object surfaces, this study focuses on the development of a friction model that can describe the interaction of a stylus pen sliding over the counter surfaces. In addition, the study includes several other experimental factors such as the pressure, temperature, and topology of surface, which can have an effect on the emotional user experience concerning various surfaces; this research aims to suggest a method to quantitatively evaluate the relation between these experimental parameters and emotional user experience. Accordingly, the objective of research comprises the friction characteristic technology for measurement of fine tribological behavior and a standard to quantify the emotional feedback. Existing panels or input devices that provide interaction feedback about user actions simply operate with a single frequency vibration or sound response. On the contrary, this research investigates various interaction characteristics including friction force, frequency, and surface topology synthetically. Using the developed model, which can explain the relation between the friction parameters and emotional user experience, developers can design their product in order to provide the user with expected emotional sensibility. Consequently, it can contribute to reduce the development cost about sensitivity model.
