Applicability Assessment of Acid Treated Red Mud as Adsorbent Material for Removal of Six-valent Chromium from Seawater (해수에서 6가 크롬 제거를 위한 흡착제로서의 산처리 적니 적용성 검토)

  • Six-valent chromium ($Cr^{6+}$) is a highly toxic pollutant, supplied in a variety of industrial activities such as leather tanning, cooling tower blowdown, and plating. Herein, we investigated the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ from aqueous phase using low-cost adsorbents. Steel slag, montmorillonite, illite, kaolinite, red mud, and acid treated red mud with 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 M HCl were used as adsorbent for the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ and the results showed that acid treated red mud with 2.0 M HCl (ATRM-2.0 M) had higher adsorption capacity of $Cr^{6+}$ than other adsorbents used. Accordingly, $Cr^{6+}$ removal by ATRM-2.0 M were studied in a batch system with respect to changes in initial concentration of $Cr^{6+}$, initial solution pH, adsorbent dose, adsorbent mixture, and seawater. Equilibrium sorption data were described well by Freundlich isotherm model. The influence of initial solution pH on $Cr^{6+}$ adsorption was insignificant. The use of the ATRM-2.0 M alone was more effective than mixing it with other adsorbents including red mud, zeolite, oyster shell, lime stone, and montmorillonite for the removal of $Cr^{6+}$. The $Cr^{6+}$ removal of the ATRM-2.0 M was slightly less in seawater than deionized water, resulting from the presence of anions in seawater competing for the favorable adsorption site on the surface of ATRM-2.0 M. It was concluded that the ATRM-2.0 M can be used as a potential adsorbent for the removal of $Cr^{6+}$ from the aqueous solutions.

Occurrence of butyltin compounds in marine environment of Gwangyang Bay, Korea

  • Butyltin (BT) compounds were measured in seawater, sediment, sediment core, settling solids, and plankton from Gwangyang Bay in 2001, Tributyltin (TBT) was detected in seawater from 1 out of the 7 seawater sampling sites and in sediment from 18 out of the 35 sediment sampling sites. The highest concentration of TBT was found in the sediment from the site near Yeosu Harbor (53 ng Sn/g dry wt), acting as the point source for TBT The mean concentrations of TBT were in the order of plankton> settling solids> sediment. The degradation indexes ([DBT]+[MBT]/[TBT]) for the plankton were less than 1, indicating the possibility of recent inputs of TBT. The indexes for the sediment and settling solids ranged from 1.14 to 8.73. The composition of the BT compounds found in the settling solids was similar to that found in the sediment. The vertical profile of the total BT compounds in the sediment was characterized by an abrupt decline from the surface. However, no butyltin compounds appeared below a depth of 10 cm, corresponding to the 1980s. Accordingly, the current results demonstrated that the levels of all butyltin species in the environment of Gwangyang Bay were relatively lower than those in other polluted coastal areas. The vertical profile also suggested a fairly recent history for the down-core.

  • Seawater temperature, salinity, inorganic nutrients and the standing crop of phytoplankton species of the 841 water samples from the upper 125 m at 15-40 stations on the 6 semiannual cruises in the southwestern waters of the East Sea (Korea) were studied during the period from September, 1981 to October, 1984, Among the 235 taxa identified two pennate diatioms, cylindrotheca closterium and Nitzschia delicatissima, were the most common and dominant species. The multiple regression analyses between net phytoplankton abundance (dependent variable) and associated environmental factors(independent variables) were applied to the samples from the surface mixed-layer. In spring the coefficients for the seawater temperature was 1. to 4.2 times greater than those for salinity, while the coefficients for the salinity was 2.1 to 3.4 times greater than those for seawater temperature in autumn. Distribution seawater temperature in spring, and salinity in autumn. Schematically the zone of high standing crops moved about on the T-S diagram in a cyclic manner. The distribution of phytoplankton standing crop was quite closely associated with the hydrographic conditions among various kinds of environmental factors studied.

Leaching Behavior of LD Slag

  • LD slag, that is, a by-product of steel making process, has been mainly used as land construction materials. Recently, the seashore application of LD slag was tried in Japan and Korea tut the reaction between LD slag and seawater was not studied yet. We tried to clarify the leaching reaction and/or mechanism of LD slag and the reaction between seawater and LD slag. We tried to apply these results to the decarbonization of seawater for seawater magnesia process. At first, LD slag was milled and classified into 5 grades, that is, (ⅰ)45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ under, (ⅱ)0.25~0.5mm (ⅲ)0.5~1mm(ⅳ)1~2mm, (ⅴ)2.36~3.35mm. These slags were leached in the distilled water. In case of 45${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ under, the pH of the leached solution was over 12. The chemical analysis of leached solution showed that the $Ca^{+}$$^2$was main component and the S $i^{+}$$^4$was very low. On the other hand, the content of S $i^{+}$$^4$in leached solution was decreased with the increase of pH of this solution. The nearly pure calcium solution was made and the ultra high purity MgO could be made with this calcium solution. The leaching behavior of LD slag was different between the fine particle and coarse particle. The calcium was leached by bulk dissolution in the coarse particle and by surface controlled reaction in fine particle. The leaching rate was slow in coarse particle and fast in fine particle. Therefore, the high pH solution, that is, over 12, was obtained in fine particle.cle.e.

The Preparation of Composite Fiber Adsorbents for Separation of Uranium from Seawater by Spinning(1) (방사 방법을 이용한 해수로 부터 우라늄 분리를 위한 복합재료 섬유흡착제의 제조(1))

  • Amidoximated composite fiber adsorbents were prepared for separation of uranium from seawater and characterized by various instrumental techniques, such as IR spectroscopy, CHN elemetal analyzer and SEM. The swelling ratios and yields of the AN-TEGMA and AN-TEGMA-DVB copolymers were decreased with an increase in crosslinklng agents, such as DVB and TEGMA composition. The yield of 85-92% and 82-88% of AN-TEGMA and AN-TEGMA-DVB copolymers respectively were found. The porosity was also decreased with increase in crosslinking compositions, and it was found that the AN-TEGMA-DVB porosity copolymers were smaller than the value of AN-TEGMA copolymer. We investigated that the adsorbent with the composite fiber adsorbents were well dispersed on the surface of Its by SEM. The optimum contents of containing adsorbent in the copolymer was 40 weight percent. The capacity of uraniyl ion through the composite fiber adsorbent containing the amidoxime group was miximized a pH level of 8. Also, if was found that the synthesized composite fiber adsorbent was good material, due to a pH level of 8.3 of seawater, for separation of uraniyl ion from seawater.

  • A coastwise chemical tanker sailing at full speed has capsized during turning in calm water. In the previous paper, we investigated the reasons of the accident by demonstrating the proper correction for the free surface effect of the liquid cargo and the bow-sinkage effect. In this paper, we also carry out model experiments of a transverse pressure under the seawater and an outward heel moment according to the heel angle and rudder angle, on the basis of radius of turning circle, ship's speed and drift angle of model ship occurring in turning. It is also shown that the flooding of seawater onto the deck occurring in turning generated a significant outward heel moment and increased the vertical distance between the center of gravity of the ship and the center of lateral water drag.

Distribution of Dissolved Heavy Metals Released during Stabilizing Processes of Soft Sea-Bottom using Cement Stabilizers (시멘트 고화제 고결공법에 따른 공사장 주변해수의 용존성 중금속 농도 변화)

  • The injection of cement stabilizer is used as one of ways to stabilize soft sea-bottom. However, this method makes an argument for the possibility of releasing heavy metals from the cement stabilizer to the seawater. To investigate the effect of the cement stabilizer on the seawater, field measurements were carried out in Ocheon harbor of the Chunsoo Bay. Although the highest concentrations of dissolved heavy metals were found in the surface seawater of the injection point and the metal concentrations decreased with distances, the levels of heavy metals in all the seawater met the demand of environmental criteria of Korea, US and UK.

  • Microorganisms play a significant role in bioremediation of heavy metal contaminated seawater. In this study, we reported an effective removal of Cu and Zn in marine envionment by using Desulfovibrio desulfuricans (D. desulfuricans) which belong to sulfate reducing bacteria. D. desulfuricans showed stable growth characteristics in high salt concentration and had resistance to heavy metals. Cu and Zn was removed not only by physical adsorption on the surface of bacteria but also by precipitation reaction of microbial metabolism by D. desulfuricans in seawater. In case of different heavy metal concentration, Cu was effectively removed 85% at 25 ppm and 60% at 50 ppm and Zn was effectively removed 54% at 50 ppm and 46% at 200 ppm, respectively.

  • With recent advances in engineering and technology, a damage on industrial machineries performing high-speed and high-power requirements has become a problem. There is an increasing possibility of cavitation damage, especially in pumps, propellers and high-speed vessels in a flowing liquid accordingly. There are several factors affecting cavitation damage on materials, including viscosity, pressure, temperature, amplitude applied. In this study, effects of cavity pressure in seawater on the damage for 5083-O aluminium alloy were evaluated by modulating amplitude. Trend of the damage with respect to time and amplitude was analyzed comparatively, and surface degradation of specimens was investigated by using Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM) and 3D microscope. The result reveals that the amount of the damage increased consistently with the increase in time and amplitude while the plastic deformation zone where no appreciable damage occurred was in less than 30 minutes.

  • The uptake and retention of strontium-90 from seawater by the seaweed Undaria pinnatifda(sea mustard) varied depending on the plant part, exposure time, salinity, contents of stable strontium and calcium, and presence of chelating agent in the seawater. The concentration factors attained at equilibrium were in the range of 50 and it was evident that the bioaccumulation was largely due to the adsorption of the radionuclide on the surface of seaweed.
