The East Sea, a semi-enclosed marginal sea with shallow straits in the northwest Pacific, is marked by the nearly geographic isolation and the low sea surface salinity during the last glacial maximum (LGM). The East Sea might have the only connection to the open ocean through the Korea Strait with a sill depth of 130 m, allowing the paleo-Tsushima Water to enter the sea during the LGM. The low paleosalinity associated with abnormally light $\delta^{18}O$ values of planktonic foraminifera is interpreted to have resulted from river discharge and precipitation. Nevertheless, two LGM features in the East Sea are disputable. This study attempts to estimate volume transport of the paleo-Tsushima Water via the Korea Strait and further examines its effect on the low sea surface salinity (SSS) during the lowest sea level of the LGM. The East Sea was not completely isolated, but partially linked to the northern East China Sea through the Korea Strait during the LGM. The volume transport of the paleo-Tsushima Water during the LGM is calculated approximately$(0.5\~2.1)\times10^{12}m^3/yr$ on the basis of the selected seismic reflection profiles along with bathymetry and current data. The annual influx of the paleo-Tsushima Water is low, compared to the 100 m-thick surface water volume $(about\;79.75\times10^{12}m^3)$ in the East Sea. The paleo-Tsushima Water influx might have changed the surface water properties within a geologically short time, potentially decreasing sea surface salinity. However, the effect of volume transport on the low sea surface salinity essentially depends on freshwater amounts within the paleo-Tsushima Water and excessive evaporation during the glacial lowstands of sea level. Even though the paleo-Tsushima Water is assumed to have been entirely freshwater at that time period, it would annually reduce only about 1‰ of salinity in the surface water of the East Sea. Thus, the paleo-Tsushima Water influx itself might not be large enough to significantly reduce the paleosalinity of about 100 m-thick surface layer during the LGM. This further suggests contribution of additional river discharges from nearby fluvial systems (e.g. the Amur River) to freshen the surface water.

Oceanographic observation and qualitative analysis for deep ocean water in the East Sea were carried out from January 2003 to January 2004, in order to understand the characteristics of deep sea water in the East Sea. Temporal and spatial variation of water masses were discussed from survey of the study area including the coastal sea of Kwangwon province in where the polar front mixing cold and warm water masses were formed. On the basis of the vertical profiles of temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen, water masses in the study area were divided into 5 major groups; (1) Low Saline Surface Water (LSSW) (2) Tsushima Surface water (TSW) (3) Tsushima Middle Water (TMW) (4) North Korea Cold Water (NKCW) and (5) East Sea Proper Water (ESPW). In winter, surface water in coastal sea of Kwangwaan Kosung region were dominated by North Korean Cold Water (NKCW). As Tsushima warm current were enforced in summer, various water masses were vertically emerged in study area, in order of TSW, TMW, NKCW and ESPW. It is highly possible that the LSSW which occurred at surface water of september is originated from influx of fresh water due to the seasonal rainy spell. Nevertheless water masses existed within surface water were seasonally varied, water quality characteristics of East Sea Proper Water (ESPW) under 300 m did not changed all the seasons of the year.
The characteristics of surface circulation in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea are discussed by analyzing a great deal of current data observed by 142 sets of mooring buoy and 58 sets of drifters trajectories collected in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea through domestic and abroad measurements. Some major features are demonstrated as bellow: 1) Tsushima Warm Current flows away from the Kuroshio and has multiple sources in warm half year and comes only from Kuroshio surface water in cold half year. 2) Taiwan Warm Current comes mainly from the Taiwan Strait Water in warm half year and comes from the intruded Kuroshio surface water and branches near 27N in cold half year. 3) The Changjiang Diluted Water turns towards Cheju Island in summer and flows southward along the coastal line in winter. 4) The study sea area is an eddy developing area, especially in the southern area of Cheju Island and northern area of Taiwan.
This study surveys the surface water environment in Southwest sea areas of Vietnam in order to evaluate the current environment. It collects and analyzes experimental results of programs, scientific subjects, and international projects relevant to ecological areas and coastlines of Kien Giang province. The methods analyzed and discussed by specialists are evaluated according to pollution coefficients established by the World Health Organization (WHO), sampling methods, and case study analyses. Comparison between the scale of pollution levels and the surface water quality in experimental areas of Long Xuyen Quadrangle shows a light-moderate pollution level. In Ca Mau Peninsula, the surface water source is only slightly polluted. Sea areas and islands are also light-moderately polluted. Computing results from water quality indices (WQI) show the level of pollution in experimental sites. Activities such as constructing infrastructures for tourism, exploiting minerals, and increasing population accelerate environmental pollution by deteriorating inherently sensitive ecosystems like corals, sea grass, mangrove swamps, and Melaleuca forests. Surveying and evaluating the present situation of surface water are fundamental solutions for environmental protection in the Southwest sea areas of Vietnam.
To find effective way of the production of distilled water for drought and flood with solar radiation, three boxes were made same base each 1000mm ${\times} $1000mm and tops are 45 degree. Individual boxes contained the sea water, rain water and surface water were placed at the same location and same time. Condensation of each box has been compared. On clear day production of distilled water in the box with sea water was 36% and 32% less than boxes with rain water and surface water. The maximum condensation reached when the temperature of the top and bottom parts are equal. As concentration of sea water increased production of distilled water was decreased. In the box with sea water, the surface temperature was lower than 3cm below the surface. Optimum collector area for producing distilled water 2000ml of these three boxes were $3.75m^2$
Sea ices at the Tatarskiy Straitin the East/Japan Sea appear from November to April. Cold and fresh water, melted from the sea ices, may contain nutrients which are indispensable to spring bloom of phytoplankton and may provide a preferable condition to the spring bloom through changes in vertical structure of water column and stratification. Relation between the spring bloom along the Primorye coast and sea ices in the Tatarskiy Strait were investigated using multi-satellite multi-sensor data; ten-year SeaWiFS chlorophyll-a concentration data and PAR data, sea surface temperatures from NOAA/AVHRR, sea ice concentration and near-surface wind speed data from DMSP/SSMI, near-surface wind vectors from QuikSCAT, and others. We provided evidences of southwestward flowing cold water masses from sea ice and its relation of chlorophyll-a concentration. This study showed that year-to-year variations of chlorophyll-a concentration in spring were positively correlated with those of sea ice concentrations at the Tatarskiy Strait.
Cold water observed at sea surface near the southeastern coast of Korea in summers 1982 and 1983 was studied by using data of hydrography, sea level, wind and satellite image. In summer season when water column shows 3-layered structure a "full" upwelling occurs by southwesterly transient wind continuing for several days. During upwelling event, surface water of high temperature moved offshore, middle water of low temperature outcropped to the sea surface, and sea level was lowered, however, equilibrium depth of surface layer was not changed. It may be concluded that cold water at the surface originates from middle layer and strong surface front is a result of surfacing of seasonal thermocline. In order to see the relationship between position of surface front and wind input, a model of Csanady (1982) was applied in a rigid lid approximation. The results show that frontal position can be determined by wind input and water structure near the southeastern coast of Korea. Cold water in summer can appear at the sea surface only when there is wind larger than a minimum wind impulse of order $10m^2/sec$.
Assuming that summer surface waters in the South Sea (northern East China Sea) are formed mostly by a mixing of three source water (Changjiang Discharge Water; Kuroshio Water and Yellow Sea Surface Water) we apply optimum multiparameter (OMP) analysis to calculate the mixing ratio of each source water to a given surface water. Since OMP requires more parameters than the number of water types (three in this study), we utilize two radium isotopes of dissolved $^{226}Ra\;and\;^{228}Ra$ along with temperature and salinity. Parameter values of each source water are deduced from in situ and historical data. Results with three source of waters on the surface waters are quite promising with less than $1\%$ of unanswered portions. Results not only reproduce the measured temperature and salinity faithfully but also discern the water masses of similar T and S according to their source water mixing. Extending OMP analysis to a whole water column obviously requires more parameters because more source waters are involved in the water mass formation. Original OMP routine utilized dissolved oxygen and nutrients. However, they seem to be perturbed too much by biological activities in the case of shallow waters. We discussed the use of other potential parameters. Also the benefit of parameter substitution is briefly introduced for the future OMP application on shallow waters.
Marine environmental characteristics on the dinoflagellate cysts distribution in surface sediment of the southwest sea of Korea were investigated from 21 stations in September 2003, and 36 stations in June, 2004. The water mass characteristics indicated that the southwest sea of Korea is characterized by various oceanographic conditions due to coastal waters of Korea and China. The Tsushima warm currents and the cold bottom water of the Yellow Sea. Mud contents and chlorophyll a concentrations were higher in central region such as, Namhaedo, Yeosu and Goheung coast than in western region such as, Wando, Haenam and Jindo coast in the South Sea of Korea. A total of 35 taxa of dinoflagellate cysts were identified representing 21 genera, 33 species, 2 unidentified species. Cyst abundance ranged from 13 to 527 cysts $g-dry^{-1}$, showing higher abundance in the coastal areas than in western region of the South Sea of Korea. From the result of the PCA analysis, the distribution of dinoflagellate cysts was not only related to the different water masses which appeared in the southwestern sea but also to physical and biological parameters such as water temperature, light, surface sediment faces and phytoplankton biomass.
To retrieve Sea Surface Temperature(SST) from NOAA-AVHRR imagery the spilt window atmospheric correction algorithm is generally used. Recently, there have been various new algorithms developed to process these data, namely the variable-coefficient split-window, the R54 transmittance-ratio method, fixed-coefficient nonlinear algorithm, dynamic water vapour (DWV) correction method, Dynamic Water Vapour and Temperature algorithm (DWVT). We used MCSST (Multi-Channel Sea surface temperature) and NLSST(Non linear sea surface temperature) algorithms in this study. The study area is around the Korea sea area (Yellow Sea). We compared and analyzed with various methods by applying each Ocean in-situ data and satellite data. The primary aim of study is to verify and optimize algorithms. Finally, this study proposes an optimized algorithm for SST retrieval.
