PURPOSES: This study suggests a specific methodology for the prediction of road surface temperature using vehicular ambient temperature sensors. In addition, four kind of models is developed based on machine learning algorithms. METHODS : Thermal Mapping System is employed to collect road surface and vehicular ambient temperature data on the defined survey route in 2015 and 2016 year, respectively. For modelling, all types of collected temperature data should be classified into response and predictor before applying a machine learning tool such as MATLAB. In this study, collected road surface temperature are considered as response while vehicular ambient temperatures defied as predictor. Through data learning using machine learning tool, models were developed and finally compared predicted and actual temperature based on average absolute error. RESULTS : According to comparison results, model enables to estimate actual road surface temperature variation pattern along the roads very well. Model III is slightly better than the rest of models in terms of estimation performance. CONCLUSIONS : When correlation between response and predictor is high, when plenty of historical data exists, and when a lot of predictors are available, estimation performance of would be much better.

PURPOSES : This study develops various models that can estimate the pattern of road surface temperature changes using machine learning methods. METHODS : Both a thermal mapping system and weather forecast information were employed in order to collect data for developing the models. In previous studies, the authors defined road surface temperature data as a response, while vehicular ambient temperature, air temperature, and humidity were considered as predictors. In this research, two additional factors-road type and weather forecasts-were considered for the estimation of the road surface temperature change pattern. Finally, a total of six models for estimating the pattern of road surface temperature changes were developed using the MATLAB program, which provides the classification learner as a machine learning tool. RESULTS : Model 5 was considered the most superior owing to its high accuracy. It was seen that the accuracy of the model could increase when weather forecasts (e.g., Sky Status) were applied. A comparison between Models 4 and 5 showed that the influence of humidity on road surface temperature changes is negligible. CONCLUSIONS : Even though Models 4, 5, and 6 demonstrated the same performance in terms of average absolute error (AAE), Model 5 can be considered the optimal one from the point of view of accuracy.
The present work is an attempt to develop a simple and accurate finite element formulation for the assessment of thermal shock/thermally induced vibrations in pretwisted and tapered functionally graded material thin (FGM) blades obtained from Voigt and local representative volume elements (LRVE) homogenization models, based on neutral surface approach. The neutral surface of the FGM blade does not coincide with its mid-surface. A finite element model (FEM) is developed using first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the FGM turbine blade is modelled according to the shallow shell theory. The top and the bottom layers of the FGM blade are made of pure ceramic and pure metal, respectively and temperature-dependent material properties are functionally graded in the thickness direction, the position of the neutral surface also depends on the temperature. The material properties are estimated according to two different homogenization models viz., Voigt or LRVE. The top layer of the FGM blade is subjected to high temperature and the bottom surface is either thermally insulated or kept at room temperature. The solution of the nonlinear profile of the temperature in the thickness direction is obtained from the Fourier law of heat conduction in the unsteady state. The results obtained from the present FEM are compared with the benchmark examples. Next, the effect of angle of twist, intensity of thermal shock, variable chord and span and volume fraction index on the transient response due to thermal shock obtained from the two homogenization models viz., Voigt and LRVE scheme is investigated. It is shown that there can be a significant difference in the transient response calculated by the two homogenization models for a particular set of material and geometric parameters.

Background: The present study optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions to maximize extraction yields of glycyrrhizic acid from licorice. Methods: The optimal extraction temperature ($X_1$), extraction time ($X_2$), and methanol concentration ($X_3$) were identified using response surface methodology (RSM). A central composite design (CCD) was used for experimental design and analysis of the results to obtain the optimal processing parameters. Results: Statistical analyses revealed that three variables and the quadratic of $X_1$, $X_2$, and $X_3$ had significant effects on the yields and were followed by significant interaction effects between the variables of $X_2$ and $X_3$ (p<0.01). A 3D response surface plot and contour plots derived from the mathematical models were applied to determine the optimal conditions. The optimum ultrasound-assisted extraction conditions were as follows: extraction temperature, $69^{\circ}C$; extraction time, 34?min; and methanol concentration, 57%. Under these conditions, the experimental yield of glycyrrhizic acid was 3.414%, which agreed closely with the predicted value (3.406%). Conclusion: The experimental values agreed with those predicted by RSM models, thus indicating the suitability of the model employed and the success of RSM in optimizing the extraction conditions.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the effect of quartz powder (Qp), quartz sand (Qs), and different water curing temperature on mechanical properties including 7, 14, 28-day compressive strength and 28-day splitting tensile strength of Ultra High Performance Concrete and also finding the correlation between these variables on mechanical properties of UHPC. The response surface methodology was monitored to show the influences of variables and their interactions on mechanical properties of UHPC, then, mathematical models in terms of coded variables were established by ANOVA. The offered models are valid for the variables between: quartz powder 0 to 20% of cement substitution by cement weight, quartz sand 0 to 50% of aggregate substitution by crushed limestone weight, and water curing temperature 25 to $95^{\circ}C$.
A three variables by three level factorial design and response surface methodology were used to determine optimum conditions for osmotic dehydration of banana. The moisture loss, solid gain, weight loss and reduction of moisture content after osmotic dehydration were increased as temperature, sugar concentration and immersion time increased. The effect of concentration was more significant than those of temperature and time on mass transfer. Color difference and titratable acidity were decreased by higher concentration. Sweetness was increased by increasing sugar concentration, temperature, immersion time during osmotic dehydration. The regression models showed a significant lack of fit (p>0.5) and were highly significant with satisfying values of R2. To optimize osmotic dehydration, based on surface response and contour plots, superimposing the individual contour plots for the response variables. the optimum conditions for this process wire 26$^{\circ}C$, 44 $^{\circ}$brix and 2 hrs for moisture content, sweetness and color difference are less than 72%, 24 obrix and 10 degree.

The purpose of this paper is to propose basic data on convection heat-transfer coefficients in Ondol-heated room. Surface temperatures and several temperatures around each inside surface of wall, floor and ceiling composed of heating room are measured vertically in Ondol-heated model rooms, and the vertical temperature profiles could be expressed by nonlinear equation models. Also, the convection heat transfer phenomena are analysed from the nonlinear equation models. In the results, the convection heat-transfer coefficients of Ondol heated space are suggested by the term of temperature difference between each wall surface and room air temperature and by the relationship between Nusselt number and Rayleigh number of dimensionless numbers.
To produce expanded, minimally hard extrudates from blends of raw pork meat (20%), defatted soy flour (25%), and corn starch using a single-screw extruder, various combinations of feed moisture, process temperature, and screw speed were evaluated. First series of extrusion runs were conducted according to a central composite rotatable design/response surface methodology (RSM). Upon assessing the full model for each response, insignificant terms were eliminated to determine final response surface models. Screw speed within the range evaluated was found to have no significant effect on expansion ratio (ER) or shear force (SF) of extrudates. Since examinations of the response surfaces and their generated grids of predicted values indicated that maximum ER and minimum SF were likely to be attained with a moisture-temperature combination outside the RSM experimental range, the second series of extrusion runs were conducted with several selected combinations of moisture and temperature to determine a practical optimum extrusion condition. The combination of 22.78% feed moisture, 16$0^{\circ}C$ process temperature, and 170 rpm screw speed was chosen as such a condition, and used in the final extrusion. The final product required less force to break than did commercial pretzel sticks.
The experimental design methodology was applied in the real scale coal-fired boiler to predict the various combustion properties according to the operating conditions and to assess the coal plant safety. Response surface method (RSM) was introduced as a design of experiment, and the database for RSM was provided with the numerical simulation of the coal-fired boiler. The three independent variables, high heating value of coal (HHV), overall stoichiometry excess air ratio (OST), and burner-side stoichiometry excess air ratio (BST), were set to characterize the cross section averaged NOx concentration and temperature distribution. The maximum NOx concentration was predicted accurately and mainly controlled by BST in the boiler. The parabola function was assumed for the zone averaged peak temperature distribution, and the prediction was in a fairly good agreement with the experiments except downstream. Also, the location of the peak temperature was compared with that of maximum NOx, which implies that thermal NOx formation is the main mechanism in the coal-fired boiler. These results promise the wide use of statistical models for the fast prediction and safety assessment.

The optimum alkali pretreatment parameters (reaction time, reaction temperature and potassium hydroxide concentration) for facilitate the conversion into fermentable sugar (glucose) from steam exploded (severity log Ro 2.45) barley husk were determined using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a factorial Central Composite Design (CCD). The prediction of the response was carried out by a second-order polynomial model and regression analysis revealed that more than 88% of the variation can be explained by the models. The optimum conditions for maximum cellulose content were determined to be 201 min reaction time, $124^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature and 0.9% potassium hydroxide concentration. This data shows that the actual value obtained was similar to the predicted value calculated from the model. The pretreated barley husk using acid hydrolysis resulted in a glucose conversion of 94.6%. This research of steam explosion and alkali pretreatment was a promising method to improve cellulose-rich residue for lignocellulosic biomass.
