The objective of this research is to develop a measurement error model for sculptured surface in On-Machine Measurement(OMM) process based on a closed-loop configuration. The geometric error model of each axis of a vertical CNC machining center is derived using a 4$\times$4 homogeneous transformation matrix. The ideal locations of a touch-type probe for the sculptured surface measurement are calculated from the parametric surface representation and X-, Y- directional geometric errors of the machine. Also the actual coordinates of the probe are calculated by considering the pre-travel variation of a probe and Z-directional geometric errors. Then, the step-by-sep measurement error analysis method is suggested based on a closed-loop configuration of the machining center including workpiece and probe errors. The simulation study shows the simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed error modeling strategy.
In order to study cortical properties in human, it is necessary to obtain an accurate and explicit representation of the cortical surface in individual subjects. Among many approaches, surface-based method that reconstructs a 3-D model from contour lines on cross-section images is widely used. The conventional method detects match points of contours using the minimum straight distance between any pair of contour points which lie on different contours. Then, it generates a triangle strip. In general, however, it might yield small mismatches between contours in case of brain due to complex anatomical structures. In this paper, therefore, we present an improved method for tilting operation that uses the curvature values calculated from surface information. The usefulness of the proposed method has been verified using brain image.

Gouge-free tool-path generation is an important issue in mold & die machining and researches on cutter interference avoidance can be found in many articles. One of the various methods is construction of tool-offlet surface or cutter-location (CL) surface on which the cutter-center point (CL-point) locates. Provided that the CL surface is represented in a suitable form, cutter-interference avoidance can be performed without the burden of computing CL data for every cutter-contact (CC) point. In the paper, various methods of constructing a CL surface in the z-map form are presented, where z-map is a special form of discrete nonparametric representation in which the height values at grid points on the xy-plane are stored as a 2D array z[i,j].

Approximate lofting or skinning is one of practical surface modeling techniques well used in CAD and reverse engineering applications. Presented in this paper is a method for approximately lofting a given set of curves wihin a specified tolereance. It is based on refitting input curves simultaneously on a common knot vector and interpolating them to get a resultant NURBS surface. A concept of reducing the number of interior knots of the common knot vector is well adopted to acquire more compact representation for the resultant surface. Energy minimization is newly introduced in curve refitting process to stabilize the solution of the fitting problem and get more fair curve. The proposed approximate lofting provides more smooth surface models and realizes more efficient data reduction expecially when the parameterization and compatibility of input curves are not good enough. The method has been successfully implemented in a new CAD/CAM product VX Vision? of Varimetrix Corporation.
This paper presents the representation and its shape analysis of face by features based on surface curvature estimation and proposed rotation vector of the human face. Curvature-based surface features are well suited to use for experimenting the 3D human face segmentation. Human surfaces are exactly extracted and computed with parameters and rotated by using active surface mesh model. The estimated features were tested and segmented by reconstructing surfaces from the face surface and analytically computing Gaussian (K) and mean (H) curvatures without threshold.

This paper presents an efficient and robust algorithm to compute the isophote of a surface of revolution. A surface of revolution can be decomposed to a set of cross-sectional circles. The surface normals along each cross-sectional circle form a cone. Using the characteristics of the normal vectors and the symmetric property of the surface of revolution, we propose a method to find the connected components of an isophote, which requires intersecting a planar curve(and its reflection) with two rays. Moreover, we propose a closed-form representation of an isophote as a parametric curve.

The lubrication state between contacting bodies with rolling and sliding under loaded condition is generally understood by the conception shown in Figure 1. When the lubricating oil film formation between facing bodies is good enough to separate these bodies by the hydrodynamic pressure, this state is called by the expression of "hydrodynamic lubrication". The thickness of oil film is so large that the lubricating oil between facing bodies behaves as fluid and metal-to-metal contact between surface roughness asperities on facing bodies does not occur. When the oil film thickness becomes thinner or when the surface roughness height becomes larger, top of surface roughness asperities on facing bodies reaches very near to each other and there the oil or absorbed oil molecules on the surface of facing bodies behave no more as fluid. Partly metal-to-metal contact of surface roughness asperities occurs. Such lubrication state is called by the expression "mixed-lubrication". When the oil film thickness becomes more thinner or surface roughness height becomes larger, metal-tometal contact or contact via absorbed oil molecules dominate at most of the part in contact zone. Such state is called by the expression "boundary lubrication". Schematic representation of these three regimes of lubrication is shown in Figure 1.rication is shown in Figure 1.

This study aims to inspect changes of physical expression in surfaces of both building interior and exterior in contemporary architecture. Nowadays society has transformed into more complicated framework with the development of the new media and digital technology in 21 century. Surface's expressivity has been changed with design trend and material development. Although surface study has been mainly concentrated on properties of materials and structure characters, new technology and cultural acceptance enables it extend itself to a new area with various design methods, taking its place as an important contemporary architectural element. Interior surface design is expressed with several unique methods such as optical illusion, surface exposure and spacial depth and volume, and it created dynamic space within the surface itself. In case of exterior surface, whole space seems to be designed to be coordinated with structured optical illusion as well as symbolic expression. Surface's area is extends itself with the stream of the times. This study explored the nature of surfaces with categorizing and comparing them in a various views and methods.

This paper addresses the problem of B-spline surface interpolation to serial contours, where the number of points varies from contour to contour. A traditional lofting approach creates a set of B-spline curves via B-spline curve interpolation to each contour, makes them compatible via degree elevation and knot insertion, and performs B-spline surface lofting to get a B-spline surface interpolating them. The approach tends to result in an astonishing number of control points in the resulting B-spline surface. This situation arises mainly from the inevitable process of progressively merging different knot vectors to make the B-spline curves compatible. This paper presents a new approach for avoiding this troublesome situation. The approach includes a novel process of getting a set of compatible B-spline curves from the given contours. The process is based on the universal parameterization [1,2] allowing the knots to be selected freely but leading to a more stable linear system for B-spline curve interpolation. Since the number of control points in each compatible B-spline curve is equal to the highest number of contour points, the proposed approach can realize efficient data reduction and provide a compact representation of a B-spline surface while keeping the desired surface shape. Some experimental results demonstrate its usefulness and quality.
