Purpose: Respiratory is an essential vital component for conservation of life in human, which is controlled by respiratory muscles and its related neuromuscular regulation. The purpose of this study is to assess lung capacity and respiratory pressure in healthy children, and to investigate relationship and predictability between respiratory pressure and other related respiratory functions. Methods: A total of 31 healthy children were recruited for this study. Demographic information and respiratory related factors were assessed in terms of body surface area (BSA), chest mobility, lung capacity, and respiratory pressure. Correlation between respiratory pressure and the rested variables was analyzed, and multiple regression using the stepwise method was performed for prediction of respiratory muscle strength, in terms of respiratory pressure as the dependent variable, and demographic and other respiratory variables as the independent variable. Results: According to the results of correlation analysis, respiratory pressure showed significant correlation with age (r=0.62, p<0.01), BSA (r=0.80, p<0.01), FVC (r=0.80, p<0.01), and FEV1 (r=0.70, p<0.01). In results of multiple regression analysis using the backward elimination method, BSA and FVC were included as significant factors of the predictable statistical model. The statistical model showed a significant explanation power of 71.8%. Conclusion: These findings suggest that respiratory pressure could be a valuable measurement tool for evaluation of respiratory function, because of significant relationship with physical characteristics and lung capacity, and that BSA and FVC could be possible predictable factors to explain the degree of respiratory pressure. These findings will provide useful information for clinical assessment and treatment in healthy children as well as those with pulmonary disease.
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of trunk-forearm supported sitting on trunk flexion angle, trunk extensor fatigue and seat contact pressure. Background: The relationship between sitting posture and musculoskeletal disorders of the trunk extensor fatigue and seat contact pressure has been documented. The trunk-forearm support type ergonomic chair was devised from the fact that trunk-forearm support has been reported to reduce trunk extensor activity and discomfort. Method: Using three different sitting postures, upright ($P_1$), trunk-forearm supported ($P_2$) and normal sitting ($P_3$), six healthy subjects participated in the study. Motion capture system was used to collect head and trunk flexion angle, and surface electromyography (sEMG) was used to collect myoelectric signal of upper trapezius, lower trapezius, erector spinae, multifidus, and pressure mat system was used to measure seat contact pressure. Results: When trunk and forearm were supported by the ergonomic chair, higher head flexion angle showed upright > trunk-forearm supported > normal in order, and muscle fatigue showed less than upright and normal sitting. Mean seat contact pressure decreased 19% than upright sitting. But muscle fatigue was not affected by each condition. Conclusion: Trunk-forearm supported sitting of the ergonomic chair showed positive effect in respect of trunk and head flexion angle, trunk extensor fatigue, seat contact pressure. To acquire comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of the ergonomic chair, further studies such as anatomical effects from measurement of external applied loading effect to the body from interface pressure analysis are required. Application: The results of the publishing trend analysis might help physiological effects of trunk-forearm support type chair.
It is important to decide the minimum film thickness and viscosity variations of a multigrade lubricant in the contact surface under the high pressure conditions. By carrying out acceleration, deceleration, and various sliding-rolling ratio movement between two contact bodies, it is experimented that film formation variations in the contact surface are captured with multigrade lubricants in order to exactly investigate the variations of film formations. Optical interference images are continuously captured with high resolution CCD camera during the captured period of acceleration, deceleration. The friction forces between the contacting bodies are also measured simultaneously with the film formation.
Maximum allowable PV values of oilless composite bearing materials (70% epoxy-resin/30% Graphite) were measured and compared at various types of test rigs that have different contact geometry and the operating conditions. Test results showed that material failure was mainly characterized by the sharp increase in both coefficient of friction and surface temperature, and different PV values were measured under different Contact geometry. The discrepancy in measurement of PV values was analyzed in the light of theoretical frictional heating analysis. Results show that surface temperature rise depends on its contact geometry, and PV values could be overestimated in the testing conditions of high sliding velocity. Test data of different contact geometry were normalized by using a normalized contact pressure and sliding velocity; it showed a good correlation. This work suggests that normalized PV values could be more effective in evaluating bearing materials than conventional PV values for a design parameter of journal bearings.
It is well known that acoustic signals, even measured in an anechoic chamber, can be contaminated due to the wall interference. Therefore, it is necessary to reconstruct the original signal from the measured data, which is very critical for the case of measurement of source signal in a water tunnel. In this thesis, new methods for the reconstruction of sound sources are proposed and validated by using Boundary Element Method from measured data in a closed space. The inverse Helmholtz integral equation and its normal derivative are used for the reconstruction of sound sources in a closed space. An arbitrary Kirchhoff surface over the sources is proposed to solve the surface information instead of direct solution for the source. Although sound sources are not directly known by the inverse Helmholtz equation, the original sound source of pressure-field outside of the wall can be indirectly obtained by using this new method.
For examining friction-factor characteristics of round-hole pattern surfaces which are usually applied on damper seals, flat plate test apparatus is designed and fabricated. The measurement method of leakage and pressure distribution along round-hole pattern specimen with different hole area is described and a method for determining the Fanning friction factor is discussed. Results show that the round-hole pattern surfaces provide a much larger friction factor than smooth surface, and the friction factor vs. clearance behavior yields that the friction factor generally decreases as the clearance increases unlike the results of Nava's flat plate test. As the hole depth is decreased, the friction factor is increased, and maximum friction factor is obtained for 50% of hole area. Since the present experimental friction factor results show coincident characteristics with Moody's friction factor model, empirical friction factors for round-hole pattern surfaces are obtained by using the Moody's formula based on curve-fit of the experimental data. Results of Villasmil's 2D CFD simulation support the present experimental test result.
The gear system is commonly applied in the marine propulsion shafting system using the diesel engine with the power take off/in system and it also is necessary to reduce propeller revolution increasing the propulsion efficiency. The diesel engine has the advantage more than other thermal engines in high thermal efficiency and mobility. But the large vibratory torque which induced by higher combustion pressure is transmitted to these gears. In this paper, the surface durability and bending stress of gear system considering vibratory and transient torque is evaluated by ISO and AGMA regulation. And the influence of these in gear design is investigated with the theoretical analysis and onboard measurement result of torsional vibration.

Recently, nonthermal bioplasma has been attracted by researchers due to their potentials to modulate cellular functions resulting in changes of biomolecular electron band structures as well as cell morphologies. We have investigated the secondary electron emission characteristics from the surface of the erythrocyte, i.e., red blood cell (RBC) with and without the nonthermal bioplasma treatment in morphological and biomolecular aspects. The morphologies have been controlled by osmotic pressure and biomolecular structures were changed by well known reactive oxygen species. Ion-induced secondary electron emission coefficient have been measured by using gamma-focused ion beam (${\gamma}$-FIB) system, based on the quantum mechanical Auger neutralization theory. Our result suggests that the nonthermal bioplasma treatment on biological cells could result in change of the secondary electron emission coefficient characterizing the biomolecular valence band electron energy structures caused by the cell morphologies as well as its surface charge distributions.
This paper shows the use of wavelet transformation combined with inverse acoustics to reconstruct the surface velocity of a noise source. This approach uses the boundary element analysis based on the measured sound pressure at a set of field points, the Helmholtz integral equations and wavelet transformation for reconstructing the normal surface velocity field. The reconstructed field can be diverged due to the small measurement errors in the case of nearfield acoustic holography (NAH) using an inverse boundary element method. In order to avoid this instability in the inverse problem, the reconstruction process should include some form of regularization for enhancing the resolution of source images. The usual method of regularization has been the truncation of wave vectors associated with small singular values, although the order of an optimal truncation is difficult to determine. In this paper, a wavelet transformation is applied to reduce the computation time for inverse acoustics and to enhance the reconstructed vibration field. The computational speed-up is achieved, with solution time being reduced to $14.5\%$.
