  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the compensation effect of exposure duration increase to decreased light intensity of visible-light curing unit. The specimen with 2mm thickness was made of Restorative $Z-100^{TM}$ (A2 shade, 3M Dental Products, U.S.A.) and cured with $Optilux^{TM}$ (Demetron Research Co. U.S.A.). The light intensity was controlled to 420 $mW/cm^2$, 540 $mW/cm^2$, 630 $mW/cm^2$ and curing time, also, controlled to 40, 60, 80 seconds. Cured specimen was stored in a light-proof container for 24 hours to post-irradation was completed. Microhardness of top and bottom surface of specimen were measured to evaluate the depth of cure. The obtained results were as follows: 1. The microhardness of top and bottom surface of the composite resin specimen was increased significantly as light intensity and exposure time was increased (P<0.01). 2. Light intensity was more correlated with bottom microhardness(${\gamma}{\geq}$0.438) than top microhardness(${\gamma}{\geq}$0.213), and exposure time was more correlated with top microhardness (${\gamma}{\geq}$0.424) than bottom microhardness(${\gamma}{\geq}$0.335). 3. The regressive equation was obtained in this study as follows : $H=0.07{\times}D+0.012{\times}I+76$ (H : Microhardness(KHN), D : Exposure time, I : Light intensity)

  • The objectives of this study was to evaluate current visible light curing units regarding microhardness and microleakage. Fourty samples of composite resin(Z-250, 3M) were cured by different light curing units (Flipo, LOKKI; Credi II, 3M; XL 3000, 3M: Optilux 500, Demetron) in acrylic blocks. Microhardness was measured using a calibrated Vickers indenter on both top and bottom surfaces after 24 hours of storage in air at room temperature. Class V cavities were prepared on buccal and lingual surfaces of fourty extracted human molars. Each margin was on enamel and dentin/cementum. Composite resin(Z-250, 3M) was filled in cavities and cured by four different light curing units (Flipo, LOKKl; Credi II, 3M; XL 3000, 3M: Optilux 500, Demetron). The results of this syudy were as follows: Microhardness 1. Flipo showed low microhardness compared to Optilux 500, Credi II significantly in upper surface. Flipo didn't show a significant difference compared to XL 3000. 2. The microhardness resulting from curing with Flipo was lower than that of others on lower surfaces. Microleakage 1. Dentin margin showed significantly high dye penetration rate than enamel margin in all groups(p<0.05). 2. No significant differences were found on both enamel and dentin margin regarding curing units.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the microhardness and the fluoride content of enamel and dentin around fluoride- or non fluoride-containing restorations. Forty extracted human teeth were used and prepared cervical cavities on proximal surface. Experimental teeth were divided into five groups . Group 1 : Prime & Bond NT and Z100, Group 2 Prime & Bond NT and F2000, Group 3 : Scotchbond Multi-purpose and Z100, Group 4 : Scothcbond Multi-purpose and F2000, Group 5 : Fuji II LC. The cavities were filled with dentin adhesives and restorative materials. After each tooth was bisected, one half was tested microharaness and the other half was analyzed the fluoride at the enamel and dentin by an EPMA-WDX device. The results were as follows; 1. There was no statistical difference among the microhardness of enamel surface in all group. 2. The microhardness at dentin of $100{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ point in Group 2 and $20{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ point in Grocup 4 was lower than that of normal dentin (p>0.05). 3. There was no statistical difference among the fluoride content of enamel surface in all group. 4. The fluoride content at the dentin of $30{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ point in Group 2 and 5 were higher than those at $100{\;}\mu\textrm{m}{\;}and{\;}200{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ point in Group 2 and normal dentin (p<0.05). 5. At the dentin of $30{\;}\mu\textrm{m}$ point, Group 2 showed higher fluoride content than Group 1 and 3, and Group 5 showed higher fluoride content than other groups.

  • Background: In this study, four types of effervescent vitamins marketed in Korea were analyzed for their acidity and vitamin content. For this purpose, bovine teeth were immersed in vitamin, and surface microhardness and appearance were measured before and after immersion to evaluate tooth demineralization and erosion. Methods: Bovine permanent incisors with sound surface enamel were cut to 5×5 mm size, embedded in acrylic resin, and polished using a polishing machine with Sic-paper. The prepared samples were analyzed for pH, vitamin content, and surface hardness before and after immersion using a surface microhardness meter. Demineralization of surface dental enamel was observed using a scanning electron microscope. Results: The average pH of the four effervescent vitamins was less than 5.5; the pH of the positive control Oronamin C was the lowest at 2.76, while that of the negative control Samdasoo was the highest at 6.86. The vitamin content was highest in Berocca and lowest in the DM company Multivitamin. On surface microhardness analysis, surface hardness values of all enamel samples were found to be decreased significantly after 1 and 10 minutes of immersion (p<0.05). After 10 minutes of immersion, there was a significant difference in the decrease in hardness between the experimental groups (p<0.05). Scanning electron microscopy observation showed that dental enamel demineralization after 10 minutes of immersion was the most severe in Oronamin C except for Samdasoo, followed by DM company Multivitamin and VitaHEIM. Immersion in BeroNew and Berocca resulted in similar effects. Conclusion: There is a risk of tooth erosion due to decreased tooth surface microhardness when using the four types of effervescent vitamins and vitamin carbonated beverages with pH below 5.5. Therefore, high pH vitamin supplements are recommended to prevent tooth erosion.

  • Nanocomposites consisting of a nanocrystalline brass matrix (grain size ; 20-100nm) with sub-micron sized Al2O3 particles (60-200nm) were prepared by pulsed current electrodeposition. The microhardness of the nanocomposite with a grain size of 90-100nm was approximately 1.7 times higher than that of a comparable electrodeposit with no particles. However, significant variations in microhardness were not observed between the nanocomposites with grain sizes of 20 nm and the comparable electrodeposit.

  • Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of whitening mouth rinses alone and in combination with conventional whitening treatments on color, microhardness, and surface roughness changes in enamel specimens. Materials and Methods: A total of 108 enamel specimens were collected from human third molars and divided into 9 groups (n = 12): 38% hydrogen peroxide (HP), 10% carbamide peroxide (CP), 38% HP + Listerine Whitening (LW), 10% CP + LW, 38% HP + Colgate Plax Whitening (CPW), 10% CP + CPW, LW, CPW, and the control group (CG). The initial color of the specimens was measured, followed by microhardness and roughness tests. Next, the samples were bleached, and their color, microhardness, and roughness were assessed. Data were analyzed through 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA; microhardness and roughness) and 1-way ANOVA (color change), followed by the Tukey post hoc test. The Dunnett test was used to compare the roughness and microhardness data of the CG to those of the treated groups. Results: Statistically significant color change was observed in all groups compared to the CG. All groups, except the LW group, showed statistically significant decreases in microhardness. Roughness showed a statistically significant increase after the treatments, except for the 38% HP group. Conclusions: Whitening mouth rinses led to a whitening effect when they were used after conventional treatments; however, this process caused major changes on the surface of the enamel specimens.

  • Ni-$TiO_2$ nano composite coatings were fabricated using pulse current electrodeposition technique at 100 Hz pulse frequency with a constant 50% pulse duty cycles and reference was taken with respect to the direct current (dc) electrodeposition. The properties of the composite coatings were investigated by using SEM, XRD, Wear test and Vicker's microhardness test. Pulse electrodeposited composite has exhibited enhancement of (111), (220), and (311) diffraction lines with an attenuation of (200) line. The results demonstrated that the microhardness of composite coatings under pulse condition was significantly improved than that of pure nickel coating as well as dc electrodeposited Ni-$TiO_2$ composite coatings. Wear tracks have shown the less plastic deformation in pulse plated composite. Coefficient of friction was also found to be lower in pulse plated composite coatings as compared to dc plated composite coatings.

  • A duplex surface treatment process of simultaneous aluminizing-chromizing process followed by plasma nitriding was performed on AISI HI3 steel and STS 403 steel. The properties of these duplex-treated steels were investigated and were compared with those of steels treated by single process of either simultaneous aluminizing-chromizing or plasma nilriding, in terms of microstructure, microhardness and high temperature wear resistance. Sim~dtaneous alumizing-chromizing process was done using a 2-step coating cycle and plasma nitriding process was done at $530^{\circ}C$ for 1.5 hour. AISI HI3 steel and STS 403 steel showed a FeA1 compound layer of approximately 350$\mu\textrm{m}$ thickness on the surface after simultaneous diffusion coating and nitrided layer of approximately 70-80$\mu\textrm{m}$ formed after the subsequent plasma nitriding process. The microhardness was improved much more by the duplex surface heatment than only by plasma nitriding. In addition the duplex treated specimens showed an improved high temperature wear resistance.

  • Objectives : This study was carried out to examine the effect of varnish fluoride and APF gel on the acid resistance and the remineralization of the enamel. Methods : At first, the microhardness changes of enamel surface were measured after demineralizing the fluoride treated tooth surface. Next, the changes were measured after fluoride application to the demineralized enamel surface. Results : 1. Acid resistance was higher in varnish fluoride groups than APF gel groups and the difference was significant(p<0.001). 1) Varnish fluoride groups Microhardness of enamel surface showed $297.76{\pm}9.89$ after fluoride treatment and $260.90{\pm}28.67$ after drmineralization. The changes of Vickers hardness number(VHN) were $-36.86{\pm}27.30$. 2) APF gel groups Microhardness of enamel surface showed $298.79{\pm}17.28$ after fluoride treatment and $43.75{\pm}18.58$ after demineralization The changes of VHN were $-255.04{\pm}21.31$. 2. No significant changes were surveyed in both varnish fluoride groups and APF gel groups as for remineralization of enamel(p>0.05). 1) Varnish fluoride groups Microhardness of enamel surface showed $46.58{\pm}15.42$ after demineralization and $46.61{\pm}15.70$ after fluoride treatment. The changes of VHN were $0.02{\pm}3.75$. 2) APF gel groups Microhardness of enamel surface showed $47.13{\pm}19.31$ after demineralization and $42.59{\pm}16.12$ after fluoride treatment. The changes of VHN were $-4.54{\pm}5.06$. Conclusions : Varnish fluoride showed higher acid resistance than APF gel, however both of them were observed to have no effect on the remineralization of the enamel.
