As the flying height decreased, it is essential that hard disk drives perform reliable under various environmental conditions. In this paper the tribological characteristics of a head/disk interface are investigated under various temperature, relative humidity, altitude and outgas conditions. Specially, Contact-Start-Stop(CSS) tests were performed to assess the stiction, acoustic emission, slider take-off behavior, and track average amplitude(TAA). It is shown that the surface damage and head failure are accelerated by high temperature and humidity as well as low ambient pressure.

Rapid screening method for the determination of the emissions of pollutants from vehicle interior parts and materials have been developed as ISO 12219-2 which is using bag and based on a static condition. The method was not controlled humidity in the test bag, so it is not suitable test method for formaldehyde emission test which is highly related to humidity condition. In this study, possibility of control humidity in the static test bag by adding extra water and the effect of humidity condition for formaldehyde emissions have been investigated. The relative humidity in the test bag was affected not only amount of water added also material of test bag and test specimen. The emission intensity of formaldehyde was increased according to increasing relative humidity in test bag. But excessively supplied water was condensed on the inner surface of test bag and surface of sample specimen that were sorption formaldehyde and were reduced its emission intensity.

Dependence of residual compressive stress of diamond-like carbon (DLC) films on relative humidity was investigated. Polymeric, graphitic and diamond-like carbon films were prepared by r.f.-PACVD using methane or benzene with the negative self bias voltage of the substrate ranging from -100 to -800 V. In-situ measurements of the residual stress were carried out in an environment chamber where the relative humidity was varied from 10% to 90%. In dense DLC film of high residual compressive stress and hardness, we could not observe any change in the residual compressive stress with relative humidity. However, in the cases of graphitic and polymeric DLC films, abrupt change in the residual stress occurred by changing the relative humidity. The quantity of the stress change was inversely proportional to the film thickness, which means that the stress change with humidity is not due to the penetration of the water molecule into the film structure, but due to surface interaction between water molecules and film surface.
This study was to determine the characteristics of vapor-permeable waterproof finished fabric by the coating method. 4 different kinds of coating fabrics (A : wet, porous, polyurethane, B : dry, no porous, polyurethane, C : shape memory polyurethane and D : dry, porous polyurethane) were used, which were developed recently With this sample, moisture transport rate ($40^{\circ}C$, 45%RH & $40^{\circ}C$, 95%RH), changes of coating side's shape by washing times, water repellency rate, contracted length, qmax, heat conductivity, heat keeping rate, heat keeping rate with cotton, heat keeping rate on humidity temperature and humidity within clothing etc. were checked. And it was done in a climate chamber under $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, $65{\pm}5%RH$. The results of this study were as follow; In the moisture vapor transmission of sample B and C increased on high temperature and high humidity while sample A and D decreased, on this condition. Qmax rate had high relation with ground fabric's surface properties and the order was A>C>D>B. Heat conductivity had high relation with thickness and surface properties. Heat keeping rates on sweat condition showed around half percents of heat keeping rates on normal condition, but had no relation with moisture vapor transport rate. Changes of the fabric's properties by washing times were different in accordance with the construction of fabrics and the coating resin. Sample C had tow heat keeping rate on the high temperature and humidity and high heat keeping rate on the low temperature and humidity Moisture transport rate of vapor-permeable waterproof finished fabrics had high relation with the properties of ground fabrics on low humidity condition, but on the high humidity condition, it was highly related with the properties of coating resin.
Friction and wear properties of the Boron carbide ($B_{4}C$) coating 100 nm thickness were studied under various relative humidity (RH). The boron carbide film was deposited on silicon substrate by DC magnetron sputtering method using $B_{4}C$ target with a mixture of Ar and methane ($CH_4$) as precursor gas. Friction tests were performed using a reciprocation type friction tester at ambient environment. Steel balls of 3 mm in diameter were used as counter-specimen. The results indicated that relative humidity strongly affected the tribological properties of boron carbide coating. Friction coefficient decreased from 0.42 to 0.09 as the relative humidity increased from $5\%$ to $85\%$. Confocal microscopy was used to observe worn surfaces of the coating and wear scars on steel balls after the tests. It showed that both the coating surface and the ball were significantly worn-out even though boron carbide is much harder than the steel. Moreover, at low humidity ($5\%$) the boron carbide showed poor wear resistance which resulted in the complete removal of coating layer, whereas at the medium and high humidity conditions, it was not. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) analyses were performed to characterize the chemical composition of the worn surfaces. We suggest that tribochemical reactions occurred during sliding in moisture air to form boric acid on the worn surface of the coating. The boric acid and the tribochemcal layer that formed on steel ball resulted in low friction and wear of boron carbide coating.

Four different data reduction methods for the heat transfer coefficients from experimental data under dehumidifying conditions are compared. The four methods consist of two heat and mass transfer models and two fin efficiency models. Data are obtained from two heat exchanger samples having plain fins or wave fins. Comparison of the reduced heat transfer coefficients revealed that the single potential heat and mass transfer model yielded the humidity-independent heat transfer coefficients. Two fin efficiency models-enthalpy model and humidity model-yielded approximately the same fin efficiencies, and accordingly approximately the same heat transfer coefficients. The heat transfer coefficients under wet conditions were approximately the same as those of the dry conditions for the plain fin configuration. For the wave fin configuration, however, wet surface heat transfer coefficients were approximately 12% higher. The pressure drops of the wet surface were 10% to 45% larger than those of the dry surface.
The low level atmospheric obsewation carried out to Investigate magnitude, formation and dissipation of nocturnal surface Inversion layer, also to survey relation to each meterological parameter In Inversion layer at Pusan power plant for Oct. 13, 1996. As coastal area, the surface Inversion layer height was relatively high(186m), and after sunset unstable layer formated firom surface to around 40m, and the Inversion layer was left still in the upper layer. The surface Inversion layer dissipated at 0920LST perfectly. The layer that strong Inversion layer was formated, showed steep variation of potential temperature and wand speed and relative humidity.

The effect of OTS(octadecyltrichlorosilane) SAM(self-assembled monolayer) on the micro-adhesion has been studied. OTS SAM was formed on the Si(100) surface and SPM (scanning probe microscope) tips with different radius of curvature were fabricated by a series of masking and etching processes. Pull-off forces of different tips on Si and OTS SAM surfaces were measured by SPM in different relative humidities. The surface of OTS SAM was changed to hydrophobic surface and the micro-adhesion force of OTS SAM was lower than that of pure Si. As the tip radius of curvature and the relative humidity increased. the micro-adhesion force increased. Based on the test results. the main parameter affected to the micro-adhesion was absorbed humidity on the surface.
