  • The Enthalpy Model was verified in order to analyze two- dimensional phase change problems. By using the Enthalpy Model, interface locations, frozen fraction rates, heat flux distribution rut cooled surfaces, and surface-integrated heat flux were purely numerically calculated in rectangular thermal storage units, whose initial condition was saturated liquid and phase change material was cooled on its boundaries by convective heat transfer. The calculations were performed for various Stefan numbers and Biot numbers. The effect on those dimensionless numbers were explained.

  • The constriction thermal resistance due to the floor supports in the Ondol floor heating system was investigated. The resistance has significant influence on the uniformity of floor surface temperature and heat flux through the floor. The heat flux decreased as much as $30\%$ for the geometry of the same channel and support areas.

  • In this study, the behavior of frost formation according to surface characteristics in the fin-tube heat exchanger has been examined experimentally. The results show that the thickness of the frost which is attached to the hydrophilic heat exchanger becomes thin and the air pressure drop is smaller than that of bare aluminium heat exchanger However, the frost mass of hydrophilic heat exchanger is more than the bare one. Hence, high density frost is attached to hydrophilic heat exchanger. The sensible and latent heat flux of hydrophilic heat exchanger is bigger than that of bare one, but the increasing amount is very small and the improvement of thermal performance is also very small. The variation of fin-pitch of heat exchanger shows little influence on frost formation and hydrophilic heat exchanger loses its surface characteristics rapidly with increasing relative humidity.

  • This paper describes an experimental investigation which has been carried out with distilled water with the range of heat flux and pressure covering 7,400-28,000kcal/$m^2/h$ and 0.42-1.0332kg/$cm^{2}abs$, respectively. In this experiment, Nickel coated mirror surface heater of 5 cm O.D. was used as a heating source. The conclusions summerized as follows;1. The useful correlation of the test data for the heat transfer coefficient is presented as a function of the pressure. $$a/a_{s}=c{\times}p\;0.18$$ where a is the heat transfer coefficient and $a_s$ is the heat transfer coefficient at atmospheric pressure and p is the pressure, C is constant. 2. The bubble diameter near the heating surface and rising velocity increased with the heat flux. 3. A decrease in pressure results in the decrease of the number of nucleation sites and the increase of the bubble volume. 4. Bubble rising velocity differences are incrased maximumly up to $200\%$ of that at atmopheric pressure.

  • We have investigated the seasonal characteristics of surface turbulent fluxes observed at Ieodo Ocean Research Station from 2005 to 2006. Both 10Hz and 30 minutes flux data are quality controled, and tilt correction is performed in 10Hz data before quality control. The turbulent fluxes of open sea shows clear seasonal variations, though diurnal variations are barely shown. The seasonal ratio of stable and unstable conditions are closely related to the temperature difference between sea surface and air. In stable and semi-stable condition, latent and sensible heat fluxes have very small values without any relationship with wind speed. Though friction velocity shows slightly increasing trend with wind speed, it has many outliers. In unstable condition, turbulent fluxes increased with wind speed. Especially, latent heat flux increased rapidly during DJF. The latent heat flux at high wind speeds is more scatter.

  • Experimental investigations were attempted to simultaneously observe the vapor behaviors and critical heat flux under static and rolling conditions. From visualization results, vapor initiated, grew, and detached individually in a vertical direction from the static heated surfaces (at 10, 20, and 30°). While under rolling motion, initiated vapor grew, and interacted with each other, resulting in forming a wider dry spot on the heated surface. Also, it was observed that the vapor drifted upward and stayed on the heated surface longer compared to under static condition. The faster the platform rolls, the longer the vapor stay on the heated surface, significantly decreasing the CHF. On the other hand, as the platform rolls slower (at high rolling period), CHF increases. CHF was decreased with increasing maximum rolling amplitude and inclination angle under both conditions (static and rolling). CHF under rolling conditions was noticed to be lower than under static condition except at maximum rolling amplitude of 10°. The bubble departure frequency at a maximum rolling amplitude of 10° was the highest among all of rolling amplitudes, thereby enhancing the CHF. These results indicate that rolling motion significantly affects vapor behaviors and CHF.

  • An experimental study was performed to evaluate the effects of surface coating and an enhanced insulation structure on the downward facing boiling process and the critical heat flux on the outer surface of a hemispherical vessel. Steady-state boiling tests were conducted in the Subscale Boundary Layer Boiling (SBLB) facility using an enhanced vessel/insulation design for the cases with and without vessel coatings. Based on the boiling data, CHF correlations were obtained for both plain and coated vessels. It was found that the nucleate boiling rates and the local CHF limits for the case with micro-porous layer coating were consistently higher than those values for a plain vessel at the same angular location. The enhancement in the local CHF limits and nucleate boiling rates was mainly due to the micro-porous layer coating that increased the local liquid supply rate toward the vaporization sites on the vessel surface. For the case with thermal insulation, the local CHF limit tended to increase from the bottom center at first, then decrease toward the minimum gap location, and finally increase toward the equator. This non-monotonic behavior, which differed significantly from the case without thermal insulation, was evidently due to the local variation of the two-phase motions in the annular channel between the test vessel and the insulation structure.
