The response of AISI 310 type austenitic stainless steel to the novel low temperature plasma carburizing process has been investigated in this work. This grade of stainless steel shows better corrosion resistance and high temperature oxidation resistance due to its high chromium and nickel content. In this experiment, plasma carburizing was performed on AISI 310 stainless steel in a D.C. pulsed plasma ion nitriding system at different temperatures in $H_2-Ar-CH_4$ gas mixtures. The working pressure was 4 Torr (533Pa approx.) and the applied voltage was 600 V during the plasma carburizing treatment. The hardness of the samples was measured by using a Vickers micro hardness tester with the load of 100 g. The phase of carburized layer formed on the surface was confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The resultant carburized layer was found to be precipitation free and resulted in significantly improved hardness and corrosion resistance.
This study compared tooth's remineralization using enamel surface artificially demineralized with 0.1M lactate and HCL solution using Vicker's Hardness Number(VHN) to compare CPP-ACP and remineralization of nano-sized Carbonate Apatite's initial caries. Using pH circulation models divided into 0% nano-CA, 5% nano-CA, 10% nano-CA, 10% CPP-ACP and D.W. they were treated for 5 minutes, three times a day for 14 days to get the following results. 1. There were no significant differences among the initial surface hardness of samples demineralized surface of front tooth in 5 groups. and all 5 groups' surface hardness reduced significantly after demineralization of enamel. 2. When inquiring into hardness changes through pH circulation model, the highest hardness change was in 5% nano-CA group. Also. 10% nano-CA and 10% CPP-ACP groups increased significantly. but there was no significant difference statistically. In generalizing the above experiment results, nano-sized Carbonate Apatite showed remineralization, and compared to 10% CPP-ACP group, 5% nano-CA had remineralization to artificial caries. thus implies that when we develop method to contact with tooth of nano-CA in the future, it is expected to gain synergy effect on function of saliva, a natural remineralization material.
The microstructures and hardness distributions of a large-sized high strength H-sectional steel with both V and Nb were systematically examined. The outer surface of the flange part was composed of martensite and bainite due to faster cooling, and had a high hardness value of approximately 310 Hv. However, the amounts of ferrite and pearlite increased and the hardness decreased with increasing the distance from the outer surface at the flange part, except the inner surface. High hardness value of about 290 Hv was measured at the upper surface of the web part having martensite and bainite. The hardness drastically decreased with increasing the web thickness, and then greatly rose again at the lower surface due to bainite formation caused by fast air cooling. The hardness of the flange part was higher than that of the web part due to the larger amount of low-temperature transformed phases, except for the lower surface of the web part. Nb-rich precipitates of 30 to 50 nm and V-rich precipitates less than 20 nm were observed at both flange and web parts. However, the particle size was smaller at the flange part than the web part, resulting in the higher strength of the flange part.
Intense electron beam was irradiated on the CrAlN thin films deposited in SKD61 under different incident energies and then the effect of electron beam irradiation on the enhancement of surface hardness and wear resistance was investigated. Surface hardness and wear resistance of the CrAlN films is increased proportionally with the electron beam energy. While the surface hardness of as deposited CrAlN film is Hv ($0.1g{\cdot}f$) 450, the hardness oflectron irradiated (600 eV) film is Hv ($0.1g{\cdot}f$) 2050. The width of wear track of the untreated SKD61 is $X\_{\mu}m$, while the track-width of the electron irradiated CrAlN (600 eV) film is $787{\mu}m$, respectively. From the observed results, it is supposed that the optimal electron beam irradiation can be one of the useful surface treatment technologies for the enhancement of surface hardness and wear resistance of CrAlN/SKD61, simultaneously.

In this study, we conducted heat treatment on 14K, 18K yellow gold alloy at various temperature conditions for improving their hardness and moderating their surface defects. Also after the heat treatment we used EPMA (Electron Probe Micro Analyzer), XRF (x-ray Fluorescence spectroscopy) for qualitative analysis and OM (optical microscope), SEM (scanning electron microscope) to investigate the changes of surface grain boundary. We used Vickers hardness tester to verify the changes of hardness. After the heat treatment, 14K, 18K gold alloys showed improved hardness and moderated surface defects at specific temperatures and duration.

The size and prospects of the domestic semiconductor equipment market are increasing every year. In the case of various parts used inside semiconductor equipments, high durability such as high strength and abrasion resistance is demanded. Particularly, the gases used in semiconductor production processes are toxic. In order to prevent such toxic gas leakage, a precision processing technique and a surface treatment technique for preventing corrosion are required. Electro-polishing is an electro-chemical method of polishing a metal surface to make it smooth and polished. Electro-polishing is mainly used in the finishing process of metal surface. Unlike mechanical polishing, electro-polishing is used in many fields, such as fine chemical etching equipment, since no damaged layer or burr, fine polishing groove and particles are generated. However, in order to withstand the gas used in the semiconductor equipment, the parts must have high corrosion resistance. However, the surface hardness generally become lowered through electro-polishing. Therefore, in this study, surface hardness were experimentally observed before and after electro-polishing. Then, a method of improving hardness by preparing a nitrided layer by plasma ion nitriding treatment.
In this study, we designed an vibration cutting tool that can achieve improvements such as low cutting force, interrupted chip evacuation and better surface quality of cutting performance to obtain high-quality surface roughness and improvement of tool wear, which is an issue in the machining of high-hardness mold steel. Among the resonance frequency modes of the vibration cutting tool, the bending mode was used to maximize the driving amplitude of the vibration tool tip, and the resonance frequency was confirmed through the finite element method. After measuring the actual resonant frequency of the designed tool using an optical fiber sensor, the cutting force and machining surface of vibration cutting and conventional cutting were compared and analyzed in the turning process of high hardness mold steel (STAVAX). As a result of the experiment, the cutting force was reduced by about 20 % compared to the conventional cutting process, and the surface roughness was also improved by about 60 %. This study suggested that the tool wear and surface quality of high-hardness steel can be improved through the vibration cutting method in the machining of high hardness mold steel.
This study aimed to address the limitations of traditional plasma nitriding methods by implementing a short-term plasma oxy-nitriding treatment on the surface of AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel. This treatment involved the sequential formation of nitride and oxide layers, to enhance surface hardness and corrosion resistance, respectively. The process resulted in the formation of a 20 ㎛-thick nitride layer and a 3 ㎛-thick oxide layer on the steel surface. Initially, the hardness increased by 2.2 times after nitriding, followed by a subsequent decrease of approximately 31 % after oxidation. While the nitriding process reduced corrosion resistance, the subsequent oxidation process led to the formation of a passive oxide film, effectively resolving this issue. The pitting corrosion of the oxide passive film started at 82.6 mVssc, providing better corrosion resistance characteristics than the nitride layer. Consequently, the trade-off between surface hardness and corrosion resistance in plasma oxy-nitrided AISI 420 martensitic stainless steel is anticipated to be recognized as an innovative and comprehensive surface treatment process for biomedical components.

The cutting tests of aluminum alloy with heat treatmented various hardnesses after rheo-fonning were carried out using CNC milling machine. The surface roughness(Ra, Rmax) of cut surface and cutting forces are measured at various cutting conditions such as low spindle speed, feed speed and hardness. In the CNC end-milling, the surface roughness increases as feed speed increases and decreases as spindle speed increases. However, the bulit-up edge has occurred on in case of low hardness and low feed speed. In experimental conditions, as the hardness of aluminum alloy increases, the surface roughness(Ra, Rmax) decreases

Experimental results on plastic strain induced in truning operation are presented in this paper. The plastic strain is computed by lagrangian strain using grid method, and metal cutting phenomena are also illustrated by micrograph and distribution figures of plastic strain and microvickers hardness of the machining surface. In the cutting of ductile materials, such as carbon steel, generally, the plastic strain is found to be concentrated near the surface. The amount of plastic strain increases with increasing cutting speed and feed rate. The dustribution of microvickers hardness is greater near the cutting surface and decreases from the machining surface under which its hardness returns to the normal hardness of the material.
