  • Approaches for analyzing indentation hardness are still controversial, although the instrumented indentation technique has been generalized as one powerful method that can record surface deformation behaviors. Material pile-ups around the indenter/surface contact region make the conventional Oliver and Pharr's analysis on the instrumented indentation curve inaccurate. Thus, in order to prove the validity of the hardness analyses, five approaches were applied to the experimental data obtained from fused quartz and (100) monocrystalline tungsten specimens; an elastic recovery analysis on instrumented indentation curves, three indentation work analyses on the unit plastic volume, and a differentiation analysis on remnant indentation morphologies were tried. Five kinds of indentation hardness overlapped on one result plot showed the validity of each analysis. The modified indentation work approach based on a new definition of plastic volume showed consistent results with those from the Oliver-Pharr's and image differentiation methods. In the case of pile-up accompanying deformation, the Oliver-Pharr's and image differentiation methods showed the upper and lower limits of indentation hardness, respectively.

  • The half-value breadth off-ray diffraction profile line is generally used for a factor in nondestructive hardness measuring method of steel. In this paper, the problem in using the half-value breadth for the hardness measuring method is evaluated in strain hardened steel. And new hardness measuring method using residual stress is proposed X-ray diffraction test after rolling contact fatigue test of ball bearing with inner race of various hardness are carried out to measure the distribution of residual stress and half-value breadth from surface. The result of this study shows that there is little correlation between half-value breadth and hardness in the higher strength region and in the region increasing the hardness by strain hardening. But the magnitude of residual stress on/under race after rolling contact fatigue test becomes clearly to be correlative with hardness. Thus, it is concluded that the hardness of strain hardened steel can be estimated by this relationship between residual stress and hardness.

  • FTMP(friction thermo-mechanical process) is an adaptation of friction stir welding, and can be used as a generic process to modify the microstructure at selective locations. In this study, in order to analyze characteristics of surface modification of ACA4 castings by FTMP, change of rotating speed(R/S) and traveling speed(T/S) of tool were applied as conditional parameter. Analysis of microstructure, hardness, surface roughness and depth of modified zone(MZ) were searched. The best condition were obtained at R/S 600 rpm and T/S 100 mm/min. At this time, hardness was 82 HV, the surface roughness was 0.07 mm and the depth at MZ was 1.72 mm. Free defects microstructure and fine Si particles formation and strong forging effects were analyzed at MZ.

  • Electron beam irradiation is widely used as a type of surface modification technology to advance surface properties. In this study, the effect of electron beam irradiation on properties, such as surface hardness, wear resistance, roughness, and critical load of Titanium Aluminium nitride (TiAlN) films was investigated. TiAlN films were deposited on the SKD-61 substrate by using cathode arc ion plating. After deposition, the films were bombarded with intense electron beam for 10 minutes. The surface hardness was increased up to 4520 HV at electron irradiation energy of 1500 eV. In addition, surface root mean square (RMS) roughness of the films irradiated at 1500 eV shows the lowest roughness of 484 nm in this study.

  • The comparisons of performance characteristics between the super-mirror face grinding machine using variable air pressure developed in this laboratory to grind precisely the sliding face of a surface hardened workpiece with thermal spray and the conventional one are investigated by measuring the surface roughness and hardness for a SCM440. To process variously workpiece according to shape, size and materials, the rotating and contacting forces of the developed grinding machine can be changed by air pressure. The surface roughness of processed workpiece can be also attained to state of mirror face by grinding precisely the sliding face with changing the rotating speed of diamond wheel. It is possible to be attached to the various machine tools because the super-mirror face grinding machine using variable air pressure is a small size. The grinding efficiency is elevated because it can be worked by two or more grinding machines attached to concurrently a machine tool for the large workpiece. In this study, results show that the cusp height of the super-mirror face grinding machine for the particle size of 100 and $1500No./mm^2$ is lower than that of the conventional one because the vibration is reduced by rotating very fast the diamond wheel with a pressed air and it can be processed by rotating the diamond wheel with a constantly varied air pressure perpendicular to workpiece surface, and that the workpiece in the super-mirror face grinding machine for the particle size of $3000No./mm^2$ can be processed to state of mirror face that is rarely seen by the cusp height. It is also found that the surface hardness of both the conventional and the super-mirror face grinding machines are increased as the particle size of diamond wheel is reduced, and the surface hardness of the super-mirror face grinding machine is HRC 1.1 ~ 1.8 higher than that of the conventional one.

  • After changing the heat treating atmosphere of nitrogen gas, argon gas and vacuum, the nitrogen contents, microstructural changes, hardness and corrosion resistance of 0.25wt.%N alloyed super duplex stainless steel have been investigated in the temperature range from $1050^{\circ}C$ to $1350^{\circ}C$. The nitrogen content showed to be increased up to 0.36wt.% after heat treating the specimen in nitrogen gas at $1200^{\circ}C$, while the decrement of nitrogen content in vacuum atmosphere was shown down to 0.03wt.% at $1350^{\circ}C$. After heat treating in the mixed gas atmosphere of argon and nitrogen at $1250^{\circ}C$, the surface ${\gamma}$ phase existed as ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ phase increased with increasing nitrogen gas content. The ${\gamma}$ single phase appeared at the surface above $80%N_2$ gas, while the surface ${\alpha}$ single phase was shown below $20%N_2$ gas. When heat treating the specimen in nitrogen gas at $1050^{\circ}C$, the hardness of austenite phases increased above Hv 40 at the surface layer compared to the hardness of the core parts, while decrement of denitriding effect caused to the hardness nearly unchanged between surface and the core parts after heat treating in vacuum atmosphere. The surface ${\gamma}$ single phase specimen showed superior corrosion resistance than the surface ${\alpha}$ single phase specimen. The surface ${\alpha}$ phase existed in the ${\alpha}+{\gamma}$ microstructure showed higher corrosion resistance after heat treating in the nitrogen gas atmosphere than the ${\alpha}$ phase heat treated in the argon gas and vacuum atmosphere.

  • In this study, surface composites were fabricated with Fe-based amorphous alloy powders and VC powders by high-energy electron beam irradiation, and the correlation of their microstructure with hardness and fracture toughness was investigated. Mixture of Fe-based metamorphic powders and VC powders were deposited on a plain carbon steel substrate, and then electron beam was irradiated on these powders without flux to fabricate surface composites. The composite layers of 1.3~1.8 mm in thickness were homogeneously formed without defects and contained a large amount (up to 47 vol.%) of hard $Cr_2B$ and $V_8C_7$ crystalline particles precipitated in the solidification cell region and austenite matrix, respectively. The hardness of the surface composites was directly influenced by hard $Cr_2B$ and $V_8C_7$ particles, and thus was about 2 to 4 times greater than that of the steel substrate. Observation of the microfracture process and measurement of fracture toughness of the surface composites indicated that the fracture toughness increased with increasing additional volume fraction of $V_8C_7$ particles because $V_8C_7$ particles effectively played a role in blocking the crack propagation along the solidification cell region heavily populated with $Cr_2B$ particles. Particularly in the surface composite fabricated with Fe-based metamorphic powders and 30 % of VC powders, the hardness and fracture toughness were twice higher than those of the surface composite fabricated without mixing of VC powders.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of wattage and curing time on surface hard-ness, three-point bending strength and internal porosity of microwave curing denture base resin. Two sizes of resin specimens were made of Acron $MC^{(R)}\;;\;3.5{\times}10{\times}60mm$ for surface hardness and three-point bending strength measurement and $5{\times}12{\times}60mm$ for internal porosity measurement. They were cured by microwave energy at varing wattages(500W, 700W) and curing times(2min., 3min., 4min.) to determine if a certain wattage/curing time combination would improve physical properties. Surface hardness was measured with Vikers hardness tester, three-point bend-ing strength with universal testing machine and internal porosity was calculated by measuring the weight in air and in water. The results obtained were as follows: 1. There was no significant difference in percent porosity among experimental groups(p>0.05). 2. 500W/3min. group showed the higher surface hardness than 700W/2, 3, 4min. groups(p<0.05), and 700W/4 min. group showed the lower surface hardness than 500W/2, 3, 4min. groups(p<0.05), but there was no significant difference among others(p>0.05). 3. 500W/3min. group yielded the higher value of bending strength than 500W/2min., 700W/3, 4min. groups(p<0.05), but there was no significant difference among others(p>0.05).

  • Nitrogen ion implantation in Nimonic 80A using plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) was investigated at a pulse voltage of -60 kV and ion dose of $3{\times}10^{17}{\sharp}/cm^2$, $6{\times}10^{17}{\sharp}/cm^2$, $12{\times}10^{17}{\sharp}/cm^2$. PIII is an effective technology to improve the surface hardness and wear resistance of materials. And also this technology is not limited by the shape and size of materials. PIII would be a promising technique in the future. Surface hardness and wear resistance of the $N^+$ ion implanted Nimonic 80A were increased with the increase in the incident ion dose. The surface hardness of the untreated Nimonic 80A is 420 Hv, the hardness of implanted Nimonic 80A is 1050 Hv at $N^+$ ion dose of $12{\times}10^{17}{\sharp}/cm^2$. The wear loss of the untreated is 82.5 mg, the wear loss of the implanted is 0.004g at $N^+$ ion dose of $12{\times}10^{17}{\sharp}/cm^2$. The $Cr_2N$ is detected on the surface of the implanted Nimonic 80A by XRD analysis.

  • This study was performed to observe the micro-structure change of surface, behavior of oxide change of element, the component transformation of the alloy and the bonding strength between the porcelain interface in order to investigate effects of indium, tin on interfacial properties of porcelain fused to low gold alloy. Hardness of castings was measured with a micro-Vicker's hardness tester. The compositional change of the surface of heat-treated specimen was analyzed with an EDS and an EPMA. The interfacial shear bonding strength between alloy specimen and fused porcelain was measured with a mechanical testing system(MTS 858.20). The results were as follows: 1) The hardness value of alloy increased as increasing amount of indium addition. 2) The formation of oxidation increased as increasing indium and tin contents after heat treatment. 3) Diffusion of indium and tin elements increased as increasing indium and tin contents in metal-porcelain surface after porcelain fused to metal firing. 4) The most interfacial shear bonding strength was increased as increasing a composition of adding elements, and a heat-treatment time, and an oxygen partial pressure. From the results of this study it was found that the addition of alloying elements such as indium and tin increase hardness of as-cast alloy, produce surface oxide layer of adding elements by heat-treatment which may improve interfacial bonding strength between alloy and porcelain.
