We investigated the effects of Au eutectic reaction on Si thin film growth by hot wire chemical vapor deposition. Small SiC and Si nano-particles fabricated through a wet etching process were coated and biased at 50 V on micro-textured Si p-n junction solar cells. Au thin film of 10 nm and a Si thin film of 100 nm were then deposited by an electron beam evaporator and hot wire chemical vapor deposition, respectively. The Si and SiC nano-particles and the Au thin film were structurally embedded in Si thin films. However, the Au thin film grew and eventually protruded from the Si thin film in the form of Au silicide nano-balls. This is attributed to the low eutectic bonding temperature ($363^{\circ}C$) of Au with Si, and the process was performed with a substrate that was pre-heated at a temperature of $450^{\circ}C$ during HWCVD. The nano-balls and structures showed various formations depending on the deposited metals and Si surface. Furthermore, the samples of Au nano-balls showed low reflectance due to surface plasmon and quantum confinement effects in a spectra range of short wavelength spectra range.

As a part of a series of study, this study reviewed the fire proof characteristics of high performance concrete RC column members using non-stripping form that accompanied metal lath lateral confinement to prevent spalling of high performance concrete which is increasingly used recently, and the results are as follows. Flow and air amount both satisfied target range, and compressive strength, over 80MPa at age 28 days, showed high strength range. As for spalling characteristics, in the case of plain in which no fiber is mixed, severe spalling occurred, and in the case of 0.05% nylon("NY" hereinafter)+polypropylene("PP" hereinafter) fiber mixture, only surface area experienced partial spalling. Regarding non-stripping form changes, both non-stripping 25-20 and non-stripping 50-20 experienced spalling at finish material area, and non-stripping 50-20 showed better spalling proof performance than non-stripping 25-20. In the case of non-stripping 50-40, spalling was prevented, and while mass reduction rate was less than 10%, its temperature hysteresis showed the most excellent fire proof performance with base metal surface area maximum temperature $376.1^{\circ}C$.

Methylammonium lead bromide ($MAPbBr_3$) has attracted a lot of attention due to their excellent optoelectronic properties such as the compositional flexibility relevant to photoluminescence (PL) and UV-Vis absorbance spectrum, high diffusion length, and photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY). Despite such advantages of organic-inorganic perovskite materials, more systematic study on manipulation of their optoelectronic properties in homo- or heterovalent metal ions doped halide perovskite nanocrystals is lacking. In this study, we systematically investigated the optical properties of colloidal $CH_3NH_3Pb_{1-x}Sn_xCl_{2x}Br_{3-2x}$ particles by addition of $SnCl_2$ into the typical methylammonium lead tribromide ($CH_3NH_3PbBr_3$) precursor solution. We found that only 1% addition of $SnCl_2$ shows a significant blue-shift from 540 nm to 420 nm in UV-Vis absorbance spectrum due to the strong quantum confinement effect. Furthermore, continuous blue-shift in photoluminescence spectra was observed as the amount of Cl increases. These experimental results provide new insights into the replacement of Pb within $MAPbBr_3$, required for the broadening of their application.

This paper presents the effect on the inelastic behavior and structural performance of concrete and filled steel pipe through a numerical method for reliable judgment under various load conditions of the CJS composite structural system. Variable values optimized for the CJS synthetic structural system and the effects of multiple variables used for finite element analysis to present analytical modeling were compared and analyzed with experimental results. The Winfrith concrete model was used as a concrete material model that describes the confinement effect well, and the concrete structure was modeled with solid elements. Through geometric analysis of shell and solid elements, rectangular steel pipe columns and steel elements were modeled as shell elements. In addition, the slip behavior of the joint between the concrete column and the rectangular steel pipe was described using the Surface-to-Surface function. After finite element analysis modeling, simulation was performed for cyclic loading after assuming that the lower part of the foundation was a pin in the same way as in the experiment. The analysis model was verified by comparing the calculated analysis results with the experimental results, focusing on initial stiffness, maximum strength, and energy dissipation capability.

Machine foundations with impact loads are common powerful sources of industrial vibrations. These foundations are generally transferring vertical dynamic loads to the soil and generate ground vibrations which may harmfully affect the surrounding structures or buildings. Dynamic effects range from severe trouble of working conditions for some sensitive instruments or devices to visible structural damage. This work includes an experimental study on the behavior of dry dense sand under the action of a single impulsive load. The objective of this research is to predict the dry sand response under impact loads. Emphasis will be made on attenuation of waves induced by impact loads through the soil. The research also includes studying the effect of footing embedment, and footing area on the soil behavior and its dynamic response. Different falling masses from different heights were conducted using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) to provide the single pulse energy. The responses of different soils were evaluated at different locations (vertically below the impact plate and horizontally away from it). These responses include; displacements, velocities, and accelerations that are developed due to the impact acting at top and different depths within the soil using the falling weight deflectometer (FWD) and accelerometers (ARH-500A Waterproof, and Low capacity Acceleration Transducer) that are embedded in the soil in addition to soil pressure gauges. It was concluded that increasing the footing embedment depth results in increase in the amplitude of the force-time history by about 10-30% due to increase in the degree of confinement. This is accompanied by a decrease in the displacement response of the soil by about 40-50% due to increase in the overburden pressure when the embedment depth increased which leads to increasing the stiffness of sandy soil. There is also increase in the natural frequency of the soil-foundation system by about 20-45%. For surface foundation, the foundation is free to oscillate in vertical, horizontal and rocking modes. But, when embedding a footing, the surrounding soil restricts oscillation due to confinement which leads to increasing the natural frequency. Moreover, the soil density increases with depth because of compaction, which makes the soil behave as a solid medium. Increasing the footing embedment depth results in an increase in the damping ratio by about 50-150% due to the increase of soil density as D/B increases, hence the soil tends to behave as a solid medium which activates both viscous and strain damping.

Numerous past studies have shown that safety and serviceability of many concrete infrastructures and buildings built in 1970's have far less strength capacities than their original intended design capacities, thereby requiring repair and strengthening. Currently, aged concrete structures are being repaired using various methods developed in the past. Unfortunately, these methods do not consider the specific conditions that these members are under, but they merely attach repairing materials on the external surface for random strength improvements. Therefore, in order to improve repair and strengthening methods by considering composite behavior between repairing material and structural member, enhanced construction methodologies are needed. Also, the enhanced repairing and strengthening methods must be able to be implemented on structural members constructed using high performance concrete to meet the present construction demand of building mammoth structures. Therefore, in this study, a repairing and strengthening method for retrofitting high strength concrete (HSC) columns that can effectively improve column performance is developed. A square HSC column's cross-sectional shape is converted to an octagonal shape by attaching precast members on the surface of the column. Then, the octagonal column surface is surface wrapped using Carbon Fiber Sheets (CFS). The method allows maximum usage of confinement effect from externally jacketing CFS to improve strength and ductility of repaired HSC columns. The research results are discussed in detail.
In this study, more economical than conventional reinforced soil retaining walls, we compared the behavior characteristic about the safety block type numerically for reinforced retaining wall. In this study, reinforced soil retaining wall, first, was integrated a wall putting shear key on the blocks. Second, construction reinforcement focused on the theoretical failure surface was satisfied with the stability of a retaining wall reinforced by a shear plane. when analyzing, element of using reinforcement was carried out a numerical analysis for the cable element and the strip element, and they were analyzed under the conditions according to the stiffener length, distance, with or without shear key. Analysis for the integration of the front wall was reinforced soil retaining walls by installing a larger displacement shear key confinement effect, if reinforced construction and reinforcement with 1 interval and 2 interval, the failure surface was bigger displacement constraints. Generating a deformation amount was smaller than the generation amount of deformation accrued during construction of AASHTO so that it was stable.

Analyzing the tunnel excavation behavior and its effect on the surrounding ground involves large deformation behavior. Therefore, in order to properly simulate the tunnel excavation process and rigorously investigate the actual effect of excavation on surrounding ground and tunnel structure large deformation analysis method is required. In this study, two major numerical approaches capable of considering large deformations behavior were applied to investigate the effect of tunnel boring machine excavation on the surrounding ground: coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) and the automatic remeshing (AR) method. Relative performance of both approaches was evaluated through the ground response due to TBM excavation. The ground response will be quantified by estimating the range of the excavation damaged zone (EDZ). By comparing the results, the range of the EDZ will be suggested on the vertical and horizontal direction along the TBM excavation surface. Based on the computed results, it was found that the size of EDZ around the excavation surface and the tendencies was in good agreement among the two approaches. Numerical results clearly show that the size of the EDZ around the tunnel tends to be larger for rock with higher RMR rating. The size of the EDZ is found to be direct proportional to the tunnel diameter, whereas the depth of the tunnel is inversely proportional due to higher confinement stress around the excavation surface.

Today, engineers are facing new set of challenges that are quite different from the conventional ones. Information technologies are rapidly commoditizing while the paths beyond the current roadmaps became uncertain as various technologies have been pushed to their limits. Along with these changes in IT ecosystems, grand challenges such as global security, health, sustainability, and energy increasingly require trans-disciplinary solutions that go beyond the traditional arenas in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). Addressing these needs is shifting engineering education and research to a new paradigm where the emphasis is placed on the consilience for holistic and system level understanding and the convergence of technology with AHSD (arts, humanities, social science, and design). At the center of this evolutionary convergence, nanotechnologies are enabling novel functionalities such as bio-compatibility, flexibility, low power, and sustainability while on a mission to meet scalability and low cost for smart electronics, u-health, sensing networks, and self-sustainable energy systems. This talk introduces the efforts of convergence based on the emerging nano technology tool sets in the newly launched School of Integrated Technology and the Yonsei Institute of Convergence Technology at Yonsei International Campus. While the conventional devices have largely depended upon the inherent material properties, the newer devices are enabled by nanoscale dimensions and structures in increasingly standardized and scalable fabrication platform. Localized surface plasmon resonance in 0 dimensional nano particles and structures leads to subwavelength confinement and enhanced near-field interactions enabling novel field of metal photonics for sensing and integrated photonic applications [1,2]. Unique properties offered by 1 dimensional nanowires and 2 dimensional materials and structures can enable novel electronic, photonic, nano-bio, and biomimetic applications [3-5]. These novel functionalities offered by the emerging nanotechnologies are continuously finding pathways to be part of smart systems to improve the overall quality of life.

This paper reports on the DC and RF characteristics of AlGaN/InGaN/GaN high electron-mobility transistors (HEMTs) grown by molecular beau epitaxy(MBE) on sapphire substrates. The devices with a 0.5 ${\mu}$m gate-length exhibited relatively flat transconductance(g$\_$m/), which results from the enhanced carrier confinement of the InGaN channel. The maximum drain current was 880 mA/mm with a peak g$\_$m/ of 156 mS/mm, an f$\_$T/ of 17.3 GHz, and an f$\_$MAX/ or 28.7 GHz. In addition to promising DC and RF results, pulsed I-V and current-switching measurements showed little dispersion in the unpassivated AlGaN/InGaN HEMTs. These results suggest that the addition of In to the GaN channel improves the electron transport characteristics as well as suppressing current collapse that is related to the surface trap states.
