  • Recently, hybrid concrete structures such as a concrete-filled steel tubular(CFT), a steel reinforced concrete(SRC) and a composite material are popular in structure applications. They also have merit of high strength, high ductility, and large energy absorption capacity. But the analysis of hybrid concrete structures is very difficult owing to the complex behavior of concrete under passive confinement. This paper has analyzed CFT, which receives passive confinement using Tri-Surface concrete model for three dimension finite element analysis. By the result of that, the proposed model was properly forecasted a concrete behavior that receives passive restraint as well as non-linear analysis of concrete which receive uniaxial stress and high active confinement of 400Mpa. If the model through the steady study is set up especially on the factor of concrete under passive confinement, the proposed concrete model will be surely useful for analysis of the hybrid concrete structures.

  • We propose a design and optimization method for a dielectric-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguide using a genetic algorithm. This structure consists of a polymer ridge on top of two layers of substrate and gold film. The thickness, width and refractive index of the ridge are designed to optimize the figures of merit including mode confinement and propagation length. The modal analysis combined with the effective index method shows that the designed waveguide exhibits a fundamental propagation mode with high mode confinement while ensuring that the propagation loss remains relatively low.

  • The effect of the specifications of a silicon-on-insulator vertical slot optical waveguide on the sensitivity of homogeneous and surface sensing configurations for TE and TM polarization, respectively, was systematically analyzed using numerical software. The specifications were optimized based on the confinement factor and transmission power of the TE-guided mode distributed in the slot. The waveguide sensitivities of homogeneous and surface sensing were calculated according to the specifications of the optimized slot optical waveguide.

  • The confinement of concrete from splitting bond failure is studied with the experiments and finite element models. The cracks in the test beam-end specimens containing various covers show a typical splitting failure with a dominant fracture surface. The finite element model includes representation of the splitting cracking using Hillerborg's fictitious crack model. The increase in bond strength from addition of covers are consistant for both test bars and numerical models. The numerical solution agrees well with results and also with the test results and also with the empirical equations. The splitting crack in the numerical models generally matches the crack surface observed in the laboratory. The confinement of concrete from splitting is one of the governing factors in the ultimate bond force.

  • A novel internal-type linear inductive antenna, which we refer to as a double comb-type antenna, was developed for a large-area plasma source with substrate size of $880\;mm{\times}660\;mm$ ($4^{th}$ generation glass size). In this study, effect of plasma confinement by applying multi-polar magnetic field was investigated. High density plasmas of the order of $3.18{\times}10^{11}\;cm^{-3}$ could be obtained with a pressure of 15 mTorr Ar at an inductive power of 5000 W with good plasma stability. This plasma density is higher than that obtained for the conventional double comb-type antenna, possibly due to the plasma confinement, low rf voltage, resulting in high power transfer efficiency. Also, due to the remarkable reduction in the antenna rf voltage and length, a plasma uniformity of less than 3% could be obtained within a substrate area of $880\;mm{\times}660\;mm$ as rf power increased.

  • Flow pattern of cavitation around a plano-convex foil, whose shape is similar to the inducer impeller of the turbo-pumps in the liquid fuel rocket engine, was observed by using a cryogenic cavitation tunnel of blowdown type for visualization. Working fluids were liquid nitrogen and hot water. The parameter range to be varied was between 20 and 60mm for channel width, 20 and 60mm for foil chord, -1.8 and 13.2 for cavitation number, 3.7 and 19.5m/sec for averaged inlet velocity, $8.5{\times}10^4$ and $1.5{\times}10^6$ for Reynolds number, -8 and $8^{\circ}$ for angle of attack, respectively. Especially at positive angle of attack, namely, convex surface being downstream, the whole cavity or a part of the cavity on the foil surface departs periodically. Periodic cavitation occurs only in case of smaller cavitation size than twice foil chord. Cavitation thickness and length in 20mm wide channel are larger than those in 60mm due to the wall confinement effect. Therefore, periodic cavitation in 60mm wide channel easily occurs than that in 20mm. These results suggest that the periodic cavitation is controlled by not only the hydrodynamic effect of vortex shedding but also the channel wall confinement effect.

  • The approach used in present work allows achieving highly exfoliated state of layered silicate s through confinement of the charged nanobeads within the gallery of swollen pristine clay. The latter is principally promoted by ion exchange that involves polar functional groups on the surface of nanobeads and sodium cation in the interlayer gallery of layered silicates. Surface functionality of the nanobeads plays crucial role in establishment of strong interactions with silicate surface, and eventually, dispersion of individual silicate nanoplatelets.

  • We present an efficient design approach for a plasmonic slot waveguide using a genetic algorithm. The analyzed structure consists of a nanometric slot in a thin metallic film embedded within a dielectric. To achieve high confinement without long propagation length, the thickness and width of the slot are optimally designed in order to optimize the figures of merit including mode confinement and propagation length. The optimized design is based on the finite element method and enhances the guiding and focusing of light power propagation.

  • Incomplete combustion due to quenching in a narrow confinement has been a major problem for realization of a reliable micro combustion device. In most micro combustors, effects of flows are absent in the quenching because the flow is laminar and no severe stretch is present. In such circumstance, quenching is caused either by heat loss or by removal of active radicals to the wall surface of the confinement. An experimental investigation was carried out to investigate the relative significance of these two causes of quenching of a premixed flame. A premixed jet burner with a rectangular cross section at the exit was built. At the burner exit, the flame stands between two walls with adjustable distance. The gap between the two walls at which quenching occurs was measured at different wall surface conditions. The results were analyzed to estimate the relative significance of heat loss to the wall and the removal of radicals at the surface. The measurements indicated that the quenching distance was independent of the wall surface characteristics such as oxygen vacancy, grain boundary, or impurities at low temperature. At high temperature, however, the surface characteristics strongly affect the quenching distance, implying that radical removal at the wall plays a significant role in the quenching process.
