Numerical Simulation of MIT Flapping Foil Experiment : Unsteady Flow Characteristics (MIT 요동 익형의 수치해석 : 비정상 유동 특성)

  • A Navier-Stokes code based on a unstructured finite volume method is used to simulate the MIT flapping foil experiment. A low Reynolds number $k-{\varepsilon}$ turbulence model is used to close the Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Computations are carried out for a domain involving two flapping foils and a downstream hydrofoil. The computational domain is meshed with unstructured quadrilateral elements, partly structured. Numerical solutions show good agreement with experiment. Unsteadiness inside boundary layer is entrained when a unsteady vortex impinge on the blade surface. It shoves that local peak value inside the boundary layer and also local minimum near the edge of boundary layer as it developes along the blade surface. The unsteadiness inside the boundary layer is almost isolated from the free stream unsteadiness and being convected at local boundary layer speed, less than the free stream value.

Numerical Investigation of the Stability of Flows induced by a Surface Acoustic Wave along a Slab

  • The stability of flows induced by a surface acoustic wave (SAW) propagating along the deformable walls in a confined parallel-plane microchannel or slab in the laminar flow regime is investigated. The governing equation which was derived by considering the nonlinear coupling between the deformable or waving interface and viscous fluids is linearized and then the problem is solved by a verified code based on the spectral method together with the associated interface and boundary conditions. The value of the critical Reynolds number was found to be near 1439 which is much smaller than the rigid-wall case: 5772 for conventional pressure-driven flows.

  • The purpose of the present study is to investigate the convective heat transfer characteristics and the validity of fin efficiency of the circular finned-tube heat exchanger by using commercial CFD code. The heat transfer coefficient obtained by using the laminar model was 22% overestimated to the experimental data. The fin surface temperature compared with the experimental data measured by the liquid crystal method. The fin efficiency by the present numerical experiment, defined as normalized and averaged fin surface temperature, was greater than the theoretical fin efficiency and the difference is increased at high value of the factor m.

  • Unsteady aerodynamic analysis of an aircraft is done using a frequency domian 3-D panel method. The method is based on an unsteady linear compressible lifting surface theory. The lifting surface is placed in a flight patch, and angle of attack and camber effects are implemented in upwash. Fuselage effects are not considered. The unsteady solutions of the code are validated by comparing with the solutions of a hybrid doublet lattice-doublet point method and a doublet point method for various wing configurations at subsonic and supersonic flow conditions. The calculated results of dynamic stability derivatives for aircraft are shown without comparision due to lack of available measured data or calculated results.

  • The Korean Next Generation Reactor(KNGR) is a Pressurized Water Reactor adopting direct vessel injection(DVI) to optimize the performance of emergency core cooling system(ECCS). In a certain accident, however, pressurized thermal shock(PTS) of the vessel due to the sudden contact with the injected cold water is expected. In this paper, an accident of Main Steam Line Break(MSLB) has been numerically investigated with direct vessel injections and an increased volume flow rate in some cold legs. Using FLUENT code, temperature distributions of the fluid in the downcomer and of reactor vessel including the core region have been calculated, together with the distribution of convective heat transfer coefficient(CHTC) at the cladding surface of the reactor vessel. The result shows that some parts of the core region of the reactor vessel have higher temperature gradient expressing higher thermal stress.

Study of Lower Hybrid Current Drive for the Demonstration Reactor

  • Steady-state operation of a fusion power plant requires external current drive to minimize the power requirements, and a high fraction of bootstrap current is required. One of the external sources for current drive is lower hybrid current drive, which has been widely applied in many tokamaks. Here, using lower hybrid simulation code, we calculate electron distribution function, electron currents and phase velocity changes for two options of demonstration reactor at the launched lower hybrid wave frequency 5 GHz. Two plasma scenarios pertaining to two different demonstration reactor options, known as pulsed (Option 1) and steady-state (Option 2) models, have been analyzed. We perceive that electron currents have major peaks near the edge of plasma for both options but with higher efficiency for Option 1, although we have access to wider, more peripheral regions for Option 2. Regarding the electron distribution function, major perturbations are at positive velocities for both options for flux surface 16 and at negative velocities for both options for flux surface 64.

  • Convergence characteristics and efficiency of three implicit approximate factorization schemes(ADI, DDADI and MAF) are examined using 2-Dimensional compressible upwind Navier-Stokes code. Second-order CSCM(Conservative Supra Characteristic Method) upwind flux difference splitting method with Fromm scheme is used for the right-hand side residual evaluation, while generally first-order upwind differencing is used for the implicit operator on the left-hand side. Convergence studies are performed using an example of the flow past a NACA0012 airfoil at steady transonic flow condition, i. e. Mach number 0.8 at $1.25^{\circ}$ angle of attack. The results were compared with other computational results in order to validate the current numerical analysis. The results from the implicit AF algorithms were compared well in low surface with the other computational results; however, not well in upper surface. It might be due to lack of the grid around the shock position. Because the algorithm minimizes the errors of the approximate decomposition, the improved convergence rate with MAF were observed.

  • A numerical investigation on a suction vortices, free vortices and subsurface vortices behavior in the model sump system with multi-intakes is performed A test model sump and piping system were designed based on Froude similitude for the prototype of the recommended structure layout by HI-9.B Standard for Pump Intake Design of the Hydraulic Institute. A numerical analysis of three dimensional multiphase flows through the model sump is performed by using the finite volume method of the CFX code with multi-block structured grid systems. A ${\kappa}-{\omega]$ ShearStressTransportturbulencemodelandthe Rayleigh-Plesset cavitation model are used for solving turbulence cavitating flow. From the numerical analysis, several types of vortices are reproduced and their formation, growing shedding and detailed vortex structures are investigated. To reduce abnormal vortices, an anti-vortex device is considered and its effect is investigated and discussed.

  • An ejector is designed for the purpose of engine bay cooling. The primary flow of the ejector is the exhaust gas of the PW206C turboshaft engine. The mass flow of secondary flow is calculated by using the approximate analytic equation. And the effect of exhaust gas flow on the fuselage surface is investigated by using the Fluent Code. Three types of exhaust duct shape were compared in the viewpoint of surface temperature and aerodynamic drag. As a result, exhaust duct shape P3 shows minimum interference of exhaust gas and fuselage and minimum increment of drag among the three candidate shapes.

  • Plumbing surfaces of links were introduced to study the geometry of the complement of the links. A basket surface is one of these plumbing surfaces and it can be presented by two sequential presentations, the first sequence is the flat plumbing basket code found by Furihata, Hirasawa and Kobayashi and the second sequence presents the number of the full twists for each of annuli. The minimum number of plumbings to obtain a basket surface of a knot is defined to be the basket number of the given knot. In present article, we first find a classification theorem about the basket number of knots. We use these sequential presentations and the classification theorem to find the basket number of all prime knots whose crossing number is 7 or less except two knots $7_1$ and $7_5$.
