The effect of the additionally applied electrical current on the adhesion strength between electroless Cu and polyimide films was investigated. Peel tests were performed after applying electrical current within the range from 0.1 to 100 mA for the duration from 1 to 30 minutes. Sample with more than 1 mA of additional electrical current for 1 minute showed higher adhesion strength than that without additional electrical current. However, samples with 10 mA of additional electrical current for more than 10 miniutes showed the degradation of adhesion strength. Ra and RMS values of the peeled polyimide surface were proportional to the adhesion strength though there were no significant changes in the morphology of the peeled surfaces with varied amount and time-length of additional electrical current. Applying electrical current could increase the density of chemical bonding, which results in increase of the adhesion strength between copper and polyimide. However, in the case of applying additional electrical current for excessive amount or time, the degradation of the adhesion strength owing to the formation of copper oxide at the interface could occur.
Dadih is Indonesian traditional fermented buffalo milk believed by the natives to have beneficial effects on human health. This may be due to the probiotic properties possessed by the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) involved in its fermentation process. It was discovered that ten strains of dadih lactic isolates possessed some probiotic properties in vitro. In this study, the adhesion properties of dadih LAB, in comparison with documented probiotic strains, were investigated in vitro by using mucin extracted from human faeces and Caco-2 cells as the models for human intestinal mucosal surface and intestinal cells respectively. The adhesion results showed the distinction of Lactobacillus reuteri IS-27560 in adhering to both mucus layer and Caco-2 cells. The competition assay for adhesion to the mucus layer between dadih LAB and selected pathogens indicated the competence of Lactococcus lactis IS-16183 and Lactobacillus rhamnosus IS-7257 in significantly inhibiting the adhesion of Escherichia coli O157:H7. Accordingly, these two strains may be potential candidates for use as probiotic strains. Overall, the adhesion properties of all dadih LAB strains were relatively comparable to that of Lactobacillus casei Shirota and Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, the documented probiotic strains.
Epoxy-amine liquid prepolymers are extensively applied onto metallic substrates and cured to obtain painted materials or bonded joint structures. Overall performances of such systems depend on the created interphase between the organic layer and the substrate. When epoxy-amine liquid mixtures are applied onto more or less hydrated metallic oxide layer, concomitant amine chemical sorption and hydroxide dissolution appear lending to the chelate formation. As soon as the chelate concentration is higher than the solubility product, these species crystallize as sharp needles. Moreover, intrinsic and thermal residual stresses are developed within painted or bonded systems. When residual stresses are higher than the organic layer/substrate adhesion, buckling, blistering, debonding may occur leading to a catastrophic drop of system performances. Practical adhesion can be evaluated with either ultimate parameters (Fmax or Dmax) or the critical strain energy release rate, using the three point flexure test (ISO 14679-1997). We observe that, for the same system, the ultimate load decreases while residual stresses increase when the liquid/solid time increases. Ultimate loads and residual stresses depend on the metallic surface treatment. For these systems, the critical strain energy release rate which takes into account the residual stress profile and the Young's modulus gradient remains quite constant whatever the metallic surface treatment was. These variations will be discussed and correlate to the formation mechanisms of the interphase.
The cuticle of spider's exoskeleton is a hydrophobic and non-adhesive material, but the jumping spiders have the distinctive attachment apparatus for adhesion on smooth dry surface without sticky fluids. We have examined the whole tarsal appendages of the jumping spider, Plexippus setipes with using scanning electron microscope to reveal the fine structural characteristics of the dry adhesion system. All eight legs have the scopulae with a pair of claws on the tip of feet. Each scopula is composed of two groups of setae that are capable of dry adhesion on smooth surface, and the hook structure of the claw is advanced to move on the rough surface. The setae toward the bottom of the tarsal segment are densely covered by numerous setules on the underside which broadened from middle to distal portion. It has been revealed by this research that the contact area of the setule is always a triangular shape, and these cuticular surfaces are connected by the elongated stalks from the underlying setae. It is likely that the nano-scale structures including a triangular depression and a longitudinal groove on each setule could functionate when the spider detach its feet from the substrate.
Polycarbonate has a high transmittance to light, low specific gravity, flexibility and cost-effectiveness that extends the application field of the polymer to bio-engineering, optics, electronic parts, etc. Moreover, electro plating of metallic film on PC could endow the parts the electromagnetic interference shielding capability. However, poor adhesion of copper on PC limited the wide usage in the industry. In this work, a composite(PC/ABS) and MmSH(Momentary mold Surface Heating) injection process were used to improve the plating characteristics; plating thickness, gloss and adhesion. Also plasma treatment and chemical treatment were employed for improving adhesion. Plating characteristics on PC/ABS were better than those on PC due to the anchoring effect of butadiene. MmSH injection process could ameliorate the gloss and coating adhesion. Also plating thickness and adhesion of PC and PC/ABS were increased by plasma treatment.
The present study investigated the adhesion and corrosion resistance of subsequent electrophoretic paint (E-paint) on "electroless" paint coated AZ31 Mg alloy, which was formed by immersion of AZ31 Mg alloy in E-painting solution. It was found that with increasing immersion time of AZ31 in E-painting solution, the amount of paint deposited by electroless process increased but it decreased the electrochemical equivalent of E-painting process and the adhesion of the subsequent E-paint layer. The E-paint on electroless paint coated AZ31 contained pores with the highest pore density and the largest pore size was obtained on the samples with electroless times of 2 and 5 minutes, respectively. Results of the salt-spray test showed an accelerated growth of blisters over the entire surface of the sample immersed for less than 5 minutes whereas blisters were observed only in the vicinity of the scratch in case of samples treated for 15 and 30 minutes. The E-paint on AZ31 with shorter electroless immersion time in E-painting solution was found to have good adhesion and better corrosion resistance.
A copper based leadframe was oxidized in brown-oxide forming solution, then the growth characteristics of brown oxide and the effect of brown-oxide formation on the adhesion strength of leadframe to epoxy molding compound (EMC) were studied by using sandwiched double cantilever beam (SDCB) specimens. The brown oxide is composed of fine acicular CuO, and its thickness increased up to ~150 nm within 2 minutes and saturated. Bare leadframe showed alomost no adhesion to EMC, while once the brown-oxide layer formed on the Surface of leadframe, the adhesion strength increased up to ~80 J/$\m^2$ within 2 minutes. Correlation between oxide thickness, $\delta$ and the adhesion strength in terms of interfacial fracture toughness, $G_{c}$ was linear. Considering the above results, we might conclude that the main adhesion mechanism of brown-oxide treated leadframe to EMC is mechanical interlocking, in which fine acicular CuO plays a major role.e.
Electrochemical surface treatment of PAN-based carbon fibers in acidic electrolyte has been studied in increasing the surface functional groups on fiber surfaces for the improvement of fiber-matrix adhesion of the resulting composites. According to the FT-IR and XPS measurements, it reveals that the oxygen functional groups on fibers are largely influence on the composite mechanical behaviors, whereas the nitrogen functional groups are not affected in the system. In this work, a good correlation between surface functionality and mechanical properties is established.
