Zinc Phosphate Cement hand been used for about more than 100 years in luting of cast gold inlay. But many scientists had been trying to develop the new form of luting agent because the ZPC hand shown the lack of adhesiveness on the tooth structure and the toxicity to the pulp tissue. Recently many researches about the surface treatment of the cast body are being done to increase the adhesion of cement to it. The conventional Class I gold inlays were fabricated in the 20 permanent molars. After the internal surface of the cast body was sandblasted with $Al_2O_3$ particles and was tin-plated, the inlays were cemented with adhesive cement [G I cement and resin cement(Super-Bond & $Panavia_{EX}$)] and the evaluation on the adhesion pattern, adhesive strength and the fracture pattern of the adhesive cast gold inlay was compared to that of the cast gold inlay cemented conventionally with ZPC. The results were as follows : 1. The surface roughness of the cast body was increased significantly after sandblasting with the $Al_2O_3$ particles and the tin oxide layer, which was consisted of round particles, came into being. 2. The bond strength was in the order of Super-Bond, ZPC, Fuji I, $Panavia_{EX}$ group. The group cemented with Super-Bond showed statistically greater strength than the other groups(p<0.05). 3. The group cemented with ZPC was fallen apart by principal adhesion failure and that with Fuji I was by complete adhesion failure. But the group with Super-Bond showed pricncipal cohesive failure pattern and in the group with $Panavia_{EX}$, complete cohesive fracture pattern was shown and small protion of tooth structure was fractured out with cast body and the fractured surface showed the figure just as the enamel prism. 4. Various gaps were shown at the pulpal side regardless of little gap at the side walls of the cavity in all groups. Only the Super-Bond was attached to the tooth structure and the other cements were detached from both the tooth and the cast body.

In this study, we synthesized poly(itaconic acid-co-acrylamide) (IAcAAM) used as a novel polymer adhesion promoter to improve the adhesion strength of surface-treated Cu lead frames and epoxy composites. IAcAAM comprising itaconic acid, acrylamide was prepared through radical aqueous polymerization. The chemical structure and properties of IAcAAM was analyzed by FT-IR, 1H-NMR, GPC, and DSC. The surface of the copper lead frame was treated with high temperature, alkali, and UV ozone to reduce the water contact angle and increase the surface energy. The adhesive strength of Cu lead frame and epoxy composite increased with the decrease of contact angle. The adhesive strength of Cu lead frame/epoxy composite increased with the addition of IAcAAM in epoxy composite. As silica content increased, the adhesive strength of Cu lead frame and epoxy composite tended to slightly decrease.

Interaction between human osteoblast and TiN films was conducted in vitro. TiN films were produced by cathodic arc plasma deposition. The surface was characterized by atomic force microscopy (AFM). TiN films, glass substrates and Ti films were cultured with human osteoblasts for 48 and 72 h hours. Actin stress fiber patterns and microtubules of osteoblasts were found slightly more organized and distributed on TiN films compared to those on the Ti films and the glass substrates. Human osteoblasts also showed slightly higher cell attachment, proliferation, and focal contact adhesion on TiN films compared to those on Ti films and glass substrates. Our results demonstrated that TiN films showed slightly better cellular adhesion of osteoblasts than Ti films and glass substrates in a short-time culture period.
Direct thermal lamination of polyethylene film on aluminum plate without using adhesive was tried by modifying their surfaces to have polar groups. Polyethylene film was modified by treating with oxygen or acrylic acid plasma. Aluminum plate was modified by treating with boiling water or diaminocyclohexane plasma. Fairly high adhesion strength was obtained even in the case when only the polyethylene film was modified, and adhesion strength was so high that film was broken during the adhesion test if both the film and the aluminum plate were modified. Even chemical bonding seemed to be possible when the film treated with acrylic acid was laminated on the plate treated with diaminocyclohexane plasma by forming amide linkage through the reaction between COOH groups on the film surface and NH$_2$ groups on the plate surface.
The effects of the field emission property in relation to the surface morphology and adhesion force were investigated. The single-wall-nanotube-based cathode was obtained by use of an in-situ arc discharge synthesis method, a screen-printing method and a spray method. The morphologies of the formed emitter layers were very different. The emission stability and uniformity were dramatically improved by employing an in-situ arc discharge synthesis method. In this study, it was confirmed that the current stability and uniformity of the field emission of the cathode depend on the surface morphology and adhesion force of the emitters. The current stability of the field emission device was also studied through an electrical aging process by varying the current and electric field.
In this study, low molecular weight chitosan (LC) was added to dental cement liquid at 0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt% by weight for surface properties and oral bacteria adhesive of dental cement. The evaluated by net setting time and surface properties of surface energy on the surface roughness. The degree of oral bacterial adhesion was assessed using two strains of oral bacteria, S. mutans and E.coli. The results showed that the setting time at the LC0.5 group increased no statistically difference was observed (p<0.05). The surface roughness statically significant LC2.0 group and oral bacteria adhesion experiment results in contrast to the control group LC0, LC-added experimental group showed a somewhat lower adherent surface statistically significant difference was observed (p<0.05). It seems that this LC proved that surface properties and oral bacteria adhesion effect was demonstrated. Therefore, it was suggest that the additional effects of LC and research on a wide range of substances.
Cell-cell adhesion managed by various adhesion molecules is known to be one of important phenomena found in numerous immunological responses or diseases such as immunostimulation, rheumatoid arthritis and allergic diseases. In this study, we examined the regulatory role of ginsenosides (G)-Rb1, reported to display immunostimulatory and anticancer effects, on cell adhesion, the up-regulation of surface adhesion molecules and morphological changes using monocytic U937 and macrophage-like RAW264.7 cells. G-Rb1 significantly up-regulated U937 cell-cell adhesion mediated by both CD29 and CD43. It also enhanced U937 cell-fibronectin adhesion, while CD29 blocking antibody P5D2 strongly suppressed it. In agreement, this compound also significantly increased the surface level of CD29 as well as CD43. Furthermore, this compound differentially modulated CD82 up-regulation and morphological changes triggered by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA). Therefore, these results suggest that G-Rb1 may have differential modulatory function on cell adhesion events, surface molecule expression and morphological changes responsible for immune responses.

The majority of the described experimental results deal with relatively pure aluminium. Variations were made in the pretreatment of the aluminum substrates and an investigation was performed on the resulting changes in oxide layer composition and chemistry. Subsequently, the bonding behavior of the surfaces was investigated by using model adhesion molecules. These molecules were chosen to represent the bonding functionality of an organic polymer. They were applied onto the pretreated surfaces as a monolayer and the bonding behavior was studied using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy. A direct and clear relation was found between the hydroxyl fraction on the oxide surfaces and the amount of molecules that subsequently bonded to the surface. Moreover, it was found that most bonds between the oxide surface and organic functional groups are not stable in the presence of water. The best performance was obtained using molecules, which are capable of chemisorption with the oxide surface. Finally, it was found that freshly prepared relatively pure aluminum substrates, which are left in air, rapidly lose their bonding capacity towards organic functional groups. This can be attributed to the adsorption of contamination and water to the oxide surface. In addition the adhesion of a typical epoxy-coated aluminum system was investigated during exposure to water at different temperatures. The coating was found to quite rapidly lose its adhesion upon exposure to water. This rapid loss of adhesion corresponds well with the data where it was demonstrated that the studied epoxy coating only bonds through physisorptive hydrogen bonding, these bonds not being stable in the presence of water. After the initial loss the adhesion of the coating was however found to recover again and even exceeded the adhesion prior to exposure. The improvement could be ascribed to the growth of a thin oxyhydroxide layer on the aluminum substrate, which forms a new, water-stable and stronger bond with the epoxy coating. Two routes for improvement of adhesion are finally decribed including an interphasial polymeric thin layer and a treatment in boiling water of the substrate before coating takes place. The adhesion properties were finely also studied as a function of the Mg content of the alloys. It was shown that an enrichment of Mg in the oxide could take place when Mg containing alloys are heat-treated. It is expected that for these alloys the (hydr)oxide fraction also depends on the pre-treatment and on the distribution of magnesium as compared to the aluminium hydroxides, with a direct impact on adhesive properties.

Phosphoric acid treatments were conducted to improve the adhesion property of polyketone film to rubber. The effects of phosphoric acid treatments were characterized by using a contact angle analyzer and a XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy). Morphological changes were observed by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and an atomic force microscope (AFM) as the acid treatment condition varied in concentration and time. The contact angle was found to significantly decrease with the acid treatment. According to the XPS, increased wettability was attributed to the inclusion of oxygen containing groups such as hydroxyl, carbonyl and carboxyl by acid treatments. Cracks and pores were produced on the polyketone film surface and thus, roughness increased with the acid treatment. Interfacial adhesion strength between polyketone and natural rubber was largely improved by acid treatment due to the increased wettability and roughness of the polyketone surface. However, the higher level of acid treatment caused the degradation of the polyketone surface, and thus, its interfacial adhesion consequently decreased.

Effects of post-baking treatment conditions on the interfacial adhesion between electroless plated Ni and polyimide film were evaluated using $180^{\circ}C$ peel test. Measured peel strength values monotonically decrease from $38.6{\pm}1.1g/mm\;to\;26.8{\pm}2.2g/mm$ for the variations of post-baking treatment temperatures from $80^{\circ}C\;to\;180^{\circ}C$, respectively. Wet chemical treatment on the polyimide surface produces carboxyl and amide functional groups on the surface which is closely related to the change in interfacial adhesion between electroless Ni and polyimide films. It is speculated that interfacial adhesion seems to be controlled by carbonyl oxygen bonding near cohesive failure region during post-baking treatment.
