  • Ru catalysts supported on $CeO_2$ were synthesized by an impregnation method and characterized by numerous analytical techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy-energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Upon utilization of these catalysts for methane dry reforming with a $CH_4/CO_2$ ratio of 1:1 at different temperatures ranging from 550 to $750^{\circ}C$, the $Ru/CeO_2$ catalysts have shown to be active. In particular, Ru(0.55wt%) supported on $CeO_2$ (1) prepared by a hydrothermal method exhibited excellent activity with the conversion of > 75% at $750^{\circ}C$. In addition, the catalyst also proved to be highly stable for at least 47 h without catalyst deactivation under the dry reforming conditions.

  • In this study, we investigated the activity of Pd and Pt supported on acidic Fe-ZSM5 supports for selective catalytic oxidation of ammonia ($NH_3$-SCO). Among the catalysts, Pt/Fe-ZSM5 catalyst exhibited superior $NH_3$-SCO activity to Pd/Fe-ZSM5 catalyst. We also tested Pt/Fe-ZSM5 catalysts with different Fe loading using ion-exchange method to prepare Fe-ZSM5 supports, which resulted in the increased catalytic performance with smaller Fe content: $NH_3$ was oxidized completely at low temperature ($250^{\circ}C$). The physicochemical properties of Fe-ZSM5 were investigated to figure out the relationship between the characteristics of the catalysts and the catalytic activity on $NH_3$-SCO by Inductively coupled plasma-atomic emissions spectrometer (ICP-AES), $N_2$ sorption, X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature programmed desorption of $NH_3$ ($NH_3$-TPD) technique.

  • Platinum catalysts were prepared by impregnating platinum precursor on titania-, vanadia-, zirconia- and ceria-incorporated silicas followed by hydrogen peroxide treatment. The effects of the oxide incorporation and the hydrogen peroxide treatment in the preparation of the platinum catalysts on their platinum dispersion and catalytic activity in carbon monoxide oxidation were investigated. XRD, TEM, EXAFS, XPS and carbon monoxide chemisorption studies confirmed the high dispersion of platinum even on silica by the oxide incorporation and hydrogen peroxide treatment. However, the type of oxides incorporated on silica caused considerable variances in the adsorption and the catalytic activity in the oxidation of carbon monoxide on them. The incorporation of titania, zirconia and ceria on silica and further hydrogen peroxide treatment enhanced the platinum dispersion, resulting in the improved catalytic activities. Among the catalysts supported on the oxide-incorporated silicas, the platinum catalyst supported on zirconia-incorporated silica exhibited the highest activity because of the highest platinum dispersion due to the formation of Pt-O-Zr bonds.

  • The direct conversion of cellulose into polyols in $H_2$ was examined over Pt catalysts supported on various zeolites, viz., mordenite, Y, ferrierite, and ${\beta}$. For comparison, Pt catalysts supported on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$, $SiO_2-Al_2O_3$, and $SiO_2$ were also tested. The physical properties of the catalysts were probed with $N_2$ physisorption. The surface acidity was measured with temperature programmed desorption of ammonia ($NH_3$-TPD). The Pt content was quantified with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The Pt dispersion was determined with CO chemisorptions and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The conversion of cellulose appeared to be mainly dependent on the reaction temperature and reaction time because it depends on the concentration of $H^+$ ions reversibly formed in hot water. Pt/H-mordenite (20) showed the highest yield to polyols among the tested catalysts. Pt/H-zeolite was superior to Pt/Na-zeolite for this reaction. The polyol yield was dependent on the surface acid density and the external surface area.

  • Perovskite-type oxide catalysts in the $\textrm{LaMnO}_3$ family were prepared by both freeze drying and precipitation technique, and their catalytic activities with respect to the oxidation of CO with $O_2$ were measured in the composite gases. Freeze drying is a new technique for the prevention of migration of the solutes during drying. Therefore, the corrugated cordierite monolith fabricated with the Ø 1mm stainless steel bar was directly impregnated with nitrate solutions containing the appropriate cations, freeze dried and calcined. Precipitation was done by using $\textrm{(NH_4)}_2\textrm{CO}_3$ but the precipitated catalysts gave lower catalytic than the freeze dried samples due to, in part, relatively high calcining temperature. In this study, freeze dried composition had high catalytic activity, and their apparent activation energy for oxidation of CO was calculated by the rate plots using the data where the percent conversion of CO was less than 20%.

  • In this work, ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) were prepared by the conventional templating method using mesoporous silica (SBA-15) for Pt-Ru catalyst supports in fuel cells. The influence of surface modification on carbon supports on the electrochemical activities of Pt-Ru/OMCs was investigated with different pH. The neutral-treated OMCs (N-OMCs), base-treated OMCs (B-OMCs), and acid-treated OMCs (A-OMCs) were prepared by treating OMCs with 2 M $C_6H_6$, 2 M KOH, and 2 M $H_3PO_4$, respectively. The surface characteristic of the carbon supports were determined X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The electrochemical activities of the Pt-Ru catalysts had been enhanced when the OMCs supports were treated by basic or neutral agents, while the electrochemical activities had been decayed for the A-OMCs supported Pt-Ru.

  • A series of supported sulfided Ni-W/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ and Co-W/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ catalysts with different nickel and cobalt contents were studied in the hydrodenitrogenation of pyridine dissolved in n-heptane. The ranges of experimental conditions were at the temperatures between 453 and 753 K, and the pressures between 30 and 50 Bar. The catalytic activities with different nickel and cobalt contents were shown to be maximum at Ni/Ni+W = 0.2 - 0.3, Co/Co+W = 0.3 - 0.4. Pyridine conversion increased with pressure and temperature and the step of piperidine formation was found to be irreversible. The reaction orders in Ni-W/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ and Co-W/$\gamma-Al_2O_3$ catalysts were the first with respect to pyridine and reaction rate constants decreased with increase of initial pyridine concentration and their activation energies were 12.98 and 9.23 kcal/mol, respectively.

  • This study investigated the cathode catalyst of direct borohydride/hydrogen peroxide fuel cells for space exploration. Various catalysts such as Au, Ag, and Ni were supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). Various techniques, such as transmission electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller method, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction were conducted to investigate the characteristics of the catalysts. Fuel cell tests were performed to evaluate the performance of the catalysts. Ag/MWCNTs exhibited better catalytic activity than the Ni/MWCNTs and better catalytic selectivity of the Au/MWCNTs. Ag/MWCNTs presented good catalytic activity and selectivity even at an elevated operating temperature. The performance of Ag/MWCNTs was also stable for up to 60 minutes.

  • The catalytic activities of nickel-based catalysts were estimated for oxidizing acetaldehyde of VOCs exhausted from industrial facilities. The catalysts were prepared by sol-gel methods of SiO2 and SiO2-TiO2 as a xerogel followed by impregnating Al2O3 powder with the nickel nitrate precursor. The crystalline structure and catalytic properties for the catalysts were investigated by use of BET surface area, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and temperature programmed reduction (TPR) techniques. These results show that nickel oxide is transformed to NiAl2O4 spinel structure at the calcination temperature of 400 °C in response to the steps with after- and co-impregnation of Al2O3 powder in sol-gel process. The NiAl2O4 could suppress the oxidation reaction of acetaldehyde by catalysts. The NiO is better dispersed on SiO2-TiO2/Al2O3 support than SiO2/Al2O3 and SiO2-TiO2-Al2O3 supports. From the testing results of catalytic activities for oxidation of acetaldehyde, Catalysts showed a big difference in conversion efficiencies with the way of the preparation of catalysts and the loading weight of nickel. The catalyst of 8 wt.% Ni/TiO2-SiO2/Al2O3 showed the best conversion efficiency on acetaldehyde oxidation with 100% conversion efficiency at 350 °C.

  • Oxidative decomposition of 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenol(TCP) was studied in aqueous solution. Iron and manganese protoporphyrin [or tetrakis(p-carboxyphenylporphyrin)] and their polymer supported derivatives were used as catalysts, and $KHSO_5$ and tert-butyldroperoxide(TBHP) as oxidants. Metalloporphyrin itself shows very poor catalytic activity in oxidative decomposition of TCP with oxidant. However, very high catalytic activity was observed when metalloporphyrin was chemically bound to newly synthesized polymers or XAD2 resin. Additionally, it revealed much higher catalytic activity in the presence of water-soluble polymers having a electron-donating axial ligand such as pyridine and immidazole. Maleic acid and chloromaleic acid were found in the resulting solution by ESI-MS. Especially, XAD2-supported metalloporphyrins can be reused as catalysts due to insolubility to solvent, and stability against oxidant.
