Wheel for passenger car support the car weight with tires, and they transmit rolling and braking power into the ground. Whittling away at wheel weight is more effective to boost fuel economy than lighting vehicle body structure. A shape of hole in disk is optimized for minimizing the weight of steel wheel. Pro/ENGINEER program is used for formulating the design model, and ANSYS package is selected for analyzing the design model. It has difficulties to interface these commercial software directly. For Combining both programs, response surface methodology is applied to construct approximation functions for maximum stresses and maximum displacements are obtained by full factorial design of five levels. This steel wheel is modeled in 14-inch diameter of rim, and wide parameter of hole in disk is only selected as design variable for reducing the weight of steel whee. PLBA(Pshenichny-Lim-Belegundu-Arora) algorithm, which used the second-order information in the direction finding problem and uses the active set strategy, is used for solving optimization problems.
The soil nailing is one of the useful support-system in urban excavation because of the presence of other structures in the vicinity Since the soil nailing system was introduced, model experiments and theoretical studies have been performed to investigate behavior of soil nailed wall. However, there are few data in the case of multi-layered soil strata just like Seoul Metropolitan area in Korea. The feed back analyses are carried out using the measured wall displacement data for soil nailing construction sites with multi-layered strata in order to analyze the distance and the coefficients of extension zone of ground behind soil nailed wall. As a result, the distance of extension zone increased with increasing of the final excavation depth and the ratio of the distance to the final excavation depth was shown to be about 94% of the final excavation depth. Also, the coefficients of extension zone increased with enlargement of soil layer thickness and converged into constant value of 1.05. On the other hand, the maximum vertical displacements by the feed back analysis and Caspe's method were shown to be approximately 80%, 150~280% of the maximum horizontal displacement respectively.
In order to study the fire resistance of castellated composite beams with ortho-hexagonal holes and different beam-end restraints, temperature rise tests with constant load were conducted on full-scale castellated composite beams with ortho-hexagonal holes and hinge or rigid joint constraints to investigate the temperature distribution, displacement changes and failure patterns of castellated composite beams with two different beam-end constraints during the whole course of fire. The results show that (1) During the fire, the axial pressure and horizontal expansion deformation generated in the rigid joint constrained composite beam were larger than those in the hinge joint constrained castellated composite beam, and their maximum horizontal expansion displacements were 30.2 mm and 17.8 mm, respectively. (2) After the fire, the cracks on the slab surface of the castellated composite beam with rigid joint constraint were more complicated than hinge restraint, and the failure more serious; the lower flange and web at the ends of the castellated steal beams with hinge and rigid joint constraint produced serious local buckling, and the angles of the ortho-hexagonal holes at the support cracked; the welds at both ends of the castellated composite beam with rigid joint constraint cracked. (3) Based on the simplified calculation method of solid-web composite beam, considering the effect of holes on the web, this paper calculated the axial force and displacement of the beam-end constrained castellated composite beams under fire. The calculation results agreed well with the test results.
In this article, we present torsion-bending analysis of a composite FGM beam with an open section, according to the advanced and refined theory of 1D / 3D beams based on the 3D Saint-Venant's solution and taking into account the edge effects. The (initially one-dimensional) model contains a set of three-dimensional (3D) displacement modes of the cross section, reflecting its 3D mechanical behaviour. The modes are taken into account depending on the mechanical characteristics and the geometrical form of the cross-section of the composite FGM beam. The model considered is implemented on the CSB (Cross-Section and Beam Analysis) software package. It is based on the RBT/SV theory (Refined Beam Theory on Saint-Venant principle) of FGM beams. The mechanical and physical characteristics of the FGM beam continuously vary, depending on a power-law distribution, across the thickness of the beam. We compare the numerical results obtained by the three-beam theories, namely: The Classical Beam Theory of Saint-Venant (Classical Beam Theory CBT), the theory of refined beams (Refined Beam Theory RBT), and the theory of refined beams, using the higher (high) modes of distortion of the cross-section (Refined Beam Theory using distorted modes RBTd). The results obtained confirm a clear difference between those obtained by the three models at the level of the supports. Further from the support, the results of RBT and RBTd are of the same order, whereas those of CBT remains far from those of higher-order theories. The 3D stresses, strains and displacements, obtained by the present study, reflect the 3D behaviour of FGM beams well, despite the initially 1D nature of the problem. A validation example also shows a very good agreement of the proposed models with other models (classical or higher-order beam theory) and Carrera Unified Formulation 1D-beam model with Lagrange Expansion functions (CUF-LE).

Due to single symmetry of cross section, T-shaped members are likely to buckle in a flexural-torsional mode when they are subjected to axial compression. Therefore, the flexural-torsional buckling can be regarded as a governing mode of global buckling. An experimental program has been carried out to investigate the flexural-torsional buckling behavior of pultruded T-shaped members. Two types of pultruded members were tested in the experiment, and they were made of either E-glass/vinylester or E-glass/polyester. Lay-up and thickness of reinforcing layers, volume fractions of each constituents in layers, mechanical properties were experimentally determined. Two sets of knife edge fixure were used to simulate simple support condition for flexure and twisting, and the lateral displacements and the angle of twist were measured using three potentiometers. Every specimen buckled in a flexural-torsional mode, and most of the specimens showed post-buckling strength.
The ground anchor support system may not be occasionally used because of space limitations in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently adopted as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in an excavation zone of the existing weak subsoils. Pretensioning the soil nails then could play important roles to reduce deformations mainly in the upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as to improve local stability. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PSN (Pretension Soil Nailing), is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements in top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global stability. Up to now, the analytical procedure and design technique are proposed to evaluate maximum pretension force and stability of the PSN system. Also, proposed are techniques to determine the required thickness of a shotcrete facing and to estimate probability of a failure against the punching shear, Based on the proposed procedure and technique, effects of the radius of a influence circle and dilatancy angle on the thickness of a shotcrete facing, bonded length and safety factors are analyzed. In addition, effects of the reduction of deformations expected by pretension of the soil nails are examined in detail throughout an illustrative example and the $FLAC^{2D}$ program analysis. And a numerical approach is proposed PSN system using the shear strength reduction technique with the $FLAC^{2D}$ program.
Ground reaction curve is a very important information for evaluating the side wall displacements and installation time of the tunnle support. The ground reaction curve can be estimated by analytical closed form solutions derived on the supposition of circular section and isotropic stress condition. The conditions of stress field and tunnel configurations, however, are quite different in practice. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the effects of stress anisotropy and tunnel configurations in order to use simply in practical design. This paper describes a study of influence factors in the ground reaction curve. In order to evaluate the applicability of analytical closed form solution in practical design, two sets of parametric studies were carried out by numerical analysis in elastic tunnel behaviour: one set of studies investigated the influence of the K and the other set investigated the influence of the tunnel configurations such as circular and horse-shoe shape. In the studies, K value varies between 0.5 and 3.0, initial ground vertical stress varies between 5~30MPa far each K values. The results indicated that the self-supportability of ground is larger in the ground having lower K value. However, it is suggested that the applicability of closed form solution may not be adequate to determine directly the installation time of the support and self-supportability of ground. It is necessary to consider stress anisotropy and tunnel configurations.
Application of the soil nailing method is continuously extending in maintaining stable excavations and slopes. However, ground anchor support system occasionally may not be used because of space limitations in urban excavation sites nearby the existing structures. In this case, soil nailing system with relatively short length of nails could be efficiently adopted as an alternative method. The general soil nailing support system, however, may result in excessive deformations particularly in an excavation zone of the existing weak subsoils. Pretensioning the soil nails then could play important roles to reduce deformations mainly in an upper part of the nailed-soil excavation system as well as to improve local stability. In this study, a newly modified soil nailing technology named as the PSN (Pretension Soil Nailing) is developed to reduce both facing displacements and ground surface settlements in top-down excavation process as well as to increase the global stability. Up to now, the PSN system has been investigated mainly focusing on an establishment of the design procedure. In the present study, laboratory model tests are carried out to investigate the failure mechanism and behavior characteristics of the PSN system. Various results of model tests are also analyzed to provide a fundamental basis for the efficient design.
The benefits of utilizing internal reinforced members, such as soil nails and ground anchors, in maintaining stable excavations and slopes have been known among geotechnical engineers to be very effective. Occasionally, however, both soil nails and ground anchors are simultaneously used in one excavation site. In the present study, a method of limit equilibrium stability analysis of the excavation zone reinforced with the vertically or horizontally mixed nail-anchor system is proposed to evaluate the global safety factor with respect to a sliding failure. The postulated failure wedges are determined based on the results of the $FLAC^{2D}\; 및\; FLAC^{3D}$ program analyses. This study also deals with a determination of the required thickness of the shotcrete facing. An excessive facing thickness may be required due to both the stress concentration and the relative displacement at the interface zone between the soil nailing system and the ground anchor system. A simple finite element method of analysis is presented to estimate the corresponding relative displacement at the interface zone between two different support systems. As an efficient resolution to reduce the facing thickness, the modified bearing plate system is also proposed. Finally with various analysis related to the effects of design parameters, the predicted displacements are compared with the results of the $FLAC^{2D}$ program analyses.

If a problem occurs in the strut during the construction of the braced wall, they may cause excessive deformation of the braced wall. Therefore, in this study, the behavior of the braced wall and existing tunnel adjacent to excavation were investigated assuming that the support function of strut is lost during construction process. For this purpose, a series of model test was performed. As a result of the study, the earth pressure in the ground behind wall was rearranged due to the deformation of the braced wall, and the ground displacements caused the deformation of adjacent tunnels. When the struts located on the nearest side wall from the tunnel were removed, the deformation of the braced wall and the tunnel deformation were the largest. The magnitude of transferred earth pressure depended on the location of tunnel. The increase of the cover depth of tunnel from 0.65D to 2.65D caused the increase of the earth pressure by 25.6%. As the distance between braced wall and tunnel was increased from 0.5D to 1.0D, the transferred earth pressure increased by 16% on average. Horizontal displacements of braced wall by the removal of the strut tended to concentrate around the removed struts, and the horizontal displacement increased as the strut removal position is lowered. The tunnel displacement was maximum, when the cover depth of tunnel was 1.15D and the horizontal distance between braced wall and the side of tunnel was 0.5D. The minimal displacement occurred, when the cover depth of tunnel was 2.65D and the horizontal distance between braced wall and the side of tunnel was 1.0D. The difference between the maximum displacement and the minimum displacement was about 2 times, and the displacement was considered to be the largest when it was in the range of 1.15D to 1.65D and the horizontal distance of 0.5D.
