A Case Study on the Characteristics of Supply Chain Environmental Management in Korean Firms (우리나라 기업의 친환경공급사슬관리에 관한 연구)

  • SCEM is the concept of reducing environmental effect on the outside of purchasing and manufacturing process, delivery, and distribution process. An ultimate aim of SCEM are obtaining environmental stability and energy/materials operational efficiency. Although the importance of greening supply chain was highlighted, former researches were often based on case studies of specific industry and didn't provide clear definition of environmental supply chain management which includes fundamental notions for business practitioners. This study focuses on findings how the SCEM system practically run and what the characteristics of SCEM is in Korean firms through case studies. It is suggested that SCEM is more effective for environmental management rather than by making limited eco-innovation. Korean firms have considered that an international environmental regulation is more important than customers' needs for environmental goods for implementing SCEM.

  • The curtain wall engineering of local high-rise buildings consists of many phases such as design, curtain wail design, manufacture, procurement, construction and facility management, each of which also involves many' actors such as architect, curtain wall consultants, manufacturers, contractors, and facility managers. Moreover, the method for controlling the C/W process of each participant is needed. Eliminating wastes and problems existed in the C/W process can be more effective. What is more, it is necessary to improve the efficiency of the current process and to strengthen the competence through application of SCM to the C/W life-cycle. In addition, it is important that a ]ot of information transfer smoothly and share through information system. Therefore, this study aimed to propose the scope of application and the improvement directions in applying Supply Chain Management concept.

  • External environment of enterprises are rapidly changing brought about mainly by global competition, cost and profitability pressures, and emerging new technology. In particular, frequent change of customer requirements is a tough challenge to manufacturing company. To cope with these challenges, a production planning and scheduling (PP&S) function might be established to provide accountability for both customer service and operational efficiency. PP&S deals with short-term decision making in the production process of whole supply chain. The task of PP&S is to seek a balance between customer orders and limited resources. At present, many PP&S software solutions have been utilized in many enterprises to generate a realistic production plan and schedule efficiently. The aim of this paper is to analyze the PP&S functionalities and its system architecture from the perspective of SCM (Supply Chain Management), and propose the PP&S solution classification framework to facilitate the comparison among various solutions.

VMI with Upper Limit of Inventory for Vendor and Retailer (판매자와 구매자의 재고상한이 존재하는 VMI)

  • Vendor Managed Inventory is a well-known vendor-retailer coordination approach in supply chain management where the vendor manages inventory of the retailer and determines the order interval and order quantity for the retailer. To consider practical situation, the upper limit of inventory for the retailer is set. If the inventory level for the retailer exceeds the upper limit, then the penalty cost is charged to the retailer. Furthermore, maximum allowable inventory level is set for the vendor to prevent the vendor from keeping much inventory. Single-vendor multi-retailer supply chain model with upper limit of inventory for vendor and retailers is studied. All the retailers' are assumed to have the common cycle time, and a vendor manages retailers' inventory and replenishes products. The mathematical formulation is introduced to minimize the total cost including the penalty cost violating the upper limit of inventory for retailers with the constraint of maximum allowable inventory level. The solution procedure based on Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions is derived. KKT conditions are often applied to find an optimal solution of nonlinear programming problem with constraints. An illustrative example is used to show the application of the proposed solution procedure. Furthermore, sensitivity analysis is done to find out the relationship between maximum allowable inventory level and other values such as order quantity, the number of shipment, vendor's cost, retailer's cost, and total cost. As maximum allowable inventory level decreases, the number of shipment decreases but total cost increases. Order quantity has the trend of decline and is affected by the number of shipment.

An Examination of Multi-Dimensional Constructs of Resistance to Supply Chain Management (SCM) Change for a Small and Medium Sized Food Production Company (공급사슬관리 (SCM) 운영 변화의 저항에 영향을 미치는 선행요인 평가 : 식품제조 중소기업 K사 사례를 중심으로)

  • The present study identified several antecedents that create perceived resistance to supply chain management (SCM) change. This work particularly emphasizes SCM change, which is notable given its central role in reacting market orientation and varied environmental and managerial conditions. A careful case study on a small and medium sized food production company in South Korea leads to the formulation of our framework including one second-order construct of 'resistance' as well as eight first-order constructs of 'implementing the payment terms', 'balancing of business process', 'fear of responsibility', 'business sustainability transparency', 'past experience of failure', 'competence of work personnel', 'cooperation with third parties' and 'sharing personnel information with partner'. The hypothesized relation of first- and second-order construct was validated using survey sample data collected from 350 respondents who completed their questionnaire instrument. Results from confirmatory factor analysis revealed that nomological validity was established at statistical significance level by identifying six first order constructs of 'implementing the payment terms', 'fear of responsibility', 'business sustainability transparency', 'past experience of failure', a conbined construct of 'competence of work personnel/cooperation with third parties' and 'sharing personnel information with partner'. The findings from our work are expected to provide important insights to the strategy for SCM risk management for small and medium sized company.

  • The whole of industry sectors are getting achieved BPR(Business process Reencountering) which innovate the inefficient product organization through examined the value chain. Besides, they try to integrate ERP, CRM, and SCM which is based on value chain. Construction Industry, however, not only is not regularized it but is not inadequacy about information mind. Nowadays Korean government lead the construction CALS, only some large company Innovate and restructure the organization and product structure. It Is necessary to efficient manage the project information and historical data and develop CIC/PMIS to transfer from the function based information-flow to the project based information-flow.   • Moreover a new logistics concept is needed through the sharing information between suppliers and consumers, which maximizes the level of customers service and its flexibility by changing functional-oriented to process-oriented. In other words, Supply Chain Management(SCM) is now considered as a key aspect of business, which controls the flows of information, funds, and goods in the supply chain. Rationalization of transport-delivery system will be one of the most important issues on logistics management to the domestic companies. The companies need the effective delivery system. Especially in the case of delivery system from distribution centers to customers or vendors, it might take a long time to control the delivery system manually because it would be hard to apply the automatic vehicle routing algorithm effectively considering all the practical constraints. Thus this study develops a heuristic algorithm of automatic vehicle delivery support system in terms of grouping by short ranges of vehicle movement utilizing postal coordinates, which satisfies a variety of realistic constraints and reduces controlling time of manual operations.

Development of Agent-based Platform for Coordinated Scheduling in Global Supply Chain (글로벌 공급사슬에서 경쟁협력 스케줄링을 위한 에이전트 기반 플랫폼 구축)

  • In global supply chain, the scheduling problems of large products such as ships, airplanes, space shuttles, assembled constructions, and/or automobiles are complicated by nature. New scheduling systems are often developed in order to reduce inherent computational complexity. As a result, a problem can be decomposed into small sub-problems, problems that contain independently small scheduling systems integrating into the initial problem. As one of the authors experienced, DAS (Daewoo Shipbuilding Scheduling System) has adopted a two-layered hierarchical architecture. In the hierarchical architecture, individual scheduling systems composed of a high-level dock scheduler, DAS-ERECT and low-level assembly plant schedulers, DAS-PBS, DAS-3DS, DAS-NPS, and DAS-A7 try to search the best schedules under their own constraints. Moreover, the steep growth of communication technology and logistics enables it to introduce distributed multi-nation production plants by which different parts are produced by designated plants. Therefore vertical and lateral coordination among decomposed scheduling systems is necessary. No standard coordination mechanism of multiple scheduling systems exists, even though there are various scheduling systems existing in the area of scheduling research. Previous research regarding the coordination mechanism has mainly focused on external conversation without capacity model. Prior research has heavily focuses on agent-based coordination in the area of agent research. Yet, no scheduling domain has been developed. Previous research regarding the agent-based scheduling has paid its ample attention to internal coordination of scheduling process, a process that has not been efficient. In this study, we suggest a general framework for agent-based coordination of multiple scheduling systems in global supply chain. The purpose of this study was to design a standard coordination mechanism. To do so, we first define an individual scheduling agent responsible for their own plants and a meta-level coordination agent involved with each individual scheduling agent. We then suggest variables and values describing the individual scheduling agent and meta-level coordination agent. These variables and values are represented by Backus-Naur Form. Second, we suggest scheduling agent communication protocols for each scheduling agent topology classified into the system architectures, existence or nonexistence of coordinator, and directions of coordination. If there was a coordinating agent, an individual scheduling agent could communicate with another individual agent indirectly through the coordinator. On the other hand, if there was not any coordinating agent existing, an individual scheduling agent should communicate with another individual agent directly. To apply agent communication language specifically to the scheduling coordination domain, we had to additionally define an inner language, a language that suitably expresses scheduling coordination. A scheduling agent communication language is devised for the communication among agents independent of domain. We adopt three message layers which are ACL layer, scheduling coordination layer, and industry-specific layer. The ACL layer is a domain independent outer language layer. The scheduling coordination layer has terms necessary for scheduling coordination. The industry-specific layer expresses the industry specification. Third, in order to improve the efficiency of communication among scheduling agents and avoid possible infinite loops, we suggest a look-ahead load balancing model which supports to monitor participating agents and to analyze the status of the agents. To build the look-ahead load balancing model, the status of participating agents should be monitored. Most of all, the amount of sharing information should be considered. If complete information is collected, updating and maintenance cost of sharing information will be increasing although the frequency of communication will be decreasing. Therefore the level of detail and updating period of sharing information should be decided contingently. By means of this standard coordination mechanism, we can easily model coordination processes of multiple scheduling systems into supply chain. Finally, we apply this mechanism to shipbuilding domain and develop a prototype system which consists of a dock-scheduling agent, four assembly- plant-scheduling agents, and a meta-level coordination agent. A series of experiments using the real world data are used to empirically examine this mechanism. The results of this study show that the effect of agent-based platform on coordinated scheduling is evident in terms of the number of tardy jobs, tardiness, and makespan.

Analysis of the Value of Yield Information under Periodic Review Inventory System (정기발주 재고모형에서 공급자 수율 정보 공유의 기대효과 분석)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of sharing uncertain yield information with a downstream supply chain player. We are interested in understanding how the amount of yield uncertainty affects the supply-side benefits and/or costs, which has not been considered in the literature, in addition to the customer-side benefits. With that purpose, this work evaluates a supplier who provides yield information in comparison with another supplier who shares no information. We simulate an order-up-to type heuristic policy that is adapted from the literature and reasonably modified to represent yield information sharing with error. From the simulation study, we argue that the customer would experience cost reduction, but the cost for supplier's inventory is increasing when sharing yield information. Furthermore, the amount of benefits and costs are situational and affected by level of yield uncertainty and demand variance. Based on the simulation study, we finally make several recommendations for the supply-side approaches to yield information sharing.
