The use of supplemental damping to dissipate seismic energy is one of the most economical and effective ways to mitigate the effects of earthquakes on structures. Both displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices dissipate earthquake-induced energy effectively. Combining displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices for seismic mitigation of structures minimizes the shortcomings of individual dampers, and is the most economical solution for seismic mitigation. However, there are few publications related to the optimum distributions of combined devices in a multiple-bay frame building. In this paper, the effectiveness of a building consisting of multiple bags equipped with combined displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices is investigated. A four-story building with six bays was selected as an example to examine the efficiency of the proposed combination methods. The parametric study shows that appropriate arrangements of different kinds of devices make the devices more efficient and economical.
A simple design process is proposed for supplemental viscous dampers based on structural safety redundancy. In this process, the safety redundancy of the primary structure without a damper is assessed by the capacity and response spectra. The required damping ratio that should be provided by the supplemental dampers is estimated by taking the structural safety redundancy as a design target. The arrangement of dampers is determined according to the drift distribution obtained by performing pushover analysis. A benchmark model is used to illustrate and verify the validity of this design process. The results show that the structural safety redundancy of the structure provided by the viscous dampers increases to approximately twice that of the structure without a damper and is close to the design target. Compared with the existing design methods, the proposed process can estimate the elastic-plastic response of a structure more easily by using static calculation, and determine the required damping ratio more directly without iterative calculation or graphical process. It can be concluded that the proposed process is simple and effective.

The purpose of this study is to propose a new method for evaluating equivalent damping ratios of a structure with supplemental damping devices to assess their control effect quantitatively. A MDOF system is transformed to an equivalent SDOF system based on the assumption that the first mode dominates structural response. Approximate closed-form formulas for the evaluation of the first damping ratio are presented for various damping devices. Through numerical analysis of a ten-story building equipped with damping devices, the effectiveness of equivalent SDOF model and closed form formulas are verified.
This paper is concerned with the optimal seismic design of added viscous dampers in yielding plane frames. The total added damping is minimized for allowable values of local performance indices under the excitation of an ensemble of ground motions in both regular and irregular structures. The local performance indices are taken as the maximal inter-story drift of each story and/or the normalized hysteretic energy dissipated at each of the plastic hinges. Gradients of the constraints with respect to the design variables (damping coefficients) are derived, via optimal control theory, to enable an efficient first order optimization scheme to be used for the solution of the problem. An example of a ten story three bay frame is presented. This example reveals the following 'fully stressed characteristics' of the optimal solution: damping is assigned only to stories for which the local performance index has reached the allowable value. This may enable the application of efficient and practical analysis/redesign type methods for the optimal design of viscous dampers in yielding plane frames.

Coupling adjacent building with supplemental damping devices is a developing method of reduced structural response due to wind and seismic excitations. The philosophy is to allow structures, vibrating at different frequencies, to exert control forces upon one another to reduce the overall responses of the system. This paper studies the effect of installing vibration control devices of two high rise building structures(49 stories and 42 stories) connected by sky-bridge. According to the analysis results the use of sky-bridge can be effective in increasing damping ratio of the system.

To enhance seismic performance of a structure ATC-40 and FEMA-273 propose technical strategies such as increasing strength, altering stiffness, and reducing demand by employing base isolation and energy dissipation devices. Specifically the energy dissipation devices directly increase the ability of the structure to dampen earthquake response. However nonlinear dynamic time history analysis of a structure with energy dissipation devices is complicated and time consuming. In this study a simple and straightforward procedure is developed using effective damping ratio to obtain the required amount of viscoelastic dampers in order to meet given performance objectives. Parametric study has been performed for the period of the structure, yield strength, and the stiffness after the first yield. According to the analysis results, earthquake demand and required damping ratio were reduced by installing viscoelastic dampers. The results also show that with the addition of the supplemental damping evaluted by the proposed method the performance of the model structures are well restrained within the target point.

The purpose of this study is to propose the general method for evaluating the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with supplemental response control dampers. We define Lyapunov function of which derivative can be expressed in autoregressive form and evaluate the equivalent damping ratios by using Lyapunov function and its derivative. This Lyapunov function may be called as generalized structural energy. In this study, it is assumed that the response of a structure is stationary random process and control dampers do not affect the modal shapes of a structure, and the structure has proportional damping. Proposed method can be used to get the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with non-linear control dampers such as friction dampers as well as linear control dampers. To show the effectiveness of the proposed method. we evaluate the equivalent damping ratios of a structure with viscous dampers. AMDs. and friction dampers. The equivalent damping ratios from proposed method are compared to those from eigenvalue analysis for linear control dampers. and those from time history analysis for non-linear control dampers. respectively.

Base isolation is an effective method for protecting structures against earthquake hazard. It elongates the period of vibration and introduces supplemental damping to the structural system. The stiffness, damping and displacement are coupled forcing the code seismic design procedure to be unnecessarily complicated. In addition, the force reduction factor -a key parameter in the design procedurehas not been well addressed by seismic design codes at the high levels of damping due to the pronounced difference between pseudo and actual accelerations. In this study, a comparison has been conducted to evaluate eight different methods, in the literature, for calculating the force reduction factor due to damping. Accordingly, a simplified seismic analysis procedure has been proposed based on the well documented N2 method. Comprehensive analysis has been performed for base-isolated structure models for direct application and verification of the proposed procedure. The results have been compared with those of the European code EC8, the nonlinear time history analysis and investigations in the literature, where good agreement has been reported. In addition, a discussion has been elaborated for the resulted response of the base-isolated structure models with respect to the dynamic characteristics of the base isolation system.
Response spectrum method is still an effective approach for the design of buildings with supplemental dampers. In practice, complex complete quadratic combination (CCQC) rule is always used in the response spectrum method to consider the effect of non-classical damping. The conventional CCQC rule is based on exact complex mode vectors. Sometimes the calculated complex mode vectors may be not excited by the external loading and errors in the structural responses always arise due to the mode truncation. Load-dependent Ritz (LDR) vectors are associated with the external loading and LDR vectors not excited can be automatically excluded. Also, contributions of higher modes are implicitly contained in the LDR vectors in terms of static responses. To improve the calculation efficiency and accuracy, LDR vectors are introduced in the CCQC rule in the present study. Firstly, the generation procedure of LDR vectors suitable for non-classical damping system is presented. Compared to the conventional LDR vectors, the LDR vectors herein are complex-valued and named as complex LDR (CLDR) vectors. Based on the CLDR vectors, the CCQC rule is then rederived and an improved response spectrum method is developed. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method in this paper is verified through three typical non-classical damping buildings. Numerical results show that the CLDR vector is superior to the complex mode with the same number in the calculation. Since the generation of CLDR vectors requires less computational cost and storage space, the method proposed in this paper offers an attractive alternative, especially for structures with a large number of degrees of freedom.
Passive negative stiffness dampers (NSDs) that possess superior energy dissipation abilities, have been proved to be more efficient than commonly adopted passive viscous dampers in controlling stay cable vibrations. Recently, inertial mass dampers (IMDs) have attracted extensive attentions since their properties are similar to NSDs. It has been theoretically predicted that superior supplemental damping can be generated for a taut cable with an IMD. This paper aims to theoretically investigate the impact of the cable sag on the efficiency of an IMD in controlling stay cable vibrations, and experimentally validate superior vibration mitigation performance of the IMD. Both the numerical and asymptotic solutions were obtained for an inclined sag cable with an IMD installed close to the cable end. Based on the asymptotic solution, the cable attainable maximum modal damping ratio and the corresponding optimal damping coefficient of the IMD were derived for a given inertial mass. An electromagnetic IMD (EIMD) with adjustable inertial mass was developed to investigate the effects of inertial mass and cable sag on the vibration mitigation performance of two model cables with different sags through series of first modal free vibration tests. The results show that the sag generally reduces the attainable first modal damping ratio of the cable with a passive viscous damper, while tends to increase the cable maximum attainable modal damping ratio provided by the IMD. The cable sag also decreases the optimum damping coefficient of the IMD when the inertial mass is less than its optimal value. The theoretically predicted first modal damping ratio of the cable with an IMD, taking into account the sag generally, agrees well with that identified from experimental results, while it will be significantly overestimated with a taut-cable model, especially for the cable with large sag.
