  • An assessment of two-equation turbulence models, the low Reynolds k-${\varepsilon}$ and k-${\omega}$ SST models, with the compressibility corrections proposed by Sarkar and Wilcox, has been performed. The compressibility models are evaluated by investigating transonic or supersonic flows, including the arc-bump, transonic diffuser, supersonic jet impingement, and unsteady supersonic diffuser. A unified implicit finite volume scheme, consisting of mass, momentum, and energy conservation equations, is used, and the results are compared with experimental data. The model accuracy is found to depend strongly on the flow separation behavior. An MPI (Message Passing Interface) parallel computing scheme is implemented.

  • When high-pressure gas is exhausted through nozzle exit to the atmosphere, expanded supersonic jet is formed with the Mach disk at a specific condition. In two-dimensional supersonic jets, the hysteresis phenomenon of the reflected shock waves is found to occur under quasi-steady flow conditions. Transitional pressure ratio between the regular reflection and Mach reflection in the jet is affected by this phenomenon. In the present study, experiments are carried out on internal flow in a supersonic nozzle to clarify the hysteresis phenomena for the shock waves and to discuss its interdependence on the rate of the change of pressure ratio with time. Flow visualization is carried out separately on the straight and divergent channels downstream of the nozzle throat section. The influence that the hysteresis phenomena have on the location of shock wave in a supersonic nozzle is also investigated experimentally.

  • This paper reports the effects of nozzle exit boundary layer swirl on the instability modes of underexpanded supersonic jets emerging from plane rectangular nozzles. The effects of boundary layer swirl at the nozzle exit on thrust and mixing of supersonic rectangular jets are also considered. The previous study was performed with a 30°boundary layer swirl (S=0.41) in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. At this study, a 45°boundary layer swirl (S=1.0) is applied in a plane rectangular nozzle exit. A three-dimensional unsteady compressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes code with Baldwin-Lomax and Chiens $\kappa$-$\xi$ two-equation turbulence models was used for numerical simulation. A shock adaptive grid system was applied to enhance shock resolution. The nozzle aspect ratio used in this study was 5.0, and the fully-expanded jet Mach number was 1.526. The \"flapping\" and \"pumping\" oscillations were observed in the jets small dimension at frequencies of about 3,900Hz and 7,800Hz, respectively. In the jets large dimension, \"spanwise\" oscillations at the same frequency as the small dimensions \"flapping\" oscillations were captured. As reported before with a 30°nozzle exit boundary layer swirl, the induction of 45°swirl to the nozzle exit boundary layer also strongly enhances jet mixing with the reduction of thrust by 10%.

  • When a secondary gaseous flow is injected vertically into a supersonic flow through circular nozzle, a complicated structure of flow field is produced around the injection area. The interaction between the two streams produces a strong bow shock wane on the upstream side of the side-jet. The results show that bow shock wave and turbulent boundary layer interaction induces the boundary layer separation in front of the side-jet. This study is to analyze the structure of flow fields and distribution of surface pressure on the flat plate according to total pressure ratio using a supersonic cold-flow system and also to study the control force of affected side-jet. The nozzle of main flow was designed to have Mach 2.88 at the exit. The injector has a sonic nozzle with 4mm diameter at the exit of the side-jet. In experiments, The oil flow visualization using a silicone oil and ink was conducted in order to analyze the structure of flow fields around the side-jet. The flow fields are visualized using the schlieren method. In this study, a computational fluid dynamic solution is also compared with experimental results.

  • The present study addresses experimental results to investigate the details of the near field flow structures produced in the under-expanded, dual, coaxial, swirling, jet. The sonic/supersonic swirling jets are emitted from the sonic inner nozzle and the outer annular nozzle produce the co-swirling and counter swirling against the primary swirling jet, respectively. The interactions between both the secondary annular swirling and primary inner supersonic swirling jets are quantified by the pitot impact and static pressure measurements and visualized by using the Schliern optical method. The experiment is performed for different swirl intensity and pressure ratio. The results obtained show that the secondary co-swirling jet significantly changes the inner under-expanded swirling jet, such as the recirculation zone, pressure distribution, through strong interactions between both the swirling jets and the effects of the secondary counter-swirling jet is similar to the secondary co-swirl jet case.

  • The Boltzmann kinetic equation is solved directly by means of the conservative splitting method. Underexpanded supersonic free jet flows with small Knudsen numbers are studied. In this numerical simulation features intrinsic to appropriate experiments are observed. Streamwise vortices in a mixing layer and chaotic downstream temporal-spatial fluctuations of microscopic quantities with large amplitude are obtained.

  • An axisymmetric supersonic jet is simulated at a Mach number of 1.5 and a Reynolds number of $10^5$ to identify the mechanism of sound radiation from the jet. The present simulation is performed based on the high-order accuracy and high-resolution ENO(Essentially Non-Oscillatory) schemes to capture the time-dependent flow structure representing the sound source. In this simulation, optimum expansion jet is selected as a target, where the pressure at nozzle exit is equal to that of the ambient pressure, to see pure shear layer growth without effect of change in jet cross section due to expansion or shock wave generated at nozzle exit. Shock waves are generated near vortex rings, and discernible pressure waves called Mach wave are radiated in the downstream direction with an angle from the jet axis, which is characteristic of high speed jet noise. Furthermore, vortex roll-up phenomena are observed through the visualization of vorticity contours.

  • Viscous solutions of supersonic jet impinging on a flat plate normal to the flow are simulated using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes solver. The jet impinging flow structure exhibits such complex nature as shock shell, plate shock and Mach disk depending on the flow parameters. Among others, the dominant parameters are the ratio of the nozzle exit pressure to the ambient pressure and the distance between the nozzle exit plane and the impinging plane. In the present study, the nozzle contour and the pressure ratio are held fixed, while the jet impinging distance is varied to illuminate the characteristics of the jet plume with the distance. As the plate is placed close to the nozzle at 3D high, the computed wall pressure at or near the jet center oscillates with large amplitude with respect to the mean value. Here D is the nozzle exit diameter. The amplitude of wall pressure fluctuations subsides as the distance increases, but the maximum pressure level at the plate is achieved when the distance is about 4D high. The frequency of the wall pressure is estimated at 6.0 kHz, 9.3 kHz, and 10.0 kHz as the impinging distance varies from 3D, 4D, to 6D, respectively.
