PME88 (gliadin-combined) melon superoxide dismutase (SOD) is known to promote the production of the body‘s own natural antioxidants including superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effects of PME88 melonSOD on the ultraviolet-induced photo-aging by the evolution of minimal erythemal dose (MED), erythema quotation and spectrocolorimetric measurements of erythema. The analysis of the evolution of the MED showed a significant increase 28 days after the daily taken of the PME88 melonSOD. The analysis of the erythema quotation showed that on D29, for the dose 1.25 MED, erythema intensity is significantly higher for placebo group than for PME88 melonSOD group. At doses 0.64 MED$_{D14}$, 0.80 MED$_{D14}$ and 1 MED$_{D14}$ the value of parameter $a^*$ (the most sensitive to the colour changes bound to the variations of blood flow. It permits to assess the evolution of erythema) is significantly higher for placebo group. No significant difference has been observed between groups (PME88 melonSOD and placebo) on the evolution of the number and consistency of feces after 4 weeks of treatment. No intolerance has been observed during the 4 weeks of treatment. These results mean that PME88 melonSOD as a dietary supplement could be useful to attenuate ultraviolet-induced skin photo-aging.
This study was started to find out if plasma malondialdehyde(MDA), $\alpha-tocopherol$ and erythrocyte superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity could be markers of biological activity resulting from exposed to lead in workers. Blood samples were randomly obtained from lead-exposed workers(n=29), $CO_2$, welders(n=60) and office workers(n=60). We used whole blood to analyse blood lead with atomic absorption spectrophotometer. Superoxide dismutase activity in erythrocyte was measured with spetrophotometer. MDA and $\alpha-tocopherol$ in plasma were measured with high performance liquid chromatography. Lead-exposed workers was significantly high in blood lead concentration$(29.37{\mu}g/d\ell)$ compared with welders$(6.42{\mu}g/d\ell)$ and office workers$(5.01{\mu}g/d\ell)$. The level of plasma MDA was significantly higher in the lead-exposed workers($1.87{\mu}mol/g$ cholesterol) than the welders($1.41{\mu}mol/g$ cholesterol) and office workers($1.41{\mu}mol/g$ cholesterol). Erythrocyte SOD activity in lead-exposed workers(56.80 U/g Hb) was significantly increased than those of welders(37.63 U/g Hb) and office workers(20.47 U/g Hb). The plasma $\alpha-tocopherol$ level of lead-exposed workers($4.93{\mu}g/g$ cholesterol) was statistically different from welders($4.25{\mu}g/g$ cholesterol) and office workers$4.28{\mu}g/g$ cholesterol). Neither age nor smoking was related to SOD or MDA level. Blood lead was significantly correlated with erythrocyte SOD activity(r=0.405), plasma MDA(r=0.296) and $\alpha-tocopherol$ (r=0.207). Plasma MDA was also significantly correlated with SOD (r=0.217). In multiple regression analysis, the change of MDA and SOD activity level related to the blood lead concentration. These results suggested that the increase of plasma MDA and erythrocyte SOD activity in lead-exposed workers had a close relationship with the oxidative stress induced by lead.
Objectives The present subacute study was designed to evaluate the effect of coenzyme Q 10 (CoQ10) in the 28 days aroclor 1254 exposure induced oxidative stress in mice brain. Methods Biochemical estimations of brain lipid peroxidation (LPO), reduced glutathione (GSH), and activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE), and histopathological investigations of brain tissue were carried out. Results Oral exposure of aroclor 1254 (5 mg/kg) led to significant decrease in levels of GSH, and activities of SOD, CAT, GPx, and AChE, and increase in LPO. These aberrations were restored by CoQ10 (10 mg/kg, intraperitoneal injection [IP]). This protection offered was comparable to that of L-deprenyl (1 mg/kg, IP) which served as a reference standard. Conclusions Aroclor 1254 exposure hampers the activities of various antioxidant enzymes and induces oxidative stress in the brains of Swiss albino mice. Supplementation of CoQ10 abrogates these deleterious effects of aroclor 1254. CoQ10 also apparently enhanced acetyl cholinesterase activity which reflects its influence on the cholinergic system.
This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidative and chemopreventive effects of the extracts from Polyozellus multiplex, an edible mushroom through in vitro and in vivo assay. Polyozellus multiplex fractions were assayed for its antioxidative effect with colony formation assay. Polyozellus multiplex methanol extract and water fraction showed protective effects against the cytotoxicity of $H_2O_2$. The modifying effects of Polyozellus multiplex methanol extract and water fraction on the induction of carcinogenesis by N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG) were investigated in Wistar rats. The GSH content was decreased by MNNG treatment but was increased by adding Polyozellus multiplex water fractions. Also the activity of glutathione S-transferase and the superoxide dismutase levels were increased by the treatment of Polyozellus multiplex water fractions more than with MNNG alone. In addition to the Polyozellus multiplex water fraction increased the p53 expression as compared with the value of MNNG alone.
Modem people have begun to have the nationwide interest in the rice wine called Makgeolri which is one of the traditional Korean alcoholic liquors. This study was performed to investigate the effects of San sung Makgeolri extract (SM) on antioxidation together with the determination of pH and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the progress of fermentation in the lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-treated rats. We examined the levels of SOD (superoxide dismutase), CAT (catalase), GPx (glutathione peroxidase) in liver homogenates and the histopathological observations in liver tissue. LPS-treated group markedly decreased the levels of SOD, CAT and GPx. But SM + LPS-treated group significantly increased the levels of them. Furthermore, the antioxidative effects of SM were supported by the histopathological observations in liver tissue which showed severe inflammation and necrosis in LPS-treated group, compared to the attenuated inflammation and necrosis in SM + LPS-treated group. This results suggested that SM could be a candidate of antioxidative material in spite of alcoholic liquors.

Objectives : This study estimated antioxidant effects of the moxi with ginger tar (MGT) ; chemical combustion products produced by moxibustion with ginger during combustion. Methods : To do this aim, we investigated total polyphenol and flavonoid contents, SOD (superoxide dismutase) scavenging activity, ABTS (2.2-azino-bis-3-erthylbenzo-thiazoline-6- sulfonic acid) & DPPH(2,2-Dipheny1-1 -picryl-hydrazyl) radical's scavenging ability of MGT. Results : Total polyphenol contents of MGT was $7.8{\pm}0.09$ mg/g in 10 mg/ml, SOD activity was $42.51{\pm}3.39%$ in 200 ug/ml, DPPH radical scavenging effect of MGT was $83.24{\pm}0.01%$ in 200 ug/ml and ABTS radical scavenging effect was $41.88{\pm}0.16%$ in 200 ug/ml. Conclusions : In this study, the effects of moxi with ginger could be induced by not only heating stimulus on acupoints but also chemical stimulus produced during combustion of moxibustion, MGF. The advanced study about biological mechanism through meridian system, skin aging, and inflammation on MGT will be required.

This study was investigated to analyze the contents of flavonoid and polyphenol compounds, and inhibitory activities of tyrosinase and antioxidation to measure physiological effect of reflux water extraction (WE), reflux ethanol extraction (EE) and hot water extract under high pressure (HWE) of Torreya nucifera seed. HWE yields the highest contents of flavonoid compounds (176.34 mg/g) and polyphenol compounds (112.95 mg/g). The tyrosinase inhibitory rates were $5.62{\sim}28.71%$ at 2.0 mg/mL and HWE showed the highest inhibition rate. The nitrite scavenging abilities of all extracts were over 90% at pH 1.2 and 3.0 at the concentration of 2.0 mg/mL. The superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activities of HWE was the highest value of 33.58%. The electron donating abilities (EDA) were $66.46{\sim}89.72%$ and HWE was the highest when the extracts were tested at 0.1 mg/mL. The EDA of all extracts were decreased with an increment of the extracts concentrations. The xanthine oxidase inhibitory rate of HWE was the highest value of 89.29% at the concentration of 2.0 mg/mL and the WE and HWE were over 75% rate of xanthine oxidase inhibition at 0.5 mg/mL.

This study investigated the physiochemical properties, antioxidative, nitrite-scavenging, and alcohol metabolism enzyme activities of nectarine vinegar prepared by a traditional fermentation method. The pH of nectarine vinegar was 3.70, the sugar content was $8.87^{\circ}Brix$, and the total acidity was 6.29%. Among organic acids detected, acetic acid was highest at 32.42 mg/ml, followed by lactic acid, malic acid, and succinic acid. Total phenol content of the nectarine vinegar was $121.84{\mu}g$ tannic acid equivalents (TAE)/100 ml. The antioxidative effects of muskmelon vinegar were measured using 1,1-Diphenyl2-picrylhydrazy (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity and superoxide dismutase (SOD) assay. DPPH of nectarine vinegar was increased in a dose-dependent manner, which was 84.47% at 40% concentration. SOD activity was increased in a dose-dependent manner, which was 89.06% at 60% concentration. Nitric scavenging activities of nectarine vinegar were 94.17%, 76.91%, and 20.21% at pH values 1.2, 3.0, and 6.0 at 100% concentration, respectively. The effects of nectarine vinegar on alcohol-metabolism were determined by measuring the generation of reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) by alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH). ADH and ALDH activities of nectarine vinegar were increased in a dose-dependent manner, which were 153.61% and 178.20 % at 60% concentration, respectively. These results suggest that nectarine vinegar has great potential as a resource for high quality functional health beverages.
This study was carried out to investigate the effect of natural Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. vinegar on the liver protective effect of animals exposed to carbon tetrachloride. Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. vinegar (200 mg/kg) was administered at the same time for 28 days, and hepatotoxicity was induced by intraperitoneal injection of carbon tetrachloride on the $29^{th}$ day. The aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase levels were significantly decreased (p < 0.001) and the superoxide dismutase and catalase activities were significantly increased (p < 0.001) in the Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. vinegar group compared to the control group. Histopathological observations showed that the Eriobotrya japonica Lindl. vinegar showed hepatic cell structure similar to normal group, and these results showed that it had an effect of suppressing and protecting the damage of liver cell. Therefore, Eriobotrya japonical Lindl. vinegar is considered to be a healthy functional food of the liver.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of vitamin E on the antioxidative defense system of kidney in streptozotocin induced diabetic rats. Sprague Dawley male rats weighing 100$\pm$10g were randomly assigned to one normal and three STZ induced diabetic groups, which were subdivided into vitamin E free diet(DM 0E group), 40mg vitamin E per kg diet(DM 40E group) and 400mg vitamin E per kg diet(DM 400E group). Vitamin E level of normal group was 40 mg per kg diet. Diabetes was experimentally induced by intravenous injection of 55mg/kg of body weight of streptozotocin(STZ) in citrate buffer(pH 4.3) after 4 weeks feeding of experimental diets. Animals were sacrificed at the 6th day of diabetic states. There were no significant on body weights, food intakes, and food efficiency ratio before the diabetic occurrence. But after the injection of STZ, body weights and food efficiency ratios were significantly decreased and the food intakes was increased. Kidney weights were significantly increased in diabetic groups compared to normal group. However, there were no significant differences among the diabetic groups. Plasma insulin levels of diabetic groups were significantly decreased, whereas, blood sugar levels were increased compared to that of normal group. There were no significant differences among diabetic groups in plasma insulin and glucose levels. Activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD) in DM 0E and DM 40E groups were signi ficantly decreased by 33% and 27%, respectively, compared to normal group. But that of DM 400E group was increased by 35% compared to DM 0E group. Activity of glutathione peroxidase(GSHpx) in DM 0E group was decreased by 20% compared with normal group. GSHpx activity in DM 400E group was increased by 29% compared to normal group. The contents of vitamin E in kidney were 58% and 49% lower in DM 0E and DM 40E group, respectively, than normal group. There was no significant difference in renal vitamin E contents between DM-400E group and normal group. The contents of superoxide radical(O2 ) in kidney were 150% and 98%, respectively, higher in DM 0E and DM 40E groups than normalgroup. DM 400E and normal groups were similar levels in their superoxide radical contents of kidneys. These results indicate that vitamin E functioned as chain breaking antioxidant in kidney such as in other tissues.
