  • One of the necessary conditions for the mass production of the edible insect, the white-spotted flower chafer Protaetia brevitarsis seulensis (Kolbe), is to breed a strain with excellent egg-laying ability. To identify external morphological traits related to egg-laying ability, we investigated the effects of the weight, length, and width of female adults on egg production. Correlation and multiple regression analyses revealed a positive correlation between the weight of female adults and egg production. This study suggests that selection of heavier females is a good strategy for breeding strains with superior egg-laying characteristics. The results of this study will serve as important foundational data for future breeding of superior strains.

  • The control of resistance of foil strain gauge is accomplished by means of etching technique. Thus, there is an irregularity in metal foil. In order to solve this problem, ion sputter machining method has been used to make strain gauge in this study and the characteristics of this strain gauge are investigated. As the result of this study, it was possible to make a flexible strain gauge which can be used to measure the stress. The strain gauge made by authors shows superior characteristics in creep, O point variance, hysteresis and nonlinearity by surrounding temperature.

  • Objective : We investigated association between excessiveness and deficiency of the visceral and twelve merdians and low back pain, by checking Yangdorak. Methods : Clinical studies were done 62 patients who were treated with low back pain to Dept. of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, Hospital of Oriental Medicine in Semyung University from August 2, 2002 to August 20, 2002. We divided low back pain patients into lumbar vertebra strain, herniated nucleous pulposus(H.N.P.) degenerative spondylosis(D.J.D) and tested the potentiality of skin resistance(Yangdorak) to them. Results: 1. H.N.P. groups were more than another groups in comparing with the States over Physiological Limits and the and excessiveness of merdians. 2. In degenerative spondylosis groups, excessiveness of the F3(kidney) was to be superior. In H.N.P. groups deficiency of the H5(triple energiger) was to be superior. In lumbar vertebra strain groups, deficiency of the H5(triple energiger) and excessiveness of the F2(Liver) was to be very superior. Conclusions: We could investigate the relationship of the excessiveness and deficiency of the visceral and twelve merdians to low back spain patients by checking Yangdorak. Specially, Deficiency of the H5(triple energiger) and H4(Small intestine) may be helpful in diagnosis H.N.P..

  • Over the last few years, the endophytic bacterial community associated with citrus has been studied as an important component interacting with Xylella fastidiosa, the causal agent of citrus variegated chlorosis(CVC). This bacterium may also colonize some model plants, such as Catharanthus roseus and Nicotiana clevelandii. In the present study, we compared the endophytic colonization of Citrus sinensis and Catharanthus rose us using the endophytic bacteria Klebsiella pneumoniae. We chose an appropriate strain, K. pneumoniae 342 (Kp342), labeled with the GFP gene. This strain was inoculated onto seedlings of C. sinensis and C. roseus. The isolation frequency was determined one week after the inoculation and the endophytic colonization of K. pneumoniae was observed using fluorescence microscopy. Although the endophytic bacterium was more frequently isolated from C. roseus than from C. sinensis, the colonization profiles for both host plants were similar, suggesting that C. roseus could be used as a model plant to study the interaction between endophytic bacteria and X. fastidiosa.

  • In this study, we present a detailed investigation of luminescence properties of a blue light-emitting diode using InGaN/GaN (indium component is 17.43%) multiple quantum wells as the active region grown on patterned sapphire substrate by low-pressure metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD). High-resolution X-ray diffraction (HRXRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Raman scattering (RS) and photoluminescence (PL) measurements are employed to study the crystal quality, the threading dislocation density, surface morphology, residual strain existing in the active region and optical properties. We conclude that the crystalline quality and surface morphology can be greatly improved, the red-shift of peak wavelength is eliminated and the superior blue light LED can be obtained because the residual strain that existed in the active region can be relaxed when the LED is grown on patterned sapphire substrate (PSS). We discuss the mechanisms of growing on PSS to enhance the superior luminescence properties of blue light LED from the viewpoint of residual strain in the active region.

  • Actinoplanes teichomyceticus ATCC 31121 was mutated with UV to obtain a superior mutant strain with increasing level of teicoplanin production. In this investigation lethal curve was obtained and the optimal condition to induce mutagenesis was determined and to isolate the desirable mutant strain. It was also confirmed that teicoplanin activities by agar diffusion method to be compared to the mother strain. One mutant strain, T991014-1 that had the highest teicoplanin productivity was finally selected for further investigation including fermentation pattern. The mutant was characterized by the various tests such as amylase activity, protease activity, antibiotic resistance, autotoxicity, and productivity.

  • Candida tropicalis was treated with ultraviolet (UV) rays, and the mutants obtained were screened for xylitol production. One of the mutants, the UV1 produced 0.81g of xylitol per gram of xylose. This was further mutated with N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), and the mutants obtained were screened for xylitol production. One of the mutants (CT-OMV5) produced 0.85g/g of xylitol from xylose. Xylitol production improved to 0.87 g/g of xylose with this strain when the production medium was supplemented with urea. The CT-OMV5 mutant strain differs by 12 tests when compared to the wild-type Candida tropicalis strain. The XR activity was higher in mutant CT-OMV5. The distinct difference between the mutant and wild-type strain is the presence of numerous chlamvdospores in the mutant. In this investigation, we have demonstrated that mutagenesis was successful in generating a superior xylitol-producing strain, CT-OMV5, and uncovered distinctive biochemical and physiological characteristics of the wild-type and mutant strain, CT-OMV5.

  • To select the superior strain of Haesongi, Hypsizigus marmoreus, strains were isolated by Di-Mono mating with isolates from different fruit bodies. Three strains were selected to superior isolates that are good mycelial growth on PDA medium for 10days. When cultured on PDA medium for 10 days, strain No. 3 and strain No. 7 showed mycelial growth of 62mm and 58mm, respectively. Mycelial growth was good in the order of strain No. 2, 10, and 9. The three selected strains, KNCAF-H-3, KNCAF-H-7 and KNCAF-H-2, were cultured in sawdust medium for 10 days and showed mycelial growth of 79mm, 76mm and 73mm respectively. The mycelial growth of the selected three cultivars was better than that of Greenpeace No 5, a control cultivar grown at 55mm.

  • The press cutter is productive equipment that practically manufactures materials such as fabrics, papers, films, leathers, rubbers etc. into the desired shapes using cutting method. Plate cutting process is one of the primary energy absorbing mechanisms in a grounding or collision event. The cutting mechanism is complicated and involves plastic flow of plate in the vicinity of the tip, friction between wedge and plate, deformation of plate. In this paper, we studied the effect of friction between cutter and plastic sheet for producing precise and superior products. The press cutter is analyzed numerically using MARC finite element program according to the variation of friction coefficients. The FEM results showed that normal stress, equivalent cauchy stress, normal total strain, equivalent total strain are good when friction coefficient is 0.0 and shear stress, shear total strain are good when friction coefficient is 0.8.
